New PowerMac pictures leaked - Page 11

Looks like you are spot on Eugene. Checking out the current AGP Mac cards the Nvidia Geforce 4MX fits the bill ( not conclusive without a view of the back of one of these).

But from the way Nvidia Geforce 4MX fits to metal bracket ( i.e. card over top of bracket) and side screw) and other component layout it looks pretty certain. I did a quick comparison of the similar details here:

Shame. I was looking forward to spying the new 9700 in there . Guess it points to it as the stock OEM card for the new G4 along with the recent iMac and current Powermac.

I don't think Apple's posturing on the 'no press pass' would stop the bigger boys from posting such a strong a rumour'. It has not in the past. And Think Secret would have nothing to lose since they blew open the correct contents of the SJ presentation well before MWNY for instance.

I just have a feeling that they are aware of details of the new model and are quiet because of NDA etc or other similar reason. Not sure how this relates to Think Secret however. Perhaps MOSR will put it's money where it's mouth is and post further specs this week.

Re: multiple processors and big heat sink.

As much as the notion of a quadG4 sounds like the DB, the current Kernel of Darwin only supports 2 processors.

On the other hand, the new PowerMacs are rumored to be released with 10.2 which maybe has a revised kernel. Hmmm. I think we would have heard about that by now. Enough people have played with Jaguar preview to have noticed and it is unlikely to be the kind of revision that is added at the last second before the product is shipped.

(Er, off the top of my head, I think hostinfo at command line will give you information like Kernel version (current release is 5.5) and number of processors supported.)

Yes we know that already , as stated earlier in this thread. The photo IS photoshopped, but probably only so to delete the background around the machine.

The photos are not photoshopped.

The pdf seems dodgy. If it was produced by apple, it would feel like apple. Apple font, logo, graphics.

The pdf seem to have been drawn from the photos - and a little off at that. The speaker in the pdf is higher than that in the photo. The vents/ports at the bottom are lower on the pdf than the pic. For something having very little tech detail - to have the weight of the fan is not consistent with the vague nature of the page.

I say disregard the pdf and the 7lb heatsink, etc.

I read the number on the board as: 820-1309-02 if that helps anyone.

The photographed machine is apple - but a prototype of the latest g4, or a revision we are yet to see? Who knows...

Someone at MacNN made an Apple pic of it with photoshop , look s good.

BTW, I'm beginning to think that this was a sanctioned Apple leak, intentionally made to look as if its not one. Comes right after a weak MWNY, everyone is pissy, etc. The guy had his hands on this machine obviously, yet all we get are tantalizing generic and only semi-useful info from him. It seems too coincidental. Oooh, look, there's a big heatsink! Whatever could it be? The only thing it shows is DDR, which is a given since its on the Xserve. Of course, it doesnt tell us if its faux DDR (bandwidth to the CPU remains the same) or not.

Do you really think Apple will release a pro box that&rsquo;s as inelegant as what&rsquo;s depicted above?

The last Power Mac that Apple released that looked so unfinished was the original Power Macintosh G3.

Depicted above is another rehashed version of El Capitan, which, though long in the tooth, is still the best pro desktop case ever designed. (I&rsquo;m saying &ldquo;best&rdquo; to mean the best combination of functionality and aesthetics.)

Let me say a few words about the holes in the front.

I think they are USB/firewire ports. It's already been mentioned that to plug a digital camera or something like that into the back of a computer is a pain, and it's not 'user friendly'. I think apple will be putting at least one of each in the near future. It would make sense.

Now it's not in the apple style to put a little plastic hatch like i've seen in pc's. Nor would it be apple's style to have ugly bare plugs at the front. The sockets are hidden by the tilt of the hole.

I don't really like the way it's done on these photos, but i couldn't think of a way to do it any better and prettier...

And can someone ring the number on the cease and desist and check if it's genuine for this case?

Well, the new iMac has the ports on the back and its a machine that is suppose to be "user friendly".

The french site that broke the stories with the pics has since rmoved the pics and in place is the cease and desist letter from Apple legal.

Also, 4 ports on the front, assuming 2 USB and 2 FW would not look clean in the ducts as the plugs are different sizes. Not sure why they'd be just air vents but someone has said because possibly the processor is huge.

It's a lot harder with a tower. you have to to crawl under your desk, walk around to the other side, or pull it closer and turn it. Pain in the arse.

