should I buy an iPod or wait?

I'm not sure if I should get an iPod along with the new iMac I ordered last week. I'm torn because I'm tempted by the possibility of a 10 or 20 gig model. My entire collection of MP3's is 16G and it would be great if I could cart it all with me. Any suggestions.

Well do you have 1000 songs to put on it? If not then why not get a current iPod since you don't have the maximum amount of MP3s?

by 16G I mean 16 gigs of songs...or approximately 4,136 songs in my collection...see my dilema? I've nearly converted my entire CD collection to mp3's.

Ahh, I didn't see that part. Then I guess yeah if you could wait a couple of months to see what happened with the iPod then that'd be your best bet.

If you got $399 and about 1000 songs, buy it.

I didn't see that he had 4,136 songs. Thanks for pointing it out for me EmAn.

If you have 4,136 songs, I would listen to EmAn. Wait a couple of months to see if Apple releases a 10 GB or 15 GB iPod. Heck, they may offer a 10 GB iPod for $399 and move the 5 GB iPod to $299.

Thanks guys. You kept me from making an impulse buy. I was about to check-out at the apple website....and you stopped me from spending $369 that I'm not quite ready to spend. I can even justify 10 or 15 gigs as a...er backup drive or something

I dono, I was in the same position as you... I have about 13 Gigs of MP3s... But I bought an iPod.... My reasoning was to buy it ASAP (I got mine the first day they were available ) so I can get the most use out of it until an update came along... but from the way things seem, Apple is going to milk the iPod until it is not in such high demand anymore. As it is there is something like a 10 day wait for one... Demand for them is huge. They are being shipped from taiwan... If you want to listen to your music on the go,, even only 5 gigs of it, GET THE IPOD it is worth every penny. and even if I lost mine today I would still buy one tomorrow IN A SECOND. It had been so useful to me that it has already paid for itself. If you play the waiting game, you are only cheating yourself out of time with you iPod. I say just buy the current model and be happy with it. It is an awesome little machine...

Why dont you wait for a 100GB iPod? So you can have a million songs?! Because im really sure that you listen to all your MP3 files. And you im sure you listen to all of them on the 10h battery.

Even if you go away somewhere 1000 songs is enough. I could not be happier with my iPod.

You never know when you want to listen to a certain song. Taq could all of a sudden have an urge to listen to some GNR, but he did not upload it to his iPod because there was not enough space. If he had a 20 GB iPod, he could simply put all of his songs on it and this problem would be solved. You just never know when you may want to listen to a certain song, and if you do, it will be on the iPod waiting to be selected and listened to. So, even if you don't listen to every song, it will be on their waiting till you have that urge. I know that it has happened to me many times

thanks OSX Addict...that's exactly why I want 10 to 20 gigs. My collection keeps on growing and I can't imagine fitting everything into an iPod, but I'd like to put as much of it in there. I've found myself at work wanting to listen to something I keep on my server at home that I didn't put on my iBook several times. Luckily I can usually just pull them off my home machine through the T1 connection we have. On the road I don't always have this option. It's like when I told myself I would never need more than the 30 MB of hard drive space that came with my performa. Boy was I wrong!

Wait for 10 and 20 GB models. And, when they arrive see which of the pricing/feature sets suits you best. Then promptly go out and wait for the 40 - 60 gig versions.

I wouldn't wait. The price of the larger drives is so high that it could easily be more than 6 months until you see an iPod with the drive. Or the price of the iPod would double along with the size of the drive.

I've converted less than 10% of my CD collection so far and I have more than 5 GB of music already. If two models of the iPod were currently available I'd pay the premium for the larger drive, but they're not. I have no complaints about the 5 GB model. I've found it to be more liberating than I ever expected even though 90% of my CD collection still sits at home.

How much do the bigger drives cost?

If this is the case, by the time Apple releases a 10 (or 20) gig iPod, you'll need a 40gig... I agree with psantora, if I lost mine today, I'd buy a new one tomorrow! As far as those random urges to listen to GnR, if you haven't decided to put that on your iPod, then you'll just have to wait until you get home - but for every other use besides the random urges, 1000 songs on the iPod is friggin' awesome!

I saw somewhere that they're something like 70,000 and 90,000 yen for the 10 and 20 GB drives respectively. That's like $700 and $900 USD I think.

Wow that's a lot. I guess it'll be a while til the iPod gets them.

I am waiting for it to be able to connect to accessories. For example. A MUST, is a microphone, or even a line-in so i can record concerts, lectures, movie audio. A secondary feature that I would like is the ability to sync to a firewire hard drive sans Mac. That means you can have a 60g drive in your car so you will never EVER run out of tunes on a road trip.

...or charge $250 for it

peace
