Apple announces new iPad Air: thinner, lighter & more powerful, coming Nov. 1

Apple's full-size iPad has been given a new name: The iPad Air. The new model has a 20 percent thinner design, just 7.5 millimeters thick and weighing in at just one pound, making it the lightest full-size tablet in the world.

iPad

In addition to being thinner and 28 percent lighter, the iPad Air also has a 43 percent narrower bezel around the screen's borders. The overall volume of the device has been reduced by 24 percent from the previous generation.

"iPad created an entirely new mobile computing experience, and the new iPad Air is another big leap ahead. It is so thin, light and powerful, once you hold one in your hand you will understand what a tremendous advancement this is," Apple marketing chief Philip Schiller said. "iPad Air with its 9.7-inch Retina display weighs just one pound and packs the incredible performance of iOS 7 running on a 64-bit desktop-class Apple A7 chip, and delivers all-day battery life in the lightest full-sized tablet in the world."

Inside it features the new A7 chip that just launched in the iPhone 5s, featuring 64-bit architecture. The iPad Air also sports the new M7 Motion Processor with doubled graphics and CPU performance.

iPad Air

Apple's latest tablet flagship is the first to feature MiMo wireless technology, allowing multiple Wi-Fi connections at once to boost 802.11n performance up to two times. The cellular-capable models also have expanded LTE support.

Other features of the iPad Air are a 5-megapixel iSight camera, an improved forward-facing FaceTime Camera, and dual microphones, all while still featuring the same 10-hour battery life, even as nearly a half-pound has been shaved off of the device's weight.

"When you hold it, it will be a dramatically different experience from the previous iPad," Schiller said Tuesday.

iPad

The iPad Air comes in space grey and white, as well as black, and starts at $499. Models with cellular LTE connectivity start at $629, shipping Nov. 1.

Also still a part of Apple's lineup is the iPad 2, which remains available for $399. The company also announced on Tuesday that total iPad sales have exceeded 170 million as of earlier this month.

AppleInsider's will have a full list of availability in the Price Guide as the tablets roll out.

WHY the name?! WHY? Just iPad. Available in 9.7” and 7.9” versions. And eventually 12/13”.

STILL SELLING THE IPAD 2?! WHY?!

No TouchID. Not sure if that will hinder corporate purchases.

Naming the iPad the iPad Air.  One can only assume there will be an iPad Pro next year.  Otherwise, that's the dumbest name in history.  Let the rumors begin...

2012 27" iMac i7, 2010 27" iMac i7, 2011 Mac Mini i5
iPad Air, iPad Mini Retina, (2) iPhone 5S, iPod Touch 5
Time Capsule 5, (3) AirPort Express 2, (2) Apple TV 3

Agreed. No reason to add "Air" to the name. Redundant.

LOL people should just enjoy whatever phone they prefer and stop being d-bags about other phones they don't use. Fanboys are pathetic, regardless of whether they are Android or Apple ones.

Definitely a letdown.

Loving the case though.

Also: retina mini w/ A7!

I’m REALLY HAPPY they have unified their “modern iOS device” lineup with the same hardware. Everything available as “new” is now A7. Applause to Apple for that.

I'm confused. A7 just bought the iPhone to iPad 4 graphics levels with the A6X (a6X had double the GPU resources of the A6, thus the same-ish performance as the A7 on purely GPU), but they're saying the same A7 doubled it from the iPad 4...? Yet it's not an A7X?

Yes there is - because it will eventually be called iPad Air 1.

What, lol...I am happy about it. I'm just curious. Are they just not naming it A*X now, or is it really an A7, in which case how did it double the GPU speed from A6X when the A7 in the iPhone was just about the same?

I wouldn't' come to sites like these if "just being happy about it" was enough :P

A big fat yawn. No touch ID on the iPad Air? Hmmm I shouldn't have sold my old iPad.

Maybe the A7 in the iPad has a higher clock-speed than the iPhone 5S? A little disappointed there's no Touch ID though.

iWallet Air (noun); a thinner and lighter wallet that follows new iDevice announcements.

Can't wait to hear from pmz...

I can't say the iPad Mini at $299 is a good deal for me. Only a $30 drop after one year with the Retina and A7 version right there at only 33% more, but I can see it selling well.

Keeping a 1st gen iDevice around may be a first. They certainly didn't do it for the iPad or IPhone.

PS: I'd image the iPad 2 is now gone.

Doesn't seem likely given power consumptions scaling with clock speeds. Doubling resources is far more efficient than doubling clock speed. And even if it was clocked higher, double the performance of the A7 would merit an X, I would think.

So no A7X?

Dump the 2, sell the 4th gen.

Looks nice and should sell very well.

Sadly, with iOS7, I am no longer in the market for iDevices.  Would have loved this.

Your = the possessive of you, as in, "Your name is Tom, right?" or "What is your name?"

You're = a contraction of YOU + ARE as in, "You are right" --> "You're right."

They did increase the memory bus in the A7 chip over the A6, so it could be parts of that chip that are inactive for the iPhone version and/or as 1983 states it could be a faster clock rate on the CPU and GPU.

Surprised an no 802.11ac, surprised at no 8mp camera, surprised at no TouchID.

Still an amazing product but i'll probably get the iPad mini with retina display, keep my iPad 3 and see what gets added to next year's update.

Since Apple changed the name I'm a bit surprised they didn't do more feature wise to distinguish it from the mini. I guess they really don't want to do anything that gives the appearance they're joining th laptop/tablet convergence bandwagon.
A7, good
retina, good
16 Gb, grrrr
no 12", sigh

Price in Australia went from $539 to $599. And even the iPad 2 went up $20!

Apple you $uck

Yes!!! I thought it was brilliant. Best ad in a long time. No doubt to be ripped off soon in a Samsung ad featuring a slow-zooming shot of a Volkswagen with the new Galaxy Note 112 behind it.

How'd the exchange rate move over the last year?

You're all wrong. It's iPad Nair. Who wears short shorts?

It's got a new yellow bus with 68k level 1cache. And three stroke engine. With a 150 baud Wifis.

I'm guessing they kept the iPad 2 because it has the same specs as the iPad Mini which they also kept. iPad 3 wouldn't have made sense as it was discontinued. iPad 4 would have been appropriate but no 30pin dock for legacy users.

Also who in the right mind would buy an iPad 2 for 399usd when an iPad Air costs 499usd which is 3 generations newer LOL!
Same with iPad mini vs iPad mini with Retina - 299 vs 399 when the SOC is generations newer.
