Better yet... why was anyone shopping for a powermac right about now anyway?

Heheh, I wonder what the apple phone reps think when taking orders for G4s monday morning before the keynote?

Why don't you call them up and ask?

Interestingly enough, the Apple online store still says the Power Mac G4s are available "same day" shipping. We know (or are fairly confident) that Apple will come out with new Power Macs Monday. Likewise, the online Apple Store also lists the PowerBook G4 15-inch Ti at "same day" shipping. Could we infer that the PowerBook may be updated too?

I think the leak was accidental. I mean they updated all of the store "buttons" when it happened. If it was intentional, don't you think we could have seen something else "teased" by now. Perhaps Apple might want to do something like this = take advantage of the opportunity. Keep your eyes peeled.

You know, there will be some poor bastard who simply doesn't follow things calling up Apple Monday morning (after saving for half a year for a top-end 1.42DP tower) and happily placing his order.

I've heard that it was accidental and that two people have been fired so far over the incident. (Said on one of the Mac mailings lists, for those who subscribe to the same one I do).

So, I have no reason to say it was anything besides an accident.

What bugs me about it, however, is the fact that only ONE image slipped out. If this was a mockup for the final page, how did only one graphic. One would think that in a page mockup, the three main images would all be in the same place.

Of course, if for whatever reason, perhaps that one image is the only one that matched the same name on the current page. The title graphic has "g4" in the name, but the product display doesn't.

In the end, I guess, not really wanting to take advantage of those under me, but if Apple is looking, I'm unemployed at the time, I'll gladly handle those images correctly for Apple next time.

Well, the only one I'm on is Think Secret's Infinity Loop List. You can get info about subscribing to it here.

But I don't find it to be a "great" source of rumors, just a rehash of what's on the boards with some discussion on it.

It was a gif image of typeface. A photo of the actual computer would mostly likely be a jpeg image. Each page contains many components which are separate.
Whatever the "mistake" was, it has not been refuted by Apple so it was accurate (but not necessarily complete however).
More info should pop up on Sunday night when a site like MacRumors has had a great track record of devulging new info the night before a keynote.

I wouldn't count on 2.5 GHz at launch but I certainly wouldn't bet against say 2.4 GHz in Q4 on the 130 nm process either. If I were to randomly extrapolate I'd look for the 90 nm chips around Q2 next year with the successor to the current design coming lets say about 2005. Of course I would never extrapolate.

My, oh my, this thread move swiftly. Skimmed the last 4+ pages since yesterday...

W= "When." Mois is arguing, as he has many times before, that the 970's/GPuL are coming a little later, even the "fast" machine (as opposed to "faster" and "fastest" which have already been reported as coming later). The one quote from way back when that he took issue with said one machine shipping now and the other two models shipping in 2-3 weeks. Way too soon. We won't see them for at least 4 weeks. W = "When."

Don't forget that Apple pushed back WWDC at least officially because of Panther. I'm sure they were gunning for some news about hardware, at least behind closed doors, but, if we Apple's claim about moving WWDC at face value, then its timing has little to do with the 970s.

PS the record around here for most posts was either Mercury Rising or the original "What are you listening to?" thread. They had around 1600 before the UBB forum used then pooped out.

The potential for leaks is increasing as we grow closer to Monday, yet other than the Apple screw up and the Panther screencaps...we have not heard/seen anything significantly new...anyone...someone...somebody tide me over!!!

obviously you weren't around for the thread about the teasers on apple's front page counting down to MWSF 02.

Although that is the only thread I've ever seen get to an even more obscene length even faster.

Mac Rumors says G5s only prototypes now, prices higher.

"Recent information suggests that the machines will not see full availability until at least August. In fact, machines are said to be in prototype form at this time. The new machines are also said to be at higher price points than the towers they are replacing."


I still think we'll be able to order them starting tomorrow as per the Apple Store leak. What's in the boxes then?

I'm not sure if it has been posted before (well, it is at future hardware, but no one seems to go over there anymore) but this concept site is wicked cool. Some sort of student project (not all videos work). At least there is some originality.

But this new workstation is probably a tower/rackmount configuration...

Might not be available from the Apple Store, might be something you need to get from the same distribution channel that handles Shake sales...

Pixar 'sells' RenderMan to Apple, Apple becomes software developer/distributor for RenderMan... Windows support drops with RMv12... Linux/Irix support drops with RMv13, soon afterwards RenderMan becomes default renderer for Maya v7...

Apple manages to wrestle A|w away from SGI, Maya Unlimited port to OS X top priority... Windows support drops with Maya v6... Linux/Irix support drops with Maya v7...

Shake drops Linux/Irix support with v4...

Hollywood is run totally on Mac OS X...

Hey, some of it could happen!

Personally, with the way Apple is going with Shake et al, this is the kind of thing I'd expect Apple to be doing. The 970 gives them a lot of latitude. From consumer to uber towers. They don't have to hide behind artificial product crippling anymore.

WWDC would be the venue to announce a 'high-end' creative strategy. Aquisition of something like Xsi or Maya would be a good thing. But I'd doubt SGI will let it go..?

If I'm to understand things correctly:-

The leaked specs are for a prototype.

There is a mystery computer no one knows about.

The prices will go up.


Could it be that there are indeed a Consumer and Pro version of said 970 desktop and that the iMac will be replaced?

Wasn't there rumoured to be a white and an aluminium version?

Can anyone quote Moki on this 'W' thing, I can't seem to find exactly what he said.

Seems to me that the most likely scenario is that Apple's new hardware strategy will be unveiled tomorrow.

It's hard to say for sure if they will announce the desktops tomorrow. Sure they screwed up and a .gif file made its way out early but it's uncertain just how early. I would imagine that who-ever was messing around with the pages was doing so very close to it going live but this is not necessarily the case.

I'm very sceptical about all the case designs I've seen so far. I would imagine that the design of the case is excellent, I haven't really seen an Apple design that ever sucked, even the nasty old dalmation and flower power imacs served the purpose that the design intended (more consumer sales).

I think that just knowing what hardware will be forthcoming and where Apple is taking us with Panther will be very exciting news indeed and this is what Moki is getting at.

I think the boxes that have been arriving have to be the new 15.4" PowerBooks. Perhaps the PowerBook will receive a G5 afterall? I am thinking that if the PB gets a G5 it will come into the fold at 1.2 GHz. Then towers will chime in at 1.6 GHz. Just conjecture.
