[Moved to CH]: Next PowerBook??

<img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> Hmmm....now since they've upgraded the titaniums, I think we can safely assume that they won't be making any changes to it in January. Grrrrr.......I know they're really nice right now, but they could use a little more umf. I'm waiting for the next revision. Do you guys think it won't come out until Summer or later??? Because, I really want it to be released before I go to college in the fall. I was just hoping that 2003 would be different and just maybe Apple would change it's habbits and make a ton of hardware upgrades. *Sigh* Oh well, we can only hope for the best.....

Man if you are not happy with this upgrade then you are definately hard to please. I thought I was hard to please but you must be guiding multiple inbound nuclear missles or something crazy. What exactly do you mean by more "umf"? The current Powerbook is as cutting edge as it has ever been, it has all top of the line components, that are as good as any laptop in the world has. What would you actually want that is physically possible.

I guess it does not matter because they will DEFINATELY update the Powerbook again before you go to school next August. I know everyone always wants the best but if the current powerbook cant meet your needs you may want to consider a PowerMac, or what your needs actually require (likely a $999 iMac).

Agreed. If this upgrade really doesn't impress you(!), there'll likely be another one in May/June. The 'Books have been updated on a more-or-less six month cycle for the last couple of years.

I suppose it depends on whether or not you want to have a laptop for the next six months.

You're crazy if it doesn't impress you. The high end Power Book is better than even high end PC notebooks and even cheaper than some. One of these notebooks would likely last you all through college and beyond. You can do pretty much anything with it. What are you studying that needs so much power? I think that the restraint on some people isn't the power of their machines (or lack-there-of) but themselves. If this notebook isn't good enough for you, then you need to be looking elsewhere. Either a Power Mac G4, as stated above, or a PC company. I highly doubt you'll find anything better in this class and at this price range.

You're nuts. I love my Ti800 because it has so much 'oomph.' The 1GHz obviously only has more.

Look, why don't you come right out and say it: you're one of these techno geeks who lives in a world completely disconnected from practical application. You have no conception of what is actually needed, how people actually use computers, and what you really need. To you, the only satisfactory product is that one that hasn't yet come out, and when it does, you want the next thing.

Remember folks, some people want to use their laptops for more then just surfing, WP, e-mail, and maybe a little photoshop or iMovie.

You used to be able to buy Apple laptops that were about 75% as powerful as the top tower. Nowadays it seems that the powerbooks top out at less then 40% of the computing power of the dual towers.

It is not surprising that not everyone is blown away but the update.

Personally, I'm going to skip this update and hope that Apple will come out with a much more powerful model next year.

I was about to defend you Res, because I thought you might have been talking style! I really would like something more beautiful, utilitarian, but not boxy like the TiBooks have beenalso with sturdier paint, but I felt these upgrades from yesterday really gave me all I will need in power. I use Japanese and English interchangeably on my Cubes and my Firewire PowerBook G3, iMac15! and iBook500 and see this new PB as a definite improvement over them all AND it is capable of driving my Cinema display. Enough for me for now

I thought this was a thread about PowerBooks, not iBooks?

How can PowerBooks not be used with FCP, DVD Studio Pro, intensive work in graphics apps, Logic, etc.?

Funny things like that happen when desktop chips start sucking down lots of power. The same thing happened in the PC world, except for freak examples like the 10 pound "luggable desktop" from Alienware.

Why would this update be a let-down, when PowerBooks have been significantly behind the towers for years now?

I'm going to guess that you're in for perennial disappointment: If the PowerBook gets one 970, the towers will probably get two.

There is a price to be paid for slimming a workstation down to 5 pounds, and expecting it to run quietly for hours without being plugged in...

I didn't say the update didn't impress me...and no I'm definitely not a huge "tech" person. It's just that one thing that really bothers me about the titaniums is how hot the suckers get. I had a friend that let me mess around with it for awhile. And it didn't take long before it started heating up immensly.

There's also the issue of the next generation of graphics cards. They may be released during the beginning of next year which would be very nice.

The titanium itself with the 1 GHz G4 is very cool and unique alone, but there are just a couple factors that would make it a better labtop.

If they fixed the heat problem, I'd probably buy it in a heartbeat. But, we'll see what the next updates bring....

And I will definitely buy the next version of them no matter what they are, because I'm blown away by a 500MHz G4's speed!

You're all crazy, the latest upgrade to the Powerbook line is perfect. Quit your bitchin and go buy one.. if I hadn't tapped my bank account already it'd be a done deal purchase. Nice speed increase, added dvd-r drive, I mean c'mon.. anything else would be uncivilized

It took Apple three revisions to nail the TiBook's internal design. If your friend has one of the earlier ones (especially if it's the first 667MHz TiBook) it's a lot hotter than the subsequent designs. The 667/800 series had better cooling, and the new TiBooks have the best cooling apparatus of any so far.

Definitely give it a look.

Incidentally, over at the MacNN forums, seanyepez is reporting that the new TiBooks have a different, more "baked on" paint. Time will tell if it's better, but at least it looks like Apple attempted a solution to that problem.

And since this thread no longer has anything to do with Future Hardware, I'm going to move it to Current Hardware.
