Windows and Mac Home Directories

I'm upgrading a lab of computers from Mac OS 9 to Panther. I'm at a university that primarily uses Windows. I'll have a copy of Panther Server on a G5 2 Gig (my computer) and regular Panther for each comptuer.

I was wondering if it's possible to do both of the following. First, have each computer login using the campus Windows login, thus having access to every students personal F Drive. Second, also have home directories on Mac OS X Server for the staff in my department.

If that didn't come out clear, just tell me and I'll try to clarify.

Yes it is possible. Look on Apple's site for LDAP and Active Directory stuff. There is a big PDF that has all the info you need.

You can get them to log into your Windows domain by using ADmitmac by Thursby software. We are using it for our client Dearborn Public Schools in michigan because they just HAVE to be on the windows domain. ugh.

How do I figure out what is being used for authentication and directory services? Do you think that I can set things up without having to ask the campus system administrators for information? I don't really want to deal with them because they think all students are trying to take down the system with their secret viruses.

I've never done it, but it seems like the easiest way to get the lab to work is to connect Panther server to the windows Active Directory. Apple says there isn't any AD tweaks needed to pull this off in Panther. Then you can authenticate the clients to the Panther server. That should be easier than having to set up all the clients to talk to AD.

NO. You need to know the DNS setup, and whether there is one AD authentication server or multiple. You have to know where to point clients for authentication.
