Steve Jobs to Keynote CES

Thread Starter
Just read it on <a href="http://www.go2mac.com/story.lasso?newsID=8788" target="_blank">go2mac</a>.

We all knew we would get treated to a new consumer device at MWSF02, but this ups the ante. My feeling is the return of the Quicktake camera. Who hear wouldn't kill for a digital camera the size of the iPod with the same or more capacity? But Wait! There's more!

No way Apple could compete in the Digital Camera arena against the likes of Canon and Sony without one-upping them with more than just an integrated 5Gb HD. The question I pose to all of you Macpropellerheads is, when Steve holds out this new product in the palm of his hands on January 7th, what will this camera's siamese sibling be?

Could this be the final answer for the MWSF keynote bump?

Wow... everything sure seems to be pointing to something big...

Steve moves the keynote one day back (Gates to keynote that same evening to open CES) This alone set people to speculate... now this...

[quote]
A friend who works at a print shop fulfilling a last minute order for CES flyers today informed me that Steve Jobs will be taking the stage at International CES for the first time to give a keynote address.

Steve will be filling in the slot originally slated for Bob Pittman, Co-COO of AOL Time Warner, "presenting Apple's line of digital lifestyle appliances" and "an intuitive vision for consumer devices: think simple."

Neither Jobs nor Pittman are currently listed on the keynote page. International CES takes place 8-11 January, 2002 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Alexis Park Las Vegas Hilton.
<hr></blockquote>

I can also confirm that AOL Time Warner Co-COO Bob Pittman was indeed set to deliver a CES 2002 keynote on Thursday, January 10, 2002 at 8:30 a.m. in the Las Vegas Hilton Theater. (I think he might have been one of the last keynotes to be announced). Here is the confirmation link:

<a href="http://www.ce.org/newsroom/newsloader.asp?newsfile=8214" target="_blank">http://www.ce.org/newsroom/newsloader.asp?newsfile=8214</a>

We can also confirm that Bob Pittman IS NOT listed as a keynote speaker anymore...

<a href="http://www.cesweb.org/conferences/keynotes.asp?menuItem=1&subMenuItem=1&tabName=Atte ndee" target="_blank">http://www.cesweb.org/conferences/keynotes.asp ?menuItem=1&subMenuItem=1&tabName=Attendee</a>

Can we confirm that Steve will be the person taking the place? Nope but you have to admit much of what this person said to go2mac is true... Bob is out and nobody else is listed in his place...

The part I don't like is the day... Thursday is almost the end of the show... Now I know it wouldn't matter since Steve will have Monday at MWSF to rollout the news... so maybe this is a non-issue.

[edit]
Hmmm it seems Sprint was moved from the Thursday PM spot to the AM spot....

It does seem strange that the Wednesday AM keynote spot is empty....

I love the line: "presenting Apple's line of digital lifestyle appliances"

Okay boys and girls... I wanna see those creative minds working...

Yep I saw that but that doesn't explain the missing keynote for Wednesday AM... Could it be CES couldn't find anyone for the spot? I sorta doubt it but maybe... it just seems strange that the spot just happens to be the first CES keynote after Steve does the MWSF keynote (had it not been moved)... Sure the person who reported this to go2mac could have been totally full of it and just used the pittman conflict as a good 'in' to get them to report the false rumor... go2mac doesn't have the best of track records when it comes to this stuff and the safe money would be wise to BET AGAINST this rumor being true... Then again, the longshot **does** win every once in a blue moon...

I think we can all agree Apple is going after the digital lifestyle (Steve made that very clear) and CES is the center of the digital world so a Steve keynote (Stevenote) wouldn't be out of the question **if** Steve had something to that is...

One thing we know is that he won't be one-upped by Gates. I wonder if Steve has something so *big* planned for MWSF that he wants to show it off at CES too...

Well, all that would make sense.

I think this keynote plays into why Apple moved the keynote up a day (not back, DaveGee). Im sure it wasnt the only reason though. I also can see the keeping-extra-raps-on-the-new-products-being-set -up reason too.
So Jobs can give his keynote, not worry about anyone seeing the new products set up at MWSF, and have plenty of time to head to Las Vegas to get into (wensday or thursday) morning slot at CES <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

I keep telling myself that in 2 weeks from now, my life will be no different than it is today, MWSF come and gone, excitement and disappointment over.

This prototype by Isamu Sanada from his site at <a href="http://www.applele.com" target="_blank">applele</a> is what I had in mind for the next Apple non-mac introduction. I wonder if it's possible to have something like this play and AND record MP3s, aifs, mpgs, QT, and jpgs without going over $500.

