I just read a white paper on HT. It is more flexible than I remember and can support fairly long connections (> 0.5 meters) which can be across connectors and cables.

I (foolishly) raised this question in the late and unlamented Dapper Dan thread, so I'll raise it again, having learnt the error of my ways.

Here 'tis: Would the best way of exploiting these characteristics of HT be to offer an HT-based expansion chassis for that small but vocal and cashed-up minority who want 6 or more PCI slots, etc. etc.? It seems almost certain that Apple will release a video workstation some time -- possibly some time soon. This could be achieved by creating an expensive, specialised box just for this purpose, or it could presumably be achieved by adding an expansion chassis to the fastest tower.

If so, then it seems to me that it would make very little sense to build specialised workstations, instead of simply leveraging the existing line of towers. Am I missing something?

Programmer said it support connections superior to 0,5 meter, but does it support a one meter connection (with a 0,5 meter cable you will have to put the external chassis very close to the tower.

The last generation of G4 has four PCI slots : it's sufficiant for most users, considering that the Mac, have built in audio, firewire, usb, airport connector in it.
Since the B&W G3, there is more and more space avalaible in the chassis : there is no reason that we see the reverse.
Personally if i have a wish for the case, it will be the avalaibility of a third 5 1/4 bay.

Sorry, these are not 970's. Also I wouldn't expect 970's until around 1Q 2004.

New hardware, yes.
New 970 Power Macs, no.
Updated *2.0* Power Macs?... perhaps

CONFIR....?

I'll have to disagree. The 970 at he latest will be out by the fall.

970'S will be released and orders taken from the 23rd June. I don't know how many product ranges are likely to recieve the new processors, but you will be able to order machines from the 23rd.

What if Apple only has a limited number of 970 machines at the moment and sells them to developers only for now. Then in a month or two they have enough produced to sell to the general public. It would be a first.

Hell just GIVE them to the developers. The increase in registrations for next year's WWDC would more than recoup the costs. Might even draw some non-traditional Mac developers.

Well you got past the hard part, you've cracked the outer box. It's over for you now if they catch you, so you may as well go all the way. Rip those suckers open and tell us what's inside!!!

And what is this Power Mac 2.0? Do you mean the P58C Powermacs? Maybe Steve will demo the P58C for an hour and hope it's enough to tide developers over until January '04.

or in the 3-5% mac community.

Salted... yes please

I thought they had smaller boxes inside but they seem to just be one box, they MUST be new PMs, nothing else would fit into these boxes. they have the flap handles on the side too.

sorry for being so schitzo I am having to sneak peeks at these and am hanging around WAY too much and should stay away now.

No, not P58C, these must be new PMs as the box is not the same size as the MDD Macs.
I thoughty the top 2 flaps (on a standard PM box) was a seperation between 2 boxes, but these are laying on thier side (so it seems) unless these open from the side? doubt it.
damn it. Take a photo of the palette and retouch any identifying numbers or codes and post the sucker.

Otherwise... it's all too vague. Could be oversized LCD monitors for all we can tell.

I can't go back now, but I Just (today) got a Panasonic GU87 and will learn to use the camera today

There are only around 6 of these, the rest are smaller DLD boxes as I said before. These must be the display units these are not printed boxes, just brown so even a picture would not be impressive but I will try.

It would suck to have these and not be able to sell them! This has happened before though. And I imagine they could take pre orders to be fulfiled in a week or two.
this is getting instesting, finally pictures of.... something, I'm so desperate for pictures I don't care if there just brown boxes

remember that someone (moki?) said that new machines would use the fancy audio interface.

X-Stations don't need fancy sound. Or even any sound, really, for that matter.

and releasing 3d workstations at WWDC would be kinda inappropriate.

Those should debut at Siggraph!

I got a pic, can someone host it?
Its just the boxes but you can see the size I think..

They have foam that squeaks when I pressed the sides, so I know its not smaller boxes inside!

Not to interrupt the pictures of brown boxes love fest...

AtAT has reversed its position and now expects G5s on Monday with immediate availability.

"No, what we meant to imply is that while it's all still just hearsay at this point, the say we're hearing hints strongly at a whiz-bang Power Mac G5 intro this Monday, with immediate availability right after the keynote. And while we're trying desperately not to get our hopes up until we see something at least vaguely resembling evidence, we have to admit, we're starting to get a little antsy. Must... control.... enthusiasm... Must... think... underwhelming... thoughts..."
Attention Internet Users!

"it's" contraction of "it is"
"its" possessive form of the pronoun "it".

