Spammers are taking over parts of this forum

What is going on with this nonsense being posted here in some of these forums? Spammers I think are taking control.

It seems to be hitting a number of forums but Huddler doesn't help by allowing a new member to post at least 138 times in the first few minutes of signing up. At least the spam filter is picking up some of it but nowhere near enough.

I've noticed a slew of new spammers on other sites as well. Someone must've broken the latest anti-spammer protections and now the flood is upon us.

I know you can’t block the IP, Marvin, but have you checked to see if it’s coming from India? As far as I remember, I blocked Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia IPs from posting, but I left India and the Philippines generically open (because of the number of legitimate users we get from there).

Wish we had an admin around to nip this sort of thing in the bud.

It's coming from India. Most of the spam comes from there now. They switched the spam filter to akismet, which is a global spam database so hopefully it'll adapt to it.

I'm going to use Apple as a example but it pertains to every company. If you buy a product, let's say a charger for a iPhone that's made by a company other than Apple than that charger is a third-party product.

Spam can come from all sorts of places but it does seem to originate more from poorer or developing countries just like eBay and email scams. There have been big cases in western countries:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-20088487-93/spam-king-wallace-indicted-for-facebook-spam/
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/colorado-spam-king-murder/

"Self-described spam king Sanford Wallace surrendered to the FBI today after being indicted on charges he broke into Facebook accounts to send 27 million spam e-mails on the social network."
"Davidson used the Internet to send thousands of unsolicited e-mails promoting stocks of various companies for which Uselton controlled an equity interest. Uselton compensated Davidson based on the corresponding increase in the volume of stock sales. Davidson also helped Uselton artificially manipulate the price of stock in the market using false press releases and other financial news. Uselton scored more than $4.6 million during his 20-month stock fraud campaign, according to the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission."

See how much money can be generated with false news on stock. The move to rich mobile content has increased this because of the scale. Instead of malware trying to scam people out of bank accounts, it's faster, easier and less punishable to just get loads of people to click a link. That's all Google's trying to get people to do every day.

It means the quality control behind the products are not that well constructed.

Is there not a way to limit the rate at which a new user can post?

It's really getting ridiculous. Some sites don't put up a new user's post without it first being approved by a moderator.

Oh, it’s even worse with Huddler, but for the sake of further incursions, I won’t expound in any capacity. Also, I think I signed something that said I wouldn’t.

Is Alzheimer’s a valid defense in court? Anyway, not telling.

The AI bot is almost as bad.  Look at the new postings and 80%+ are AI generated.
