Oh, goodie. The Apple store is up!

I'm off to look at the 'G5'!

Whoo-hoo!

The dutch Apple site speaks of a Radeon 9800 Pro or NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra to come standard......

Hmmm... I just noticed that the 1.6er doesn't have PCI-X...

Its seems that the 1.8 is a way better deal over: Twice the hard drive, twice the ram, 200mhz more processor, 100mhz more bus, and PCI-X all for only a little more than the 1.6

I'd like to see how the low end compares against the previous high end. Has anyone scraped together those specs yet?

Pricey! (...oh...)

An aside: ironically, the G5 page on the apple store has the g4 specs pic instead of the g5 one. Everything *except* the leaked shot updated. Should we all email them the missing image?

My theory now on the G5s is that the low-end really is too expensive to produce. The new machines run hot and Apple doesn't want to deal with low-GHz G5s anywhere. We're going to have to wait for .09 970s to get the low-end and laptops. The Powermacs will clear the way for lower-cost components as well. Ah well, more waiting.

Hopefully Apple can start revving this line fairly quickly over the next 6 months.

Personally, I think the new machines look like crap, but they look much better in the framework of the http://www.apple.com/powermac page. If you assume euro styling, they look ok. Steve should have ended with the theme from 'Sprockets', though.

What up with Panther? Seems skimpy on the new features. I was expecting more.

You know, this really sucks. Not only do I gotta pony up the $3K for the dual, but I'll have to sink some extra $ for the ATI 9800 BTO option.

At least I pre-warned the wife we were goign to be $3500 poorer in September...

Note lack of game demos.

Well, Apple DID note that an ATI 9800 Pro give 337 frames per second on Quake III Arena!

Kick-a-HA's the snot out of a Dell 3 gig! On games!

Apple does recognise the games market. I'm not sure the WWDC was the place (unless they were releasing an 'X-Box'). It was pretty packed as it was, a great Keynote.

When the 'furore' dies down...Apple will find themselves in the same position they found themselves in with the Powerbook Ti. Demand will soften and they will have to drop prices..?

We'll see.

It does'nt. The low-end is crap compared to the high-end. No PCI-X, slower FSB, slower RAM, half the RAM, half the HD, almost half the CPU, for $2k.

Maybe Apple doesnt even HAVE a 1.6Ghz G5...I mean at that price, they know no one will buy it. Everyone will just jump to the Dual 2Ghz.

PS> The Dual 2Ghz is a pretty damn good deal, if not an awesome deal.
Disappointed about a couple of things:

1) Only one optical drive bay.
2) Only 2 internal HD bays.
3) The design, but I'll get over that. (My anti-Ive campaign has just gathered new momentum, though)

So much for my plan of getting the low-end model. That one seems very 'yikes'.

I'll spend the extra for the 2x2GHz, delete the superdrive and the internal modem, bump the HD to 250 meg, and I'll be in a very nice price range.

Well all I can say is that for once SJ came through and gave us what everybody has been complaining about! Sure they cost a lot. But it's not because of a " Pretty case " anymore. It's what's inside. Any complaining about this is stupid. You get what you pay for. The fastest PC out there.

About no new displays and such, Apple probably put everything into getting this product out there. The new displays will come. But, since I just purchased a 17" Studio display I'm not worried about it.

As far as all those trolls and PC advocates and their rude comments about Apple hardware over the years. Read the specs. Read 'um and weep!

I know there will still be trolls out there but their comments now will be hollow.

Because the hardware is now very competitive it might mean more games coming to the Mac. I wonder what Carmack is saying now?

They are still faster and that is with the 9700Pro the 9800 Pro is even faster.

At least Apple can be competitive in gaming now.

Very different from the numbers Apple gave during the Keynote. Hmm.

The 1.8 AMD opteron got this 1060 1100

Interesting, the machines have a port for an Airport Extreme antenna and a Bluetooth antenna.

An aluminum case is a big faraday cage - no signals inside to speak of. I wonder if Apple will produce these. I don't know where to get a bluetooth antenna...

My reaction:one of the best days in Apple's history. The G5 systems are simply awesome, and Panther looks like OS X is past the "engineering/debugging" stage and moving into new, very exciting territory. Can you imagine how awesome OS X will be by the time Longhorn (aka "Windows Jaguar") comes out in 2005?

what are the fastest pc quake frame rates?.

275 for the 3 Gig Dell!

337 for the G5. Not bad considering most games are prob' PC biased/optimised.

Wait until they start optimising for the G5! With proper dual code!

OVER 60 frames faster.

THAT REALLY IS IMPRESSIVE.

When you consider the constant vying with Intel/Amd...a frame here...a frame there...leaping into the lead with a mere 5-10 frames.

60 frames?

That IS impressive.

Intel aint going to be shipping anything that can make up 60 frames in the next year to my mind...

By then, a 3 gig 970(*?) will kick the snot out of whatever they come up with.

I aggree with johnsonwax the new machines must be very expensive to produce.

I'll wait for revision B and will then choose the lowest priced part with 2 CPUs (in all probability the most expensive model, damn )

Apple got a little creative with their specs didn't they. I think the numbers they report are using gcc on all machines. Not intel's in house compiler, which many claim to be optimized only for spec. Not sure how fair it is to call this the fastest personal computer. Back up to parity though. If it scales fast then we are good for the next 12 months at least.
My guess is that new displays are on hold for a rebuild that will integrate an iSight camera into the frame.

Why is that creative? They are using a real app that developers actually use.

you are right the 1,6 ghz is not interesting the 1,8 is a better buy : twice the memory at 400 mhz nor 333 mhz a hd of 160 GB instead 80 GB, PCI-X instead PCI and 8 ram slot instead 4. Add 200 more mhz and you will know why i will not buy the 1,6 ghz .

BTW the dual 2 ghz is curiously the best buy. Curiously because in general the performance price ratio is not good in the high end configurations.

I watched it on satellite so:

1. Regarding SPECS, they used gcc compiler since it is open and for all paltforms. They had VeriTest do it (not done by Apple). They came up slower in the SPECInt and slightly faster in SPECfp with single processor. All good tests, the duals and actual apps are where they killed.

2. The case is aluminum, the fans are individually controlled, under normal usage at room temperature it generates 35db (compared to ~ 70 for current G4) - this case alone will probably keep the cost higher than El Capitan machines.

3. They designed EVERYTHING around the G5, so they basically ran out of room for the second CD and additional HDDs, but you have Firewire 800 so who cares.

4. Panther is really diving into the Unix end a bit, freeBSD5, gcc3.3, X11 built-in. Better integration for Windows with the Samba and AD integration - I believe a more serious push for IT back end is really going to occur, can't wait to see the server (not mentioned)

5. The bake-offs were impressive, against Xeons no less. To be fair, the Xeon had an ATA drive and not a SCSI, but the machine cost over $4000 to build compared to the $3000 G5. And since we use Xeons, this was much closer to the truth in comparing machines than picking some P4 Dimension.
