Well, maybe it's better looking in real life. It's supposed to have a lovely screen, and that camera in the back will do it proud.

I'm just noooot suuuure about this bar-of-soap direction they're taking over there ...

Groo.

I'd save my money for... something, you know, hypothetical, were I in the market for a new communications device.

Which I'm not quite yet.
My T300 is like a bar of soap and it's the best telephone I've ever had. Better, I reckons, than my T68, for all it doesn't have bluetooh and all.
Yes.

Were I in the market for a communications device -- a device I could be cough fairly certain was compatible with iSync, I think I'd wait a month or three.

Rather then buy that.

I guess one issue is whether you want a "communications device" or a smaller mobile phone. Even though I am amazed by the capabilities of phones like the P800 and Palm-based phones, I keep wanting something smaller, like the Sony Ericsson Z1010.

We currently don't have any mobile phones in our household, but want to buy some. At this point I think I'll get a V60 or similar flip-phone for my wife (and share it) and wait to see how Sony Ericsson's and Apple's products evolve in the next 6 months.

My thoughts: The shape is odd. It better have Bluetooth.

So, New, what does the Mobil.se article reveal?

Not much really... It is supposed to be the successor of the t68i. The screen will be radically improved. thousands of colors and a higher resolution. Built in camera (like harald said) and a slot for a memory stick (like the p800).
The official release is slated for the 4th of march.
I guess the form-factor will be much like the t600, (which looks really cool).
Even though not mentioned, Bluetooth is a given. So is iSync compatibility.

Ah, now I'm interested! The longer I think about getting a new phone, the more I realize that Bluetooth (along with iSync compatibility) is a must for me. Good synchronization is essential if I want to replace my Palm with a mobile phone.

Me too. I'd love for my next phone to be something like the Nokia 7250 (designwise) with Bluetooth.

I still don't dig the S-E interface, and the ID of this new phone is... well... pants.

My guess is that this phone will look verry attractive for us mac-heads indeed. I also hear there will be three more announcements on tuesday as well.
As always, (and right now especially), you just might want to hold out for a couple of months after the release of these phones before you jump on the bandwagon.
Say until mid-summer/ early fall.
By then, all the technical issues with the new models will be sorted out. (There are always technical issues with the first releases). And you'll make sure nothing else comes along to blow this thing away, (hypothetically).

the retro-walkman / game&watch style has potetial. Just look at the t600. the t300 isn't quite there I admitt, but the kids still love it. Lets wait for the real pictures. I think it has potential.
Now how would Ives and his team design a phone? That's what I want to know!
the new 3G clamshell-phone also looks quite nice, btw...

Hello to the members and listeners of the board. It is my first post here but may be interesting

The T610 works via Bluetooth exactly the way the t68i does. I tested all sync features for Addressbook and iCal, the Bluetooth features of the Adressbook and the GPRS Modem. Pure Bluetooth fun. But still my most wanted feature was to have entries for addresses and birthdays in the phone ... unfortunatly still only phone numbers, email addresses and company name.

So the advantages in relation to the t68i are build in camera, better display and design. The only disadvantage with the current softwareversion is: it is slow in reaction to the user interaction. Hopefully this will evolve with a next release.

Finaly the t610 and the Z1010 will be the perfect mobile companions for the Mac. Which one to prefer depends technicaly from the available network coverage in the personal environment. And if money or time counts I would choose the T68i. For the time being there is no better phone regarding Mac connectivity available.

My good friend Mr. Sabbah loves his T300. He points out, quite accurately, that it's an absolute design classic. And frankly he's right. I'm coming round to this design direction.

delfi: Oh my god! Is this really the Oracle of Delphi speaking? Kann das Orakel von Delphi nach langem Schweigen wieder die Zukunft voraussagen? Tell us more!

I hear that the Z1010 won't reach US shores for at least another year. That disappointing news makes me focus on the T610. If it's the anointed successor to the T68i, which is selling at bargain prices (free) right now, I imagine the T610 will hit the US before the Z1010.

I'm definitely going to wait until the March 4 announcement(s). But after that, how long will residents of the US have to wait to purchase these new goodies? I really want to buy a mobile asap. But I would rather not be stuck with the last-generation T68i.

New: Where will the March 4 announcement take place again? Where will we be able to read about it first (except for here)?

The Z1010 isn't exactly a *small* phone.

Someone holding a Z1010.

Looks to me like it's approximately the same size as a t68 when closed, but thicker. Unfortunately it's ridiculously big when open. (IMHO)

Which is why I hate clamshell phones.

That is indeed pretty big. Maybe I'll have to live with the T68i or the T610 after all. If only the Siemens S55 would get to the US soon as well...

I'm sure a lot of that size could be eliminated if it didn't have TWO BLOODY CAMERAS.

I always buy my GSM phones from:

He's got the S55 in stock.

And, all the phones he sells are unlocked.

I wholeheartedly agree with Jonathan here. Cameras in phones will continue to be useless gadgets in the near future. Addresss book and calendar synchronization via Bluetooth is far more useful. I guess the just balance between gadgetry and usefulness is difficult to find.

"He" also prices his phones quite a lot higher than I'm willing to pay. My geek-drive will only push me so far. And to top it all off, the Siemens S55 is still not compativle with iSync. Might as well go with a free T68i for now.

Yeah, i hear you on the 'pricing' ... the reason I buy from him is that I can get a fully unlocked world phone, without being tied to a plan. My travels take me from Canada to Europe quite often, so the ability to throw in a pre-paid SIM wherever I go, makes it a worthwhile amount to spend.

Of course, if you're only going to be using the phone in the US, then there's no point to buying an unlocked phone as you'll be tied to a plan anyway.

I'm still trying to figure out the whole locked/unlocked deal. I am based primarily in the US. But I travel to France and Switzerland to visit my family several times a year and would love to be able to use my phone when I'm over there. Since I wouldn't use it too much abroad, I was simply thinking about using the overseas plan of my US provider (presumably T-Mobile, which has good international coverage). Of course, getting a prepaid SIM card locally (or borrowing a relative's SIM card) would likely give me much cheaper rates, especially since I'd be making lots of local (French and Swiss) calls.

So much to learn about GSM technology...

It sounds like we won't have to wait too long to get a sibling of the T610 in the US market. From the infoSync article:

[quote]A GSM 850/1800/1900 model named T616 will be launched for the US market in Q2 2003.

My wireless analyst brother-in-law confirmed the Q2 arrival of several Bluetooth GSM phones in the US market for AT&T wireless, Cingular and T-Mobile. I think think I'm going to wait for the T616.