The imac is always going to be within reach. i do see your point though, and think they should have one of each port on the front of the imac. But this bring us back to the problem that no other computer maker seems to have worked out - how to make it look good.

Its very cool!

Apple should just release a keyboard with USB & Firewire. Plug it into two ports in back and have one cable coming out to the front. The ports could be positioned below the USB ports and since the FW electronics wouldn't actually be integrated with the USB Keyboard, they could even draw power.

Let's assume that the case is designed for a very HOT processor and consequently needs lots of cooling. How much does one of those refrigerant cooling devices weigh? I've seen them in PC's and they involve a bit of plumbing, I am not sure that they would weigh 7lbs but they would be heavy.

Rembering the last few Dorsal posts he has predicted good news in August and much better news early next year. Perhapps we are going to see two new machines, an uprated PowerMac range based on the current enclosure 1.2-1.4 with DDR etc. Then early next year a new G5/Power* machine in the new enclosure which requires industrial strenght cooling and will in all probability be very noisey.

This would probably fit in with all the moves to establish Apple firmly at the front end for video and 3D. The new January/March 03 UltimateMac would cost a lot more if an IBM Power* processor was used, but that wouldn't matter beacuse it would be aimed at a market that is used to paying thousands more for SGI based machines.

Just to speak up as another Photoshop retoucher (not now but for most of the 90s)...

I think it's real. The jaggies are pretty consistent.. it's just a heavily compressed jpeg.

But the bottom has most definitely been airbrushed in photoshop. It has a finer pixel pattern than the rest of the image. Would have been very easy to do right... maybe it's a really fantastic hoaxer trying to psych us out (cue Dr. Evil pinky to mouth)? nah. Maybe there was something identifying down there.

besides, the motherboards are obviously real. Occam's razor would say, take the whole thing. In fact, I'll take two, please.

Everyone talks about a photoshop hoax...isn't it possible that this could in fact be a hoax but not involving photoshop?

Think of it some crafty guy decides to build the front of a fake tower and places it on his own tower or something like that.. is that possible? then u wouldn't notice photoshopping
because he didn't fake it that way. Then again the mobo seems legit.

Personally, I think the jaggies and inconsistencies, not to mention the distortion, leads to the conclusion that the pics are actually DV captures (done poorly).

Somewhere out there, is the original video.....when the video goes online, AI'ers will go apeshjt.

Those are NOT ports on the front for three good reasons.

1. You already have 2 firewire ports (to rear of case and 4 USB ports (2 to rear of case and 2 on keyboard). Why add 2 more of each??

2. The pictures despite being not great quaility show that the 'holes' are not flush as such but set at an angle up with the aluminium part at the top.

There is no other Apple port like that and no reason to have downward facing ports.

3. No Macs have front mounted ports because it ruins the clean lines of the design ( important to Apple and explained in the design of the LCD iMac). 'Most' people will have a Powermac under the desk and leads out of the front would just get in the way with leads running out of the rear up the back of the desk neater. Sure it would be useful for some people but they can always add external hub. This is Apple.

The gloss aluminium finish of the vents would marry well the front panel and apple logo on sides.

It seems that as has been said, air cirulation and effecient cooling are main features on the new G4 photos and details. I would not be at all surpirsed for Apple to be shooting for much quieter machines especially after the noise issues on the QS.

It is pretty obvious where the speakers will be coming from too:



Look no further than the eMac. Improved output with 16 watts and the protection of the speaker grills provided with them if needed.

After seeing that great mock up I think this is definately an Apple design. And why not have four Firewire ports on the front? Apple is pushing digital video and digital audio so hard now. And may still come out with another digital device before the year is out. Besides, it's literally an 'in your face' to USB2.

Besides there are already four USB ports up front (Jobs' Math...two on keyboard + two on ASD).

Of course, my opinion + $13.75 will buy you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

Now most of the time this thing will be really quiet...who gives a crap if it weighs 5 pounds more than normal?

Actually, the holes for ventilation make sense, given the layout of the internal drives and fans.

The fan on the bottom behind the front drives has to pull air from *somewhere*, and the ports make it a straight shot over the drives for maximum cooling, then over the heatsink, and out the back.

If, in fact, this thing is designed for the next generation of CPU, and if, in fact, Apple is really considering the POWER line from IBM, they're going to need all the ventilation they can get - those suckers run much hotter than the G4. Think about the possible future requirements of much hotter chips.

How do you know that there are two firewire at the rear of the case? I wouldn't trust the PDF if that's what you're going by.
