Motorola Semiconductor Layoffs Equals Apple Buyout Explained At MWSF?

Could the news of layoffs at Motorola Semiconductor be in preperation for a sellout to Apple. Or could Apple have asked Motorola to slim the workforce under the Motorola name so Apple doesnt have to do it themselves? I am beginning to wonder if the longer keynote has something to do with this or something along the lines of a processor switch.

I posted in another Moto layoff thread (yep, more than one) about being nervous about Moto getting rid of it's fabbing department to make it look good for a buyout.

Won't this hurt Apple?
If Moto is essentailly killing of it's fab dept. then who will make the chips?
Also, if Moto is bought out-won't that delay chips if they are still going to be made?
And, who's to say the new owner won't tell Apple to piss off?

So this might have nothing to do with how much Jobs has to talk about, and everything to do with media coverage.

This might be a big brouhaha about nothing!

That is outrageous, Steve wouldnt make it LONGER because of BILL GATES. The media loves to see what Steve has to say compared to Gates anyway.

I think products are launched when they are finished and the timing is right for Apple.

the iMacs are done right now but MWSF is so close that they have to hold it back for the show.

I see it the same way, but it started with Gates. First Gates knew (suspected) OS X would rock, so called his new OS = XP to get a hold on some of this/Apples X Hype, and then Turned right arround and called the gameing console X- Box to take away from the fact that he / They / Microslosh just practaly ripped X factor from Apples OS, but 10 is better than XP anyway, and we are all aware of it.

Have you been living under an anti-technology rock for the past five+ years? Microsoft started naming things with "X" long before Apple. Active X and Direct X were around before Mac OS X. Microsoft has not changed its nameing scheme simply because Apple released Mac OS X. M$ may copy many things from Apple, but using "X" in their product lineup wasn't one of 'em.

Names schmames--the only thing that's obvious to me is that Windows XP ripped off Aqua in a seriously bad way. It's like some kindergartener copying a Van Gogh painting with crayons and pushing it on the masses. Except computer users are so dumb and brainwashed that they take whatever Micro$oft gives them and think it's the next greatest thing.

Imagine if there were only ONE auto company, and everyone had to buy their cars from this single company. Sure, there would be a few fringe automakers, like BMW, Volvo, etc, but they would all be too expensive for most people. But everyone is so brainwashed, that they think this single automaker actually cares about giving them the best autos that they can possible make.

And as an extra feature, wherever you drive this manufacturers cars, it broadcasts signals to the main HQ, so they can track your position at all times. A giant database analyzes your movements and patterns, so that they can target advertisments at you. So they not only know where you are at all times, but they can use previous data to predict, with 90% accuracy, where you WILL be at all times.

It could happen!!!

Motorola's most recent layoffs of something like 9,300 people cut across several business sectors, including cellular and semiconductor. It was not particular to their chip unit or done because of it. Just another slap in the face basically. Motorola is going in the toilet. I said it a few months ago, I'll say it here.

They've got serious problems internally, and it's as much politics as economics and the bad economy. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the company was broken up and the remaining viable technologies / units being sold off to other companies.

Is Apple going to be one of them? I'm inclined to think not. Why would they want to inherit all the bullcrap political culture problems and economic losses at a time like this? I'm more inclined to think IBM could buy whatever aspects of their semiconductor unit they want (Altivec, maybe some of the faciliies, some of the better engineers, etc)...and let the rest die a peaceful holiday death.

Jobs' MacWorld keynotes always get good coverage, whether Gates is speaking or not. I really don't think Gates' appearance had anything to do with it.

I doubt Apple would consider buying out Motorola's Semiconductor business.

Hey Motorola, 48,400 layoffs since August of last year, another 9,400 just announced! 8,100 from the semiconductor division! To make it more interesting-

Remember the MacCentrwal Moto article "not add flames to the fire" "G4 is progeressing well.." stuff and he was kinda tight lipped about the G5. What if that's because they were'nt doing the G5? How can you comment on a chip you're not making? Also, how can you answer that question and not tip off the fact that AMD is now making the G5? You dodge it as he did!
