Apple leaks G5 specs - Page 8

apple will be on a ****ing roll...

iPods...home run
iTMS...home run
new PM...freakin home run

funny, suddenly the portables are the ones behind...when, so recently, they were the glue holding apple at the forefront...

i expect PB and iBooks to see improvements fast, especially if apple sees sales of PM that are in the insane ball park

iBook goes G4 or g3 gobi
PB gets the 1.2 and 1.4 970 chips
iMac gets 1.2 and 1.4 970 chips too??

suddenly apple has 90% market share...ha

Confirmed, as of 1:56 AM: CNET reports that Akamai was hacked at 10:38 PM; Akamai rep states they will "stop at nothing" to find and punish the perpetrator.

The cease and desist order must have gone out already. MacRumors report of this now has had the screenshot removed and the report itself severely edited.

This is definately the real deal and Apple probably did it on purpose just to make the entire Mac faithful splooge themselves for the next few days to come...Steve's stock goes up, so does ours and the world is a better place!

yes
i just went to MACRUMOURS and it was removed.
now we all know that certain "other" rumour sites (spymac) have engaged in this deception to make their site seem more authentic.
but i dont think MACRUMOURS would do such a thing and if that is true then the posted specs are REAL!!!!!!!!!!!

YES THERE IS A GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apple historically was well ahead of wintel on max RAM. HP just talked about an Opteron machine with max 1GB RAM. It's a 64 bit chip you wankers! >4GB RAM is half the point!

Optical audio has been mentioned by moki, so take it as confirmed.

I guess that confirms it's likely to be genuine. A hacked Akamai image or made up informational could have no legal standing for infringement of Apple's proprietary information.

Only rumor left now:

What will it look like and when will it be available?
I would also have to say that the imacs look fairly weak now, at least at current prices (assuming these babies don't start at 2k). Either they get a drastic price cut, or they get bumped to the MDD processor specs soon.

plus there is no real downside to this release...it makes us happy, jumps apples stock and yet still keeps keen interest in WWDC since we haven't see the tower yet, haven't seen it work nor its speed number and we haven't seen the monitors that will go with it...win win for apple, win win for us...

Exactly!

They don't have a leg to stand on. They didn't send a cease and desist I bet. I bet they just asked Arn to take it down. Maybe they will give him a break later on for his cooperation.

With this "error" you can be sure that all the media will take attention of the WWDC.

We have the specs but don't have the case.

I am not so sure that it is an error ...

You've got to be kidding. Steve Jobs orders a graphic called "powermac.gif" for the G4 to be replaced with a graphic called" powermac.gif' with the G5 specs at the online Apple Store on Friday midnight.... to build a little extra attention over the weekend? Why would this kind of attention ("Apple inadvertently leaks G5 specs" kind of attenion) before Monday be better than announcing the G5 on Monday, w/o leak?

C'mon. Think it through. This was a mistake, and certain people at Apple are undoubtedly in a complete panic / spin cycle right now.

It's really hopeless to try to contain it, though. You can try to hold down pictures for a time, but not ten lines of information.

Callin' out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer's here and the time is right
For dancing in the streets
They're dancing in Chicago
Down in New Orleans
In New York City, dancing in the street

All we need is music, sweet music (sweet music)
There'll be music everywhere (everywhere)
There'll be swinging, swaying and records playing
And dancing in the streets

Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So come on, every guy grab a girl
Everywhere around the world
There'll be dancing
They're dancing in the street

This is an invitation across the nation
A chance for folks to meet
There'll be laughing and singing and music swinging
Dancing in the streets

Philadelphia, PA (dancing in the street)
Baltimore and DC now (dancing in the street)
Yeah don't forget the Motor City (dancing in the street)

All we need is music, sweet music (sweet music)
There'll be music everywhere (everywhere)
There'll be swinging, swaying and records playing
And dancing in the street

Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So come on, every guy grab a girl
Everywhere around the world
There'll be dancing (dancing in the street)
They're dancing in the streets (dancing in the street)

Ooh

Dancing in the street

Ooh

Dancing in the street

All we need is music, sweet music (sweet music)
There'll be music everywhere (everywhere)
There'll be swinging, swaying and records playing
And dancing in the street

Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So come on, every guy grab a girl
Everywhere around the world
There'll be dancing (dancing in the street)
They're dancing in the streets (dancing in the street)

We're down in LA everyday, we're dancing in the street
Let's form a big strong line, get in time
We're dancing in the street
Across the ocean blue, me and you
We're dancing in the street

still it is great news moki, and i can't really see why apple would be too awful pissed by this (other than the fact that apple hates mistakes and leaks)...it would be best if apple just rides out the storm, keeps quiet till monday, hopes a photo isn't leaked between now and then...and then SJ comes out, makes a joke or two (include the ugly photo of the G5 that made the rounds of rumor sites) and then wows us with the finished product..

The graphic itself is probably covered by Apple's copyright notice on the website as a whole.

The info contained in the graphic is a different story. Obviously, in order to be a trade secret, it has to be secret. And in order to sue for violation of a trade secret, a company typically must show that it took all reasonable measures to keep the information confidential.

Suing for disclosure of trade secrets, after accidentally posting the same information to your own website, well that's not a winning legal strategy.

OK; i doubt that Apple will ever do that. However i don't think that mistake is necessary bad for them.

The image itself would by copyrighted by them, so they can legitimately demand its removal, and possibly disallow quoting the exact text. But I don't think they have a valid action against a site that paraphrases the contents; facts aren't copyrightable, and its status as a trade secret is out the window. Regardless, it really doesn't matter what Apple Legal does, the horses are miles from the barn door by now.

So...if the G5 has optical out, to me that implies 5.1 and 7.1 sound. Does that in turn imply that Apple's DVD player is updated as well? Or did it always support surround sound, but never had an appropriate connection to send the sound through?

Oh, and in case if haven't said it already...
Wheee!!!

i really hope not! why inflate the prices of the whole line by at least $150?! in fact, it would be a nice change if apple let customers doing BTO opt out of optical drives. or at least give all options (down to a lowly 56x CD-ROM).

not that it really matters, we'll all be selling our cars/homes/wives to pay for these beasts. seriously, how can you _not_ get the dual 2GHz? I mean, the sweet spot had been in the "faster" spot for a while, but now, it almost doesn't matter what the prices are, the dual 2GHz is going to blow _everything_ else away!

It is almost believable. But now that I think about it, what if this were a hack? Everyone would be so disappointed. And that hacker..let's hope he doesn't run in to us!

news that an X-Serve hosted Secure site hosted on Akamai (also security freaks) was hacked would be bigger than the leaked specs, and more damaging to Apple.

the continuing existence of Hack-Proof Macs still acts to tweak the noses at MicroSoft.
WIRED has archived stories about the US ARMY running WebStar on OS 8 or 9 PowerMacs (because NT wasn't secure enough). IIRC, the Scandinavian "Hack the Mac, win $10,000 (USD or Kroner, or whatever)" Competition went unclaimed after open access to all comers... no technical break-ins (one social engineering manipulation of a receptionist got close).

Apple prides itself on default-secure installs that preset most suspicious ports to closed and err on the side of privacy and caution. this is unlike certain Redmond coders, whose default-installs are hideously insecure, leave ports open, and err often, both sacrificing your privacy, and exposing you to vulnerabilities.

each expect you to track down security patches as they emerge, but some systems are more secure than others

admitting they were hacked would be worse than stealing Steve's thunder
but Olympian fury might describe the flash of pink slip lightning in progress to those unfortunate (for them, not us) uploaders, formerly of AppleStoreWeb
