Suggestion for GB in vB

Thread Starter
I have an idea for GeniusBar.

I often find myself clicking on threads in GB which are already solved. Wouldn't it be possible to have the thread icon () in GB changed to a box with a red cross () and if the thread gets solved, a mod changes it to something like this ()?

so it would be much easier to distinguish between solved and unsolved threads.

what do u think ?

it's seems a good idea, but remember that you cannot consider that a problem is solved unless the people who ask help, try it and suceed.
One member can said : i know the answer : just do this .... and it don't work. In that case the problem is not solved.
In an other way, they may be have differents solutions for the problem.

It's not so simple to know if the problem is really solved.

doc ?

Of course the member who started the thread would have to come back and say "It worked !" but normally u do that to thank the ones who helped you, no ?

Yes i expect that.

Perhaps the mods of the genius bar will consider your suggestion. My advice here, is just personal.

i like the idea a lot. not sure we can do it, you'd have to whisper sweet nothin's in Brad's ear, but it'd be cool IMO.

(and useful to boot!)

I concur. Perhaps Brad could grace this thread with a "Suggestion Accepted" image for a change

Even if we decided to implement something like this, it would be very difficult and require some *serious* hacking of the vB software, if it would even be possible with the current version. I mean I'd have to basically rewrite a whole chunck of the system's software to do it.

I might be better off writing my own BB software from scratch...

I'll look into it, though. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

thanks brad !

(I have to push my "hero scala" every day another point up because brad does something useful again... :o )
so the topic starter would be the one who knows basically when the problem is solved..?

(btw what is that 0x2E ???)

...
How many problems have you modified or originated in the past 1 day?

For what it's worth, 0x2E is hexadecimal code for a period "."

In vB, isn't it true that you can have little icons (usually emoticons, thumbs up or thumbs, down, etc) with the topic on the list of topics? If so, is it possible to turn this on for just select forums?

Then you could have two little options...though I would prefer a question mark and a check mark (instead of a cross and a check mark.)
Not gonna happen, folks.
simple solution (though not as elegant as a "X" or "?" and a check for answer).....the person who started the thread can also change the title of the thread....so if the person who needed help at GB gets an answer and tries it and it works, they can come back to the thread, thank the human who helped and change the title of the thread to "*****************: SOLVED..thanks"

Registered users cannot change thread titles in vB 2. That operation is only permitted by moderators and custom super users.

oh well...was a thought.....

you know, Brad, you just opened the door to many people at AI to start whinning that they want to be CSU's.... g

They'll be denied just like if people were to start asking to be mods and admins. They can whine all they want. Whining gets you nothing. In fact, whining probably puts you LOWER on the priority list.
[quote]Originally posted by thuh Freak:

Yes it is...would do you some good as well.

My question isn't why you posted that, but why Registered Users cannot edit the title of their threads in vB...

What is the point of that? There haven't really been any problems with users changing the titles of their threads in my memory.

If it is just one incident...well so be it. Most people put the ability to change titles of threads to a good use, i.e. fixing typos or making the title more relevant to the topic.

Then you might have the occasional idiot who changes the name of a long-lived thread and then no one can find it. Maybe these people should loose thread-title-editing ability.

i think brad is saying that in UBB the orginal poster can change the title (like we can now)....but in vB that ability is limited to mods and special users only by the software, not by the mods......g

I sincerely doubt vB wouldn't let you change that, it seems to be so flexible in every other way.

they chose not to let user A change his thread title. Only mods and superusers are going to do that.
ok, i can understand....some people were changing the titles of threads (sometimes many many times) and it can get confusing.....can they (the mods) allow title changes by the thread starter in GB only?? g

ah.

I think that vB is that flexible, but it looks like they just chose the thing with the "SuperUser" ...
Yea and I can see why if people are being idiots and change their thread titles constantly.
[quote]Originally posted by Defiant:

That would give moderator status, with the ability to move, rename, and delete anything at will.

IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.
So superusers have the abilities of moderators or something?

I'm a little lost, here.
How about you just forget the idea of a "super user"?

That is actually a term I just coined to describe a feature that doesn't really have a name other than "custom user group that has different permissions than the standard registered user". That title just doesn't roll off the tongue; thus, I call it a super user.

We will NOT be making custom user groups unless there is some really strange and drastic change that I can't even imagine about how we operate the forums.

Maybe you shouldn't have mentioned it at all then...just should have said 'moderators.'

I wanted clarification because people were using it and I didn't know exactly what the term entitled in vB.
