Up Coming iPods - Major Surprise? - Page 2

Maybe, perhaps, one of these years it will sink in that the hardest thing to pin down is a release date. Release dates are completely arbitrary. They can get pushed back because channel inventory didn't empty as fast as someone liked, because of a last-minute glitch in software or hardware or manufacturing, or in the supply chain, or because Word was like beep beep beep beep beep and it devoured the press release.

Unfortunately, it's what people seem to clamor for the most, so people who really should know better start pulling dumb stunts like MacWhispers just did. The bottom line is that nobody, and I mean nobody, knows when Apple will release something until either Steve walks on stage or Nathalie Welch fires a press release over the wires. Yes, it sucks. Get used to it, and you'll lose a lot less hair following rumors.

I'm sorry but I would love this. It's a heck of a lot better than the umpteen little plastic stands that are being marketed to lean your iPod up against.

Yeah, I agree here. I want something to prop my iPod up on instead of leaving it on or in its case. Good idea for Apple to make a nice one, maybe laser engraving?

Sorry to keep swingging this thread, but speaking of a docking station I came across <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/johnhuber/iPodbay/PhotoAlbum10.html" target="_blank">the slot this guy rigged</a> today. If I thought I could pull it off I would do this.

Well you will be able to signup for the Apple music service for that new iPod... whatever it may be.

I think if Apple releases a 40 GB hard drive it will be more expensive than the low end iBook.

Here are the iPods serious competitors. With Dell selling iPods as an example of how great the iPod is, I don't think Apple wants to fall behind on this great product.

The Gigabeat MEG50JS
<a href="http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-937893.html" target="_blank">http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-937893.html</a>

Creative JukeBox Zen
<a href="http://www.t3.co.uk/reviews/default.asp?pagetypeid=2&articleid=14905&subsectio nid=756&subsubsectionid=647" target="_blank">http://www.t3.co.uk/reviews/default.asp?pagetypeid=2&articleid=14905&subsectio nid=756&subsubsectionid=647</a>

Neuros MP3 Player
<a href="http://www.neurosaudio.com/" target="_blank">http://www.neurosaudio.com/</a>

I would like to see the iPod get the following;
1) 40 Gig
2) AM/FM radio
3) Line in Microphone
4) Video Player
5) View files stored on HD outside of the songs.
6) Bluetooth phone capability with phone partner, e.g. Sprint or AT&T
7) Built in Broadcast Capability (like Neuros)

Great fun doing the research. Really like the iPod.

I'll take the one that <a href="http://www.hotmp3gear.com/Multimediaplayer.htm" target="_blank">Won Best of show at the 2003 CES in Las Vegas</a>.

 The Archos Multimedia Player 120/140

Here's something interesting.

i, too, would like to see essentially an "ipod docking bay" in upcoming mac cases, but i would want the ipod slightly modified so that its firewire port is on one end, and the headphone port on the opposite end (instead of right next to each other, as they are now).

that way, you slide the ipod into the bay (there would be a spring loaded door such as a zip drive slot to keep dust out), and the firewire port on the ipod plugs into the firewire plug at the back of the bay. but since the headphone port is on the opposite end (i.e. the one facing you when you shove the ipod in), you can leave the headphones plugged in and still listen to your mp3s while you are on the computer. plus, you now have a 40 GB removeable, battery-powered hard drive at your disposal.
