That's just unfounded speculation - the reason could well be that Panther development was running late and they wanted to showcase that. It's been announced that all attendees will get a preview copy of Panther.

I know you think you're right, and your teachers may agree, but there's nothing wrong with the way I phrased that question.

He plays football well.
He is a good footballer.
He is a bad sport.
He plays guitar well.
He is a bad guitarist.
He plays guitar, badly.
Your English is pretty good.
You speak good English.
You speak English well.
Your English usage is poor.
You speak English poorly
You don't speak English very well.
Your English is fairly bad.
You speak English badly.

In English there are many ways to say the same thing. Get used to it. Bad is an antonym of good (actually given as definition example in Oxford dictionary).

Oxford examples of use: "works badly", "wants it badly", "was badly defeated".

Thank you and good night.

Really? Perhaps in percentage terms Apple sells more in Japan, but in absolute numbers there are more Mac sales in Europe. the UK alone is the third biggest market for Apple, and I don't think it's that far behind Japan.

If I could move anywhere in the world I would move to Berlin. Inexpensive housing, great culture and fun people. The bars and clubs there are great.

Live, and FREE, via Quicktime? I just can't remember any; maybe before (iMac intro) or after (all, via ADC/DVD), but not live. Maybe I am popping that blue pill onlooker eluded to.

I think, going back a few years - say around '99, yes, live. But it could be that I just can't remember that far back.

<hysterica rant>

This is beginning to get really silly. I'm mean come on! Really now. I met some German guy and he knows about the 970.

BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!!

The Fairy F-ing Godmother told me that the 970 will smoke all the P4s and to expect them in late August. Beat that source!

</hysterical rant>

<hired mob muscle mode>

Ok heres the deal. I'll hang outside Apple HQ in Cupertino and jack some techie looking guy as he leaves Steve's secret dungeon on furlough. God knows the poor sap will be blinded by the sun anyway, probably be all couped up in Steve-O's skunk works and such. I'll beat some answers out of him. We'll find out how the 970 thing is going to go down. How does that sound? Just remember, you'd be owing me a favor.

My goodness. I thought you folks distinguished between 'proper' and 'technically correct'. Be careful, settling for technically correct is a slippery slope - before you know it you'll devolve from queues to lines to rampant mindless hordes, just like Americans. There's a debate in the US now that 'nuk-u-ler' is a proper pronunciation of 'nuk-le-ar', thanks to our dear idiot president.

Are you sure you want PM Blair out there saying 'nuk-u-ler'? Or should we agree that 'poorly' is worth the fight?

Thank you and good night.

I think the bug up your rectum made you misunderstand the point of my post. I wasn't correcting your English - that is not mine to do. I was pointing out the fact that, despite English being their first (and often only) language, many native English speakers don't have the first clue as to the grammar and correct usage of that language. Consequently it can be said of such people that they don't actually have a language at all - unless you wish to count pidgin (or Tok Tok).

Thus endeth this part of the thread. We return you now to your scheduled programming.

Not demented, just mistaken.

I was at the WWDC last year, and there was no webcast.

I had to type the play-by-play over the auditorium's Airport network onto DSLR's Mac forum for my friends. MacCentral and other sites do the same in real-time.

English is a developing language with many dialects and conventions. If Oxford doesn't establish what is "proper" and "correct" then I don't know what does.

That doesn't mean that we have to accept everything we see written as "English". My favourite of the moment is the outright stupid use of "headed".

I don't think the 970 will be anounced at WWDC or on any event near june 23th.

Thinksecret writes:

"Apple to ship minor Power Mac technical update
By Nick dePlume, Publisher and Editor in Chief

May 15, 2003 - Sources said that Apple will soon release a minor technical update to its Power Mac line.

The update, known internally as project P58C, is not expected to include new features or bumps to processor speed or hard drive size. Most likely, the specifications of the models will remain unchanged.

Instead, P58C will include minor internal technical changes, sources said, in a not uncommon practice for Apple. The tweaks are reportedly intended to provide further compatibility with Panther, the next major update to Mac OS X. However, the exact nature of the changes is unknown.

Apple is set to finalize P58C in the next week or so, and will then quietly begin shipping the updated models to the retail channel. On the outside, P58C will probably be indistinguishable from the current Power Mac, aside from a new product number.

This Power Mac update could be the last change to the product line before Apple releases its next major update, featuring the PowerPC 970 chip. Think Secret has acquired a variety of information about both the chip and the new Power Macs, and is in the process of confirming the details; If you have information to add please email us or use our anonymous email form."

Apple would not do this while they want to unleash the 970 just weeks after this.

So, me thinks...970 around september or later and a sneak preview of the 970 @ WWDC behind closed doors.
Yes they would! It's an extremely minor update.
It's called wanting to have the best product you can. Good companies will continue to improve a produect even if they know it will shortly be gone.

If true, the reason for this minor tweak to the PowerMac isn't obvious to me. One possibility is a firmware upgrade for Panther, and Apple is simply including it as soon as it is ready. Those who buy some of the last G4 PowerMacs will have less to complain about. Those who bought earlier will have to update their firmware for Panther. But that is only one possibility.

I don't think we can draw a conclusion about when the 970 PowerMacs will be introduced from this Thinksecret article. Introduction could still be at WWDC, with shipment immediately or within 30 days. Since Steve is not doing a keynote at Macworld in July, Apple will likely not introduce it then. So we are left with WWDC or a special event in the August / September time frame. We take our pick.

I do believe the 2000 WWDC keynote was broadcast via satellite/TechTV. Not sure about QuickTIme. I was there.

Apple has been videoing entire WWDCs for a while now, so the presence of a camera crew is not definitive. (They sell the classes to developers on DVD and via streaming from the ADC site).

According to the author of the report (Nick dePlume) there is no reason to think this update has anything to do with the PPC970's impending release.

Quote:
Our report is accurate, but don't read too much into this -- the 970 is still on track, and there's little connection between it and P58C, other than that this could be the last Power Mac update before the 970. If you're waiting for the 970 and you think this is a good thing, you're probably right.

It's worth reiterating that P58C is a minor, invisible, technical update. It will not revert to the QuickSilver casing (that's simply an illustrative picture). It won't contain the 970. While we're told that some updates are related to Panther, that certainly doesn't mean that pre-May Power Macs won't support 10.3.

Finally, Think Secret isn't hard up for 970 info, but there are several points we're still confirming. We'd like to provide as full a picture we can with our first report, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me.

Excellent! You bring the muscle, I'll bring the alcohol and hard drugs. After you beat the sh!t outta him, I'll get him loaded 'til he develops a bad case of verbal diarrhea.

We'll get him talking until he's unleashed everything from exact PPC 970 tower specs to repressed childhood memories. By the time we're done with him, he'll tell us how many times his dad sodomized him as a child.

A guy in the Powerbook forum has just posted a message saying that he has been invited to the German event on the 23rd.

He has noted that it is being quoted as a 'Panther Launch', but that Panther will not be the only announcement...

He has promised to keep everyone informed.

The translation on Macrumors hides the most exciting sentence:
"Es erwarten Sie Neuigkeiten, die alle ihre bisherigen Erwartungen an Geschwindigkeit ├╝bertreffen werden" (emphasis added)

That reads: "Awaiting you are announcements that will exceed all your previous expectations about speed."

Interesting.

[edit: corrected punctuation]
