I think you do need a SuperDrive, as iDVD detects the hardware at startup. Currently I think it does have to be a SuperDrive, as iDVD won't work with other DVD writers like the Formac Divideon (although Formac do supply their own DVD authoring software). Companies are trying to get Apple to open iDVD up to third party writers, especially LaCie.

I'm not necessarily asking about using 3rd party hardware.
Primarily I'm thinking of doing the editing and everything in iDVD, and send off to my brother [w/superdrive] and have him burn it for me and mail it to me.
That's unfortunate if I'm unable to even do editing myself even w/out a superdrive.

I'm not sure here. I know that you can save the finished project on the HD( standalone), but I don't know if it's possible to start iDVD without a SD.

Ive been in this situation. I filmed at parties, my friends getting drunk, dumb destruction stuff, all during my senior year in HS (01-02) and dumped all the DV onto my B&W G3 for editing. My brother had a quicksilver 867 with a superdrive so after i was done transfered the edited quicktime files to my brother's comp over ethernet. I never tried to load up iDvd though. I bought iDVD2 and had it sent to me but it was an upgrade so i couldnt just throw that on my comp. I was to lazy to bring all the iDVD files from my bro's quicksilver over to my G3.
Oh well, i still have a kick ass DVD of my senior year, very bad things on it though
