But gobbling up 64 bit instructions instead of 32 bit COULD help sustain enough processing throughput to make VPC run faster, process more data (64 bit) faster (G5).

Does it have an internal speaker? What's the startup chime like?

Still no, but thanks for trying.

Only one optical drive bay? Meh... disappointed. Looks nice though. I can't wait to see it in person. Nice specs and all, but only one drive? Seems like a huge step backwards to me.

EETimes G5 article

It says that each of the 2Ghz G5 dissipate 97 watts each!

Seems kind of high. Wonder if its a typo.

Edit: ah they caught it. Had an old "Choose your Power Mac G3" gif up.

Now that must have been an internal joke. 8) Why would they still have a Power Mac G3 GIF lying around?

hasn't this been done before?

This model is already available and at a comparable price. Is the G5 going to be faster? I need a computer that will run Maya efficiently, should I wait for this G5 or is it just going to be a better looking box.

Yeah, this will be a problem for those who want a DVD-R along with the fastest (48x or 52x) CD burning speeds. No way to get both in one drive.

The machines can be BTO'd with a combo drive. Has anyone found out what the burn speed is on these?

clicking "learn more" on the BTO page yields this:

Quote:
Combo ("Combination") drives (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) have the capability of creating music and data CDs and reading DVD disks. The drive writes to CD-R at 32x and CD-RW at 10x, reads DVDs at 8x, and reads CDs at 32x. The drive supports CD-ROM, CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW, CDI, CD Bridge, CD Extended, CD Mixed Mode, Photo CD, DVD-Video, and DVD-ROM media.

Some guy in a on slashdot said the new 3.2ghz intel p4 is only 5-6% faster. seems right. I guess it still means that if you use the gcc specmarks then the dual g5 will _still_ blow the p4s away for the rest of the year or so.

Am I missing something but what's the problem with an external firewire optical drive as a second? I have an internal superdrive and an external LeCie 48x CDR.

I think that the G5 is right on the money. The future of computers isn't bigger boxes where you can cram in all your stuff. Especially when the best harware is only going to continue to run hotter and hotter.

Closer look at the case and insides:

http://www.macitynet.it/immagini/vis...se/index.shtml

In the right angle you can see right inside through the mesh. I wonder if those clear covers in the case are standard? If so you can probably run the system with out the side panel. Another interesting idea for the custom market is 3rd party side covers.

yea i wonder how that plastic cover is held on, cuz I am so gonna run mine open if its safe, dust wise. its a work of art inside.

edit:hmm but the drive bays are'nt covered.

2nd edit: they put the power cable plug on the bottom of the tower, thats smart

Hi,

I was just browsing the Apple web-pages on the G5 and also downloaded the pdf's on offer and it mentions that the G5 is based on IBMs Power4 processor. Everyone else is saying that it's a 970 processor but I can't find any mention of "970" in Apple's web-pages. Are Power4 and 970 actually the same thing? Or is the core of it a Power4 but the overall chip called a 970? Can someone clarify this for me?

It means exactly what it says.

Namely, the PPC 970 aka the "G5" is a desktop chip based on the power 4 architecture.

It's not a power 4, but it has similarities.

Where is the El Capitan door?

I was surprised to not see a slot-loading optical bay.

I think the video cards are a little weak. I wanna play Doom3 on my G5, Steve.

Steve said "Kick-ass" every 2 minutes. I love it! Go Steve! He cracked me up!

Is SGI gonna go belly up?

Bye bye iSub and Soundsticks. Time to buy a 5.1 system!

Why bother with slot loading in a tower? They cost more and limit your choices for upgrading as newer drives become available...and there soon will be new ones.

And yes, there had better be a two button mouse or the rest of the personal computing world will continue to laugh.

At these price points, do people think that apple can sell 250,000 units per quarter? If they can, they will be rolling in cash and can push the development of the other systems. My guess - 4th quarter sales of ~300,000 units.
And yes, a PC can be had cheaper but I want a MAC!

The problem being I like my extra hardware in the case. I just think it is silly to have to go out and buy an external drive for a desktop computer, especially a NEW model. My old PC had room for 4. I just think limiting the expandability is a stupid move. Yeah, I know a fast Lacie Firewire drive is nice and all... but I would like to have it safely tucked into the box and out of the way.

Yeah, and my guess is that next Jan or Feb Apple bumps the Powermacs to 2.0, dual 2.2, dual 2.4.

Then July 2004, IBM is fabbing 90 nm G5s and the Powermacs go to 2.4, dual 2.6, dual 3.0, along with new Powerbook G5s.

Mac hardware is looking excellent in the foreseeable future, at least with respect to performance.

So has anyone actually gotten up close and personal with one of these G5s? Any comments on "feel"?

I want to hear how fast it is in real life. I want to hear stories of mouse-burn, because this thing is so fast.
