G-5's 1.6 arrived at my office today - Page 3

If you're still around richcigar, please run the Altivec Fractal at the default settings with Altivec and MP turned off (on the 1.6 and the dual 1.25). That should give us a good comparison of scalar code execution speed for CPU-bound calculations. It would also sidestep possible altivec pre-fetch commands that may be present in the code.

Let's see. He's at Yale so that means he's on Eastern Standard Time. So hopefully after about an hour or so his workday will be done and he'll have time to spend telling us all about his new machine. At least that's what I'm hoping for!

PLEASE POST KEYBOARD & MOUSE PICTURES!!!

Yes, I would love to know about the mouse! Did Apple come through a supply a 2 button mouse with a scroll wheel or is it the same old one button impractical mouse?

I'm sure Apple would trumpet a new mouse on the G5 site if there was one.

The innards remind me of the Quadra 900/950. Motherboard, processor, hard drive, CD drive, and PCI slots (NuBus on the Quadra of course) are all in the same place. Power supply is significantly smaller on the G5 though.

Welcome to the Future Folks!

Congrats Rich!

So how quiet is it relative to other Macs?

Let's see --- richcigar works at the Yale Divinity School -- maybe it pays to have friends in high places (maybe there is a God).

However, given that the Yale Divinity School is famous for its raucous parties, we may not see richcigar for some time....

Its rather quiet, with my G4 making much more noise, not that much more, but you can hear the G4 under my desk, the G5 is a much quieter. I have the picture, how do I post it here?

can he use Xbench for some benchmarks, or does it not work with X.2.7 or the G5's?

Slightly OT, but since G5 availability at Stanford was mentioned in this thread, check this out:

Attention Internet Users!

"it's" contraction of "it is"
"its" possessive form of the pronoun "it".

It's shameful how grammar on the Internet is losing its accuracy.

Sigh. That's it. I'm at the wrong university. I asked today at McGill about being able to pick up a 1.6 or 1.8 off the floor without an order and it was suggested that I might get lucky around November. Looks like I'll have to play the waiting game with the Apple Store. Fun.

Can't help but LMAO at those of you seeking proof this G5 delivery is real? Wether it is or not, nothing on the 'net surprises or gets me into a frenzy anymore.

Now that I look closer, yes, they are vaguely reminiscent of G5 boxes. But it looks like it's backwards or something...huh.

the data from the "system profiler" would be the most important information to be gleaned from this machine.

Yes it is backwards because it was taken with an iSight camera and grabbed from iChatAV's Video Preference Pane. \

Forget about Altivec Fractal Carbon!!

It prolly has a few DSTs and DCBZs in its Altivec-Code!

Better go with Gaston , it looks WAY better anyway and the guy just released a G5-Version a few hours ago especially for the chosen few that get their shipments first! ;-)
That thing is heavily optimized for Altivec (also G5, as said!) *and* SMP, so a Dual 2GHz should really fly!

See "run benchmark" in the Pulldown-Menues!

Best known score to beat: 0.47fps / 2.143s on a Dual 1.25GHz MDD!

For more Scores see here .

Why the heck does iC AV flip the grabs?

The keyboard is the same as the emac, no new mouse, though the mouse has two plastic "grips" on the left and right, which are not on the mouse that came with my G4, they don't have any function though. The keyboard has the usb ports on the rear instead of the sides. I'll try some more benchmarks soon, and I'll get up more pics as soon as I can

Thanks richcigar! You are upholding your duties as the first G5 owner!

I take this to mean however, that you did not photograph the out of box experience?

Could have been flipped in Preview before it was posted. iChatAV reverses the image so it is like a mirror and thus easier for you to compose yourself in the camera for the other person on the other end.

<off topic> it only flips the local feedback image, not the one broadcast to the other party</>

We're so hungry for details now... I'm surprised that the stanford store hasn't been completely overrun.

The single cpu G5 really is 'missing something'.....

maybe I am just too used to the dual one.

<off-topic reply to off-topic reply>People tend to be far more comfortable looking at their mirror image than their "real" image, since one seldom sees one's face as others see it. Unless your face is symmetrical, you'll like the mirror image better chances are. Then again, perhaps if you've used webcams for a long time maybe it's annoying? (anyone shave using a webcam instead of a mirror?) But Apple should make a toggle for when you need/want to change it.</off-topic reply to off-topic reply>
