My iPod died tonight.

Rainstorm. On my bicycle, beside Hyde Park, 2:00am. Stopped working. I just got home and literally poured water out of it.

Would anyone like to speculate on the chances of my iPod ever working again?

if you let it dry, and tell apple "it just stopped working" they might repair it for you... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

It was making a sort of... fizzing noise.

It's plainly shagged. I prised the poor baby open with a butter knife and put on a chair beside the radiator to dry out. It's very damp inside.

Bugger, blast, bollocks and shit. No-one's going to give me a new iPod for Christmas.

Oh, and my three-days-old Sony Ericsson T300 was in my other pocket. It at least works for a second or two when you turn it on. I think it's probably a bit hardier than the iPod, but we'll see in the morning, eh?

Electronics are funny, but mechanics (harddrives) are not. I would probably charge in in a wall all night for two reasons.

One, when plugged into a computer the drive is accessed like a harddrive. That might cause troubles.

Two, charging it heats it up and will help it dry out.

Yeah but charging it could also short it if the water in the ipod has any ions in it...

I'd say let it dry for a good few days before putting any power through it.
As mentioned the water could short out the electronics.

Good morning and thanks for the advice.

The phone actually works this morning. Polyphonic ring tones are virtually inaudible for some reason but the others sound OK. The LCD screen is frosted with mist.

Blow dryer on a low setting. The moving air, even if it's not hot will dry the insides.

The Pod's a gonner.

When I plug it in to the computer the Apple logo shows and I hear the hard-drive spin up, but it won't mount and System Profiler can't detect it.

And my new phone won't work either.

Lessons:
  • the iPod needs protection from rain.
  • Put it somewhere dry when you're on a bike in the rain.
  • I am a Podless twat.

I remembered having seen it. There do appear to be people who get their iPods to work again after BATHING with it. There might be some hope yet. But maybe not too much. Anyway, I hope things'll get better unexpectedly.

Well, Hassan, it seems that you have some bad karma and you need to pay back the universe. It tried to settle up with you when your bike was stolen, but you decided to take fate into your own hands and now it needed to do this. Some sort of universal balance has been restored. I know that doesn't make you feel any better, but it makes me feel much safer knowing that you have paid your debt.

Just kidding. It sucks to have your 'pod die. Hey, at least it doesn't FOOL you into thinking its charged and you go out shopping only to have it die 1 hour later. :/

That sucks. So did you decrement the "Counting iPods" thread?

For what it's worth, drying out the phone could get it working again, because there aren't that many moving parts. I soaked my Moto MicroTac in Mountain Dew some time ago. I soaked it in de-ionized water and dried it off. It worked again, except for the vibrating ringer.

With the iPod, the problem is a wet hard drive. That hard drive can't take impurities too kindly, I would expect.

Of course, if any Magic Smoke came out of the iPod at any time, then it's a total goner. Sorry.

be really naughty!!!

Go to your local PC world (the UK ones sell small bits of apple kit) and buy an iPod.

Switch it for you bust one and take it back, demanding a refund.

or anything like this... Most credit cards have some sort of insurance. Take the new ipod out of the box, drop it (the box) in a puddle and but the bust iPod in there. Phone the CC co and tell them you dropped it in a puddle on the way home!

PS. Make sure the HD is wiped first. You might be able to do this if you can get the drive into a puter. They are generally sealed units, so providing the drive electronics are not fried!
