Official Apple Store app for iPad debuts on iOS

Thread Starter
The iPad gained a bespoke Apple shopping experience Wednesday as a new Apple Store app designed specifically for the company's tablets hit the App Store, bringing a gesture-based user interface and a listing of trending products.

Apple Store for iPad

Apple Store for iPad, a separate download from its iPhone counterpart, has several unique features designed to take advantage of the increased screen real estate available on the iPad. The number of products shown on screen for a particular category, for example, can be changed by pinching in or out --?the most dense view removes text from the display entirely, leaving only a six-by-four grid of product photos.

Individual product detail pages utilize a split pane view similar to that found in the iPad-based smart displays in Apple's retail stores. Customers can purchase and customize products directly from the app, including specifying engraving for iPads and iPods and designating a purchase for in-store Personal Pickup.

Apple Store for iPad

Other iPad-only additions include a new "Now Trending" section which shows a dynamic listing of currently-popular products based on what users buy, share socially, or review, and a map view for the app's retail store finder that plots area locations on an overhead map, which can also be overlaid with availability information for specific products.

Apple Store for iPad is available now as a free, 22-megabyte download from the App Store.

I don't see it yet

Well it's about time! I guess that I can delete the iPhone version from my iPads now.

It's there, because I just downloaded it.

Go through the link in the article and it finds it. The App Store hasn't been updated to list it when clicking on Apps Made by Apple or even when searching for it.

Why is it two apps? Why? Apple, what’s going on with you?

Less important is the fact that WWDC’s videos are two apps. How could it have been hard to just update the old one? I don’t like these little cracks.

I found it by searching for it, I didn't click on the link.

I searched for Apple Store App, and listed iPad only apps, it showed up.

Not a universal app? Interesting. 22Mb hardly warrants them separating the apps, especially given they would be reusing certain elements.

What happened to Stores? Old version had a prominent button to take you to your local Apple Store for Genius Bar appointment, etc. Couldn't even find it on search. Many non- intuitive interface features such as no indication that you should swipe the product menu at the top for more choices (an arrow head or ellipsis, nothing.) When you drill down there's no way to get back to the home page. Minimalism in the service of minimalism. I hate this app. Thank god the old one is still on my iPad.

Go buy a Nexus7 and see how their apps are.  Report to us your findings next week Tuesday

I finally found it at the end of the iPad Apps for Apple. Once I switched the sort to release date it popped up first. It still isn't showing up in the search results for Apple Apps.

On the menu on top, you just click on Apple Retail Store.

Then, on the next screen when you get to your store, you can choose from Genius Bar, Workshops and My Reservations.

I haven't really used the iPhone version much, but this iPad version doesn't seem difficult at all.

It seems it is a separate app due to requiring iOS 7 while the app for iPhone requires iOS 6

Good idea : )

And that’s somehow an excuse for Apple to do worse than is possible? Come on.

Did you actually try the app? It's actually quite nice. What's the big deal if it's universal or not? I rather like having an app specifically designed for iPad to take advantage of the bigger display.

I’m sure it is. That’s not in the slightest what I’m discussing.

Explain why the same app needs to be two apps, then. Explain why it makes sense for Apple–the company known for simplicity over all others–to have two apps that do the same thing.

It's so they can charge you twice for the app. /s

No really.  Give Android a shot and see how wonderful it is.  I love 90% of iOS and will accept the 10% I don't particularly like.  I'm just sick of all these crybabies who grumble about iOS.  Oh the button is no longer green, Oh the font is different, ect.  Bull.

Go to Android and see how f-up that OS is.

Not an argument. At all. Either discuss properly or don’t bother replying.

 Oh the font is different

Speaking of which, Bing changed its font yesterday to one of the Windows staple fonts.

It’s absolutely hideous. Just about everything that can be wrong about a font is wrong here.

But they don't do the exact same thing do they? The iPad app was specifically designed for the iPad. Not just a blown up iPhone app.

I highlighted your post to see if there was anything hidden in white to explain this. There wasn’t.

The real issue with this may be that relevant apps are not displayed simply because the developer does not yet have an iPad only version.

For example Asana is a great team and business to-do task management application. But -- it's still an iPhone sized app.

If it causes Asana's developers to get off their butt and complete an iPad version, that's great. If it causes 15,000,000 businesses to miss the fact that they can use Asana, that's bad

Would be cool if Apple would release the app in The Netherlands too. It's only in USA now 1tongue.gif

Tallest Skil, there are times when a developer looks at an app and decides there should be two apps that take advantage of the targeted devices.

This does not mean the developer is taking any steps backwards. It just means there is a developer reason for two apps.

Take a moment to actually download, install and use the free iPad app to maybe see what has actually been developed and compare the app to the iPhone version. You might learn something.

I developed an app specifically for iPad because of the device's screen real estate. When I decided to create an iPhone version of the app, I realized the app HAD to be redesigned for the smaller screen real estate.

Not everything needs to be complained about.

That doesn't matter if you only want to see what the fuss is about. And you should, because it's a freaking awesome app. Since the app is free you should create a new account on the USA Store and download it. Don't need a Credit Card.

Geesh, recently you've been suggesting folks consider Android products more than any other poster here. It almost seems like you've made the same suggestion a dozen times in the past 24 hours?

Okay, is everyone pretending that I mean to say the app should look the same on both devices? Is that where the confusion is? Why would anyone think that?

There aren’t two Pages. There aren’t two Remotes. There aren’t two GarageBands. There aren’t two AirPort Utilities. There aren’t two of ANY OTHER APPLE APP. All of them manage, somehow, apparently magically, to have BOTH DEVICES’ UIS in one app. Why are there two Apple Stores?!

I make the suggestions because of all the crybabies here grumbling about buttons being a different color or the fonts being wrong.  Seriously.  Go use a competitors device and see how far ahead Apple is.

Try using "Bye Felicia"

Olbermann won't mind.

I'm surprised, the iPhone has had it for years, so this is the first time for IPad, took them awhile, and with what tallest skil is saying I figure there should be 1 app, with the same features on both, just can have all the IPad only features hiden.

I figure since we all have been able to use Safari for the Apple Store there was no big incentive for the iPhone App being blown up for the iPad. Besides, the old app is portrait mode only.

I don't think the 'experience' with this app would be the same on an iPhone. It really was designed for use on a larger screen. Will try it out on a Mini, but I think it's best experienced on the 9.7 inch-er.

Yes yes, they could've made it into a single app, but they're quite different. Look at the screen dumps: iPhone are all portrait, iPad are all landscape. And who knows; iPhone users might whine about the added 22MB, rendered useless on the iPhone.

edit: perhaps their system doesn't allow for country-specific apps to be on multiple devices: the new Store app for iPad is US-only and the iPhone version is global.

Scratch that question; I just saw that someone posted that the iPad app is only available on the US App Store

Then you probably also noted that you can create a new account for the US Store and download it. Welcome to the forum.

Hey, thanks for the warm welcome - I've been reading AppleInsider for years on a daily basis but never thought to post on the forums.

I have tried having a US account before (a few years ago) but it caused a bit of hassle - I just wait for the local version to come out now.