Man how I do love that prototype but somehow I just don't think it's 'doable' at that price and at that size... I'd love to be proven wrong and if anyone could do it Apple could... but I just wouldn't bet on it being anytime this year (well in the next 6 months at any rate)...

Nice to dream tho...

Here's and interesting product to be announced by ViewSonic at CES:
[quote]
In addition to introducing a new display built on liquid-crystal-on-silicon technology, which promises much higher resolutions than traditional television screens at a relatively low cost, and a low-cost projector for the home, ViewSonic is providing a sneak peak at a so-called "wireless monitor." All the company is saying, however, is that a prototype of the device will play a role in Bill Gates's keynote speech on January 7. "It's a device that will allow users to experience always-on mobile connectivity to a PC from anywhere in a home," hints ViewSonic spokesperson Jessica Sterns.
<hr></blockquote>

Monday's keynote change is a preemptive strike against the above product and Bill Gates' Tablet PC. We can only hope that the new and revolutionary device is faster cheaper and better than what ViewSonic will have in Bill's hands the evening of the 7th on stage at CES.

I don't know about all japenese designs...
but that design in particular is completly bad. There is no real way to keep the camera steady, the lcd display on on a very weird looking track that doesn't look like it could support itself & would break ery easily, if the display was closed it would cover up the buttons, and you hand woud cover up the SECOND display below. (Why in the world would apple have 2 displays on it???)

applenut, Using general statements (i.e. "all japanese tech designs are the same, they all suck") are tools of the intellectually and creatively deprived.

Design like beauty is subjective, so everyone's opinion of what ugly is is automatically valid (i.e. saying applenut is ugly is irrefutibly valid). However, here's no arguing against form and function. While this hiCam thing can definitely use some refinement on the function side, my main reason for linking to it here was for its size. I don't care how pretty or functional the next "groundbreaking" portable cunsumer electronics device to come from Sony or Apple or whoever is. It's of no use to me if I'm not inclined to carry the damn thing around with me. Remember the Newton ...

I like the "Think Simple" tag line.

Apple releases new "iPaper"

"It's fantastic, you just apply the stylus, and boom! It appears on the paper!, amazing."

Now only 299.99 for each sheet.

As pointed out, it isn't a camera, I really can't imagine Apple doing that again.

all the other designs by that guy suck. all the designs I have seen from other japanese "artists" suck too. Have a problem with that? What do I care.

what did you draw the thing or something.

I happen to agree with applenut. Not to mention the horror of anime!!

Was this ever confirmed? I don't see Steve's name in the CES site. You would think that his name would be with the other keynote speakers.

NO IT IS NOT TRUE!!!
Too bad, would have been nice.
A website (I forget where--so sue me) called up CES and they confirmed that Steve would not be keynoteing. But with all the hype generated from just a rumor, maybe it will happen next year??

It was SpyMac that said the CES rumors were false.

<a href="http://www.spymac.com/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.spymac.com/index.html</a>

"*Update: We made some phone calls regarding Jobs' rumored speech at the CES. Apparently, this rumor is completely false and there are currently no scheduled plans for Jobs to speak at the CES."

So... we have zero confirmations (outside of a friend of a friend at Go2Mac) and a few refutations. MWSF should be enough for now.

Bill Escheray (sp), CEO of Sprint is speaking in place of Bob Pittman (who candled well before Thanksgiving).

If Jobs were speaking, which I doubt at this point, it is certainly not in place of Pittman.
SpyMac didn't call anyone. Shawn King called them up the day the rumor came out and confirmed that Steve wasn't doing the keynote. Here's the extent of his message:

Unlike "Lando", I actually called the CES folks to confirm or deny the rumor.
&lt;http://www.go2mac.com/story.lasso?newsID=8788&gt;

Brad Jones at CES (703-907-7060) told me that it's not true, that Bob Pittman, Co-COO of AOL Time Warner, had cancelled well before Thanksgiving and the slot has already been filled by Bill Esrey, Chairman and CEO
Sprint Corporation.

Another rumor crashing and burning under the weight of those inconvenient things called "facts".

Anyways, that's that...

Very true. Anyone who thinks that Hajime Sorayama sucks has absolutely no idea or understanding about art. While anime and it's related style of illustration may be a style that needs to be understood to be appreciated, it is more of a either like it or you don't. But to say that ALL japanese artist suck is simply ignorant.
