The new 20 gig iPods are selling now. Has anyone tested out the new software? Is there a place one can get in online? Does it come on the new CD?

The new firmware isn't out yet. The new models aren't out yet. Sure, they've been announced, but they're not shipping yet. If the firmware was somehow available, it would be on Apple's website. It's not on their website. I've been checking every few days.

I called Apple Palo Alto today to ask if they had the new 10 gigs, which they didn't but they did have the new 20s... So if anybody is near palo alto, get them there.

I don't know about the firmware though...

How can you upload the firmware? Is there a CD?

yes it came with a CD, the firmware is version 1.2

but for the life of me i cannot find the updater!!!

I am trying to upgrade my older 5 gig iPod and it is NOT working... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> sorry to get your hopes up, but I dont think it is possible to update the firmware until apple releases the updater... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

the OS 9 iPod installer or os X iPod installer...

I dont think you will find what you are looking for, but i'll send it anyway...

dude, not that simple... we're talking about 90 megs of CD here

that was the only "iPod installer" package on the CD...

is there some way i could send you a list of the files on the CD?
the thread to what i sent you is: iPodCD--&gt;iPod Installer Mac OS X---&gt;iPod Software.mpkg
the only other thing i can think of is the iPod help folder: iPodCD--&gt;iPod Installer Mac OS X---&gt;Packages---&gt;iPodHelp.pkg

but thats 3 megs.... u still want it?

the old updater was in Contents/Resources/firmware...you had to control click the pkg file to view the stuff inside...

yeah i read your email... for some reason i dont think it is on the CD... also I cant get the clock to start either... maybe its because im on 9 and not X? i dono... im goona head over to apple's discussion pages to check it out

OK - For those of you thinking about running the new 20 Gig firmware on older iPods, you can forget about it. I've heard online, maybe at iPod Lounge or iPoding, that people have tried this and have found that the old physical scroll wheel is not supported by the firmware that comes with the new 'Pods, rendering the iPod unusable. You can probably revert to the older firmware version with the proper updater, but are you willing to risk it? I'm not.

Wait a week or two for the firmware to come out and enjoy your iPod.

Oh absolutely.

I mean, *I* heard online that if you hold a stick of dynamite in your hand and light it, it'll blow your arm off! Here, why don't you try it and tell us how it goes... <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

Different hardware is more likely than not going to require different firmware. Wait for the updater... or not. Heck, it's not *my* iPod you might be toasting. Go for it!

Ok, Atomic Smart Ass, here's one post on iPoding by "wltr" that spells it all out:

"Ok first things first. go over <a href="http://www.iweenie.com/ipod.shtml" target="_blank">http://www.iweenie.com/ipod.shtml</a> for the firmware update. It is a 3~4M file that uncompresses into a 32M file. Take that file and replace the "Firmware" file found in the iPod 1.1 Updater (Contents/Resources/Firmware). Then simply run the app and presto-whamo you are the pround owner of an iPod w/ the 1.2 firmware THAT IS TOTALLY USELESS . The thing is that, just like everyone said , the scroll wheel does not work.

Ok so with that said. I have been playing around and found that in the diagnostic mode (still works in 1.2!!) the test for the hex value of the scroll wheel shows changes when i move the wheel. So my quack theory is that the new scroll wheel just changes a value in a different register, maybe as a way to not have the new one need to operate or emulate the old wheel.

Also i tested the playcount feature and it works flawlessly (in one test ). Yeah Smart Playlists.

The audible.com files will still not copy over, which leads me to believe that something is a little off in the way that the hacked iPod is talking to iTunes?"

Then again, if you want to risk your iPod or waste your time installing useless shit, be my guest. Just don't criticize people without expecting them to bite back.

trust me, i have read them all...but there are a couple of options to install the firmware, and i would like to test them out...and yes, it was a smartass remark, but i hate when people quote undocumented sources when saying you "can't do that"...there are many ways to skin a cat...

i've tried to cut it apart, with the same results as some. i just can't decipher the disc image files from the file - it seems there is no 5 gig image - but i just cant tell - but the size (32 meg) seems to indicate it just contains the 10 and 20 gig image, and, alas, i have only a measley 5 gig. i cut the firmware out of the file rather unscientifically, and it seemed to semi work, so i think it's the lack of 5 gig disc image, rather than the firmware that is the holdback...i could be completely wrong tho...

oh and when it says "do not disconnect" after its been installed, thats just the new warning message to make sure you eject it before disconnecting. i stared at this son of a bitch for a good 25 minutes before getting clued in that it was done installing... <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

Ok I have a question on the new software...
The clock's been at midnight New Year's Day for the past 45 minutes... is the clock not available on old iPods, or do we need iCal first to get the clock to work?
