Retina iPad mini requires Personal Pickup for purchase at Apple Stores, units now arriving [u]

Thread Starter
Apple retail stores on the east coast opened Tuesday with no stock of the new Retina display-equipped iPad mini following its surprise early morning launch, with staff recommending that customers purchase the tablet online.

Update: The "Personal Pickup" option has gone live on Apple's online store, and many of the company's retail storefronts indicate the tablet is available now for customers who wish to purchase online and pick up in person, rather than wait for shipping.

Spot checks of Apple retail stores in the eastern time zone indicate that the company has not yet seeded its first-party retail network with supplies of the hotly anticipated slate. Employees at some stores told AppleInsider that they did not know when inventory would arrive and recommended ordering online as the quickest way to obtain a device, while others suggested that stock will arrive in the next few days.

When the new iPad mini does makes its way to stores, it will only be available via Apple's "Personal Pickup" service. Customers will need to buy the tablet at Apple.com, then pick up the reserved unit at their local Apple store.

It is possible that Apple retail stores will receive initial stock of the device later this afternoon, and AppleInsider will update this article throughout the day as retail outlets in the central United States and on the west coast open their doors.

Apple opened online sales of the new iPad mini early Tuesday morning, catching consumers and media alike off guard. Cupertino has previously indicated that supplies of the thin and light high-resolution tablet will be constrained, with CEO Tim Cook saying that it was "unclear" whether the company could meet demand for the device over the busy holiday season.

Currently at the Apple Store in London, ON. They said they have a small shipment and to come back in a hour. I also ordered online just incase.

Order online and wait for 2-3 days. Big deal?

Ships in one or two days, but doesn't arrive at this California address until Nov. 20-22. Not complaining, just filling in details.

G-Note, glad to hear they'll be available in Canada, which wasn't on the earlier list. Hope your store was right.

Brings more people into the apple community to have them go into an apple store for pickup.
Just ordered one online for pickup. Supposed to get a pickup notification within an hour. Guess I will cancel the earlier order that said it would ship at the end of the month....

Picking up mine today at the Apple Store.

I didn't see any available in the east coast, but are there any cellular models available for in-store pick up yet?

Well the shipping dates havent slip yet so maybe they have a decent amount of inventory.

Are the Retina Minis demo units out at Apple stores?

Waited for 2 hours and then they told me they couldn't sell them. So frustrating. Guess I will just keep my online order

Does that mean they have them in stock?

What location?

I have an email confirming I can pick one up between 9-12am in the Sydney store. 9am is 2.5hrs away so I'm sure someone in America will get theirs first.
Anyone know if they are limiting quantities to purchase?

Don't be so sure. Sydney is way closer to China than North America...

'Get theirs' = 'Pick up theirs'.

I mean that stores are still open in the US. Low and behold the poster after you has already go their hands on one! I look forward to their comments.

And to anyone interested. I looked at 2 Sydney stores and only Wi-Fi models were available for Personal Pickup. No cellular models.

Here's what it says on the Apple site:

There is a maximum of 2 reservations per customer. Apple reserves the right to refuse, limit or cancel a reservation if Apple determines that a customer has provided misleading or fraudulent information and/or abused, disrupted or attempted to circumvent the reservation system.

Wow.. that was fast.

Actually, it did. It went up about 3:30pm EST. But all the stocks are now gone. I reserved mine and picking it up after work.

Edit: It's back. Try it now.

I was using mobile (App) version of Apple Store when it did not work. Your link to full version of Apple store indicates that availability varies depending on store location and model you wish to reserve.

Chicago Michigan Store has it available for pick up!

Seems the white model is the most limited. My friend is looking for thei white 16gb, but only white 32gb is available for reservation. There are plenty of space grey though.

It's interesting that the chart "cash payouts for iPads" running in the panel to the right of the news items shows LTE-enabled iPads selling for only $5 to $6 more than wi-fi only models of the same storage capacity. For a feature that costs what, around $125 at time of purchase, that doesn't seem to make sense. Any thoughts?

I have it from an extremely reliable source that corporate told stores zero walkins, zero exceptions. Until further notice all iPad mini Retina sales require personal pickup. Well where it exists that is