It's shameful how grammar on the Internet is losing its accuracy.

Alright, listen up! If these are demo boxes then it doesn't matter, they've got to be opened sometime. No customer equals nobody to complain about an opened box. Save yourself work later and open one now.

1. Tear open that freakin' box already! WTF are you waiting for?

2. Unpack your shiny new camera and nail some photos of whatever lurks inside that box.

3. Touch up the photos to remove incriminating evidence and upload them to AI.

4. Put box back together, tape it up like it was before, and restack the boxes with incriminating box underneath.

Remember, you don't want to be a retail grunt your whole life. If they can you then it's actually the best thing that could happen.

Well yes, you couldn't put the expansion chassis on the other side of the room; nor would you want to in all probability. Besides, it would certainly be more elegant if there were no visible cables snaking all over the place. Perhaps the expansion chassis could be designed to clip onto the tower in some way. Various people have already explored similar ideas in FH: Barto springs to mind here.

As for your wanting a 3rd bay, well, all this and more could be yours with the right expansion kit....

Send any untouched photos to me at brad@appleinsider.com and I will take care of things for you. I can host the image here at AppleInsider without any risk to you.

If you want anything censored out from the photos, I'll gladly (and preferably, to aid in proving the validity of the photos) take care of that myself. Just add any relevant details to the message of the e-mail. I will resend any retouched images to you before publishing to verify that they are satisfactory.

I want to know what's coming as much as the next guy, but we ought to be careful about egging someone on to disobey explicit instructions from Apple, his or her employer, or both.

The big boys with the NDAs and industry contacts can take care of themselves: they know where the line is and can skirt it, or even go slightly slightly across it, with ambiguous hints, etc. They know the risks and can act (and defend themselves) accordingly.

This guy strikes me as pretty low in the food chain (if it's not a stunt). Maybe an Apple Store employee. I'd hate to see someone get fired because they were trying to impress the crowd on a rumors BB.

There is such as thing as aiding and abetting appropriation of trade secrets, copyright violations, etc. I suspect that Apple is unlikely to spend the money to do more than send cease-and-desist letters, but, like RIAA, if they wanted to they could make an example of some poor college students who don't have the money to defend themselves.

All it takes is a lawsuit entitled "Apple v. John Does 1-10" and a few 3rd-party subpoenas to some ISP and hosting companies, to effectively and quickly find out who's doing what.

This is a low probability scenario, but "low probability" is still greater than zero.

Spoiling Steve's surprise is not worth getting someone fired, IMHO.

(Yes, I'm a lawyer; No, I don't work for Apple).

Lighten up, man. As if the guy's gonna read my post and obediantly follow my suggestions. I can just see him printing it out and following each step.

Thanks for the compliment, however. Nobody ever told me before that my writing is so powerful and suggestive. I'm going to go write a letter to my bank manager telling her to "accidently" deposit a cool million into my savings account. My writing and it's powers of persuasion will completely rob her of freewill, she will obey me fully.

Does your camera have an "uncompressed" or "tiff" mode setting, If you can take a picture in that setting I can tell you how to convert it to "PNG" so that it can be posted artifact free.

(let me know the model of Digicam if you need help)

Me, lighten up? I'm not the one suggesting someone crack open the boxes and take pictures just because I can't stand not knowing for six days.

Endlessly obsessing over moki's tea leaves is one thing. But suggesting someone rip open the boxes early is just plain uncool.

Did you have sex before or after marriage? Or did you 6 days before your wedding night think... Why wait?
What would you do? This is a practical matter for me, not a theoretical one.

Sunday night my company was burglarized and eight G-4 Macs and one Intergraph workstation was taken. It appears to be a professional job.

Our entire prepress, scanning, and design department was decimated. Our large format digital printing production was stopped and 34 people had little to do.

Monday we bought four 1.4 dual processor units. My MIS guy wanted to get eight, but I suggested we beg and borrow the remaining four G-4s and hold out for the June 23 anouncement. Any G4 purchase made today would be end of life equipment and we would have eight of them.

In our team meeting on the subject there was a lot of disagreement. One savvy Mac head suggested we be careful in betting on a combination of new, untested hardware and software even if the G5 did ship at the Monday announcement.

Right now I am sticking with my four and four plan. Any opinions?

I think your four and four plan is a good idea, as long as it does not result in signficant loss of revenue due to loss of productive work hours. If you can beg or borrow the second four machines and wait a week, then you can always decide and still buy four old or four new. But it does no good to have people not working.
