gollum is a great name...think about what happened to smeagul...he was a relatively normal guy until he got his hands on the ring....after seeing/using it it started to bend his will/thoughts to its own...it became such an overpowering force that its powers ripped away his very personality until he became a simple pathetic slave to its wishes.....
sounds good for a new powermac, no?....power that will make you lose yourself..LOL!

Anyway... Maybe the PM 970's will only run 10.3b+.. Ever thought of that? Maybe Gollum is the name for this WWDC-build of 10.3... After all, motherboard support for all those things rumored to be in it, its quite a lot for a 10.2.x update..

Unless I see the actual letter from the 'Fedayeen Steve', and see the exact wording, I really don't believe it.

It is the easiest thing to raise your kudos by taking an article down 'at Apple's request'...

Lets see the letter!!

I doubt MacRumors would do that. Especially since it wasn't their story anyway - how could it improve their rep when it wasn't their story?

Why isn't it off AI? I can think of two reasons:
1. They can't find anyone running the site.
2. They know noone reads the AI front page.

Umm AI was the only that said that they were in fact going to be called POWERMAC G5 and would in fact be at WWDC.

Eveyrone else said powerpc 970 was going to be used but did not say G5 from what i remember

Oh....they were the first to pen the 'G5' moinker. It all becomes clear now...

Seriously though, it doesn't really matter if they were right about the 'G5' name. Hell, two years ago, the Reg said the 'G5' was coming.

Sure, it would be great to see AI come through with a rumor like this, but my point is that Appleinsider was not the first to rumor the WWDC date. That's all the AI article is at this point. A rumor. It's been rumored long before the AI article. Macbidoobie also said it would be previewed/released at WWDC.

[edit: Like I said, I'd love to see AI come back into the rumors community. And with a scoop like the 'Smeagol' name, it's well on its way. I'm not trying to be 'anti-AI' if that's what you are thinking. I'd just like to give credit where credit's due. Kudos to AI for the 'Smeagol' thing. I'm not sure what legal right apple has to force a news site to take an article off. If the site had pictures or specs on the product that would be different. The article on AI's page doesn't seem to reveal enough for apple legal to have a legal reason to have them pull the article.

Way back in the day. Apple legal requested many of AIs articles pulled.

I remember there was a whole series of Adobe legal pulls, and then later Apple Legal pulls. This was way before the slaptech takeover.

The G5 is Motorola. The past. Apple marketing may want to call the 970 the 'G5' but it isn't.

The G3 as we know it is made by IBM - and I don't think Motorola has ever formally used "G5" as a name for one of their chips. They've just been the 8000-series processors, or the Book-E processors, or something similar.

Anyways, why not let this be an opportunity to give "G5" a good name?
