New Laptop model on October 15th. - Page 2

Your misinterpreting my reasoning. Dual processors are a whole different kinda party (FOABH talk). I will bet anyone on this board money that dual processor laptops in the same form factor they are in now will not appear in the next year or 2, if at all.
Something of note...you guys are all talking about the Powebook and have missed something. CompUSA has stopped listing the low end iBook on their website. When CompUSA discontinues an Apple product, it's because they know something.

I really, really, really hope there are new PowerBook G4s soon. I beg. I plead. Just give me a damn new model to buy! For crying out loud, Apple. You're torturing me. Stop the misery. Ease the pa........okay I think you get my point.

Actually all the threads i've seen him post that pic, the thread was very deserving of it. And there are few rednecks in miami, if any. True there are alot of rednecks in Florida (it being the south and all) miami seems to be more of a mix of many many differnt nationalities and backgrounds (latino probably being the pradomenent).

We're gonna get a speed bumped PowerBook G4 before any new form factor, so chill fellas! Faster processors and maybe the DVD-RW this go-round.

Once again, my friend in Cupertino said the faster PowerBooks were an outside possibility for this past MWNY, and certainly Steve wanted it, but there was a shortage of the faster processors (haven't we all gotten sick of hearing that one?) and some other issues that pushed the timing way back. But once upon a time, the game plan was for faster PBs this past July. He also says there is another form factor in the works but only in the advanced planning stages, and no clear consensus on replacing the Ti Book or introducing another model. If a new PB is introduced along side the Ti then it might well be the end of the iBook, or even a new iBook altogether. Isn't it about time for a new iBook form factor? How long did we have the clam-shell design before the white iBooks came along?

not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but J&R is offering the PB 667 (M8591LL) for $100 off ($2399).

it's not advertised (i'm sure this is due to apple's strict reseller rules), but if you give them your email address, they'll send you a link to a page that offers it at the discount...

<a href="http://www.jandr.com/JRProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=&Pr oduct_Id=3167241&source=D" target="_blank">Cheaper PB G4</a>

oh yeah, and the 800MHz for $3099 <a href="http://www.jandr.com/JRProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=&Pr oduct_Id=3167242&source=D" target="_blank">here...</a>

While I do find most of this thread to be a joke my campus store told me to hold off for two weeks on my iBook, that they would be taking another $100 off the price and throwing in AppleCare for free! So I did.

1) The sales clerk is not making comission.
2) On campus, they're just computer geeks making minimum wage selling stuff they're interested in. They like to spout off on their 'insider' knowledge just like everyone else. Mostly it's just the rumor mill at work though.

And look how much heat those revision b 677 mzh powerbooks produced. The fan is on almost constantly and I have a 550 mzh model. Maybe the supposed "dual labtops" have a xserve fan built in! That would keep them cool.
And maybe instead of harddrives in the front like the xserve they could have four batteries.

perhaps the powerbooks will use a smaller process and come from that plant belonging to a partner of Moto that they signed a deal with. Thus they could be lower-power chips.

Strange : same config, now with the new 5400rpm 40 Gigs, and I rarely get the fan kicking in (10.1.2 improved things also, it seems), except when I plug an external display.
Where do you work ? Are you using your TiBook on you bed or what : are the air vents free or the TiBook rear is close to a wall/anyhting preventing a good cooling of the case.

I can't sell it and upgrade in 3 weeks... can I?

3 weeks? Been there, done that.

I am going to be VERY surprised if we don't get a PowerBook update this month. I'll be shocked.

I also think the dual processor thing is crazy. No wonder there is utter disappointment in here after Macworld Expos... you go in with expectations like that and you guarantee yourself to be let down.

Of course I'd love to be proven wrong, and have a dual GHz PowerBook with advanced cooling technology so the fan doesn't come on any more often than it does now... but those are called dreams, kids.

PowerBook update this month, iBook update at MWSF - that's my 2 cents.

The only possibility which fits both scenarios would be a powerbook with an MPEG encoder built-in. That would be useful for DVD burning.

What I think we'll get is a 1Ghz Powerbook with ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 and maybe built-in Bluetooth.

I don't think that will make upgrade unless it has the rumoured Superdrives too.

Why would a dual TiBook be so unlikely? With duals power management could switch processors back and forth to save on battery use as well as solve heat build up problems. Additionally, the greater surface area of two processors would make heat dissipation easier to deal with.

Not true. The week before the LCD iMac came out (and before the Time Canada leak), I had sales rep (higher up in the food chain) confirm that a new iMac was definitely coming out. They didn't say it, rather I asked them a pointed question, and as you know, body language makes up a good portion of communication. This person said one thing, but their body language conveyed the truth. Kind of like the old saying "Your lips say no, but your eyes say yes."

There have been rumors about dual processor PowerBooks for over a year. I would imagine that if there were prototypes, engineers must surely have been studying the ways to keep them cool; useable. Maybe, for what it's worth, they've unlocked the engineering secrets to making a dual-processor PowerBook not only a reality, but feasible.

Well appartently they didn't have any problem getting enough 7455's for Dual GHz machines off the fab's. Not to mention, enough left over for sonnet and newer tech, etc to start making upgrades....

I find it funny that so many of you guys believe that we will actually see a dual PowerBook. The battery consumption would be enormous and the heat..OUCH!!!1 It is possible to have one processor turned off except when plugged into the wall, but seriously would this halfway defeat the point of having a dual. I mean if you can't use it on the go why put in into a laptop????? But then again you never know what apple will do...
\tLook for new powerbooks this month and new PowerMacs at MWSF.

with all the hoohah about dual cpu powerbooks
i hereby predict that apple will not release
a dual cpu pb

instead........

they will release a quad pb

thats right 4 cpu's ...each cpu in one corner
with the top protuding out the bottom so it
acts as feet & heatsink....

any takers ?
First of all, if you look at the original "dual" post, the sales rep changed the topic to PowerMacs, and how the dual lineup was an attempt to make up for the slow G4 speeds.

But of course duals processor Powerbooks are possible, for many reasons. To begin with, cooling solutions are all over the place
post #75 of 445
Actually, the only thing I think that is less likely than getting dual proc Pb's is getting a postcard when it happens.
I will send one out to the first person willing to take me up on the bet though...

Starting to wonder if Apple should stick with IBM for all it's chips. The G3 with SIMD unit, nice speeds and new bus for iMac and portables and the GPUL for the towers.

This PowerPC G3 is great! with 512k L2 cache and low power consumption design, it is the ultimate CPU for laptops! I hope Apple should use this new G3 chip for upcoming iBooks! IMO, the G3 chip is the perfect fit for the iBook market segment, the iBook users use it for writing reports, presentations, suffering internet and occasionally doing the presentations. With MacOS X.2, a G3 laptop is not slow, I have a ice-iBook 500/320 MB ram, the performance is acceptable while iCal is somehow sluggish, but the overall performance is good. If Apple do use this chip, whoa~ 512k L2 cache, it should retain all the advantages of the current iBook and push the performance to another new high!

Well, by the time, who's gonna buy G4 powerbook? Hmmmm.....by the way, the PIII/M is actually faster than P4/M in lots of tests except these apps. tinkered for sse2, this is just the bloody example of last generation CPU kicking the latest generation CPU's ass.
