This is an iMac with the same size panel as the 20" Cinema Display.

1.8 or 1.9 GHz G4 on a 167 MHz bus ?

At a guess, that would be "fear", the emotion engendered by the price-tag, and the years of debt-bondage required by it.

PH34R = Fear

The 20" iMac is so good, it strikes fear into the hearts of PC users.

Fear the debt you'll rack up on it (thanks staphbaby).

May I ask why, especially if it's going to use the same 1.25 GHz G4 and probably, the same graphics card?

That is a good proto-manipulation Barto! I think a 20-inch display on the iMac looks really cool. Sadly I have my mind set on a 15-inch Powerbook and therefore won't be affected by this product update.

If there really is to be a 20" iMac then that must put back any change in form factor to accomodate the G5

It's fairly obvious that there will be no G5 iMac until next year when Apple DOES probably change the form factor. (When they do it will not be for just one configuration as being touted but the complete line. )Also I'd expect the lower wattage G5 to be in the first iMac when it comes ou t and not the current George Foreman grill heat output of the PowerMacs with the 6 fans running. Get it?

It was always extremely optimistic to expect a new form factor before mid next year.

I have some doubts that iMac's arm can hold properly a 20" display. Well, we will soon see, the online Apple Stores are closing one after the other .

Not necessarily so. The current size of the 17" including the VERY wide bezel is nearly 21 inches diagonally. Add another 3/4 inch or reduce the the b ezel width and there would seem to be no need to make the display that much larger. We'll know in a few hours.

U.S. Store now down at 7.52 AM ET

Surely s/he's talking about weight and not horizontal dimensions? Perhaps display hardware is heavier/thicker than lucite?

Apple can make the bezel lighter in weight. Anyway, within the hour we'll know.

As someone who has taken apart iMacs, They could probably hold 30" LCDs no sweat. The base is far, far, FAR heavier than the display.

The base isn't the issue, IMO. The torque/stress on the attachment points of the tilt/swivel arm is a far bigger concern to me. In addition, at what size would a display in the fully prone position block the optical drive or hit the surface of the table?

Great, but I am not talking about base weight; I am talking about the mechanical features of the arm.

Wouldn't the problem be more the ability of the hinges on the arm to bear the weight without sagging, especially over the life-time of the machine?

If the weight of the base were a problem, which I'm sure it isn't, they could probably put some lovely cheap lead/depleted uranium/etc in it anyway...

edit: wow, that was a flurry of responses, and I lose

THAT'S NICE. I'M SURE APPLE WON'T INTRODUCE A PRODUCT THAT HAS AN ARM THAT DOESN'T WORK THOUGH. SERIOUSLY.

Gee, isn't it lucky I can speak all-caps? I would have had no idea what you were saying

I think it's safe to say that the arm was engineered to carry weight higher then the 15 and 17 inch displays.

(Oops my 17" iMac display just fell down!)

An ad for Tekserve in todays New York Times lists a dual 1.8GHz G5 "announced today."
Dual 2.0 $2,999 / dual 1.8 $2,499 / 1.8 $2,099 / 1.6 $1,799
post #111 of 129
Resellers are notorious for knowing nothing, and "announcing" products that where just rumors.

See the DDR Power Mac G4, many resellers "announced" it in early 2002. Great job guys.

Yeah, this time I believe it. Nice to see the dual 2.0 still at the same price point. Wouldn't want anyone who *just* received theirs to flip their lids.
They didn't even bother giving it a 1.33GHz processor like the 17" Powerbook got.

No single 1.8 it seems; and the 20" iMac is only different from the 17" in screen size...

The most exciting thing for me is that it means that they've recalculated the prices to reflect the new-improved AUD. Excitement...

I can't find the resolution on the 20", I hope it is the same as the Cinema display.

Well I for one think that the iMac has now hit the ultimate in terms of design specifications. I am glad that we can have a 160Gb hard drive even if it is too expensive. On e of the problems I have is that if I load my CD's into iTunes there isn't enough room to edit my videos. There are 5 in my family and we all have our own user login so space is very tight on my 17" iMac (60Gb only).

I am disappointed that they didn't bump the speed, but I guess that will happen after the Christmas rush to give January sales a boost.

It's 1680x1050. The CD is 1680x1080.

Yeah, 20" iMac has 1680x1050 resolution...same as 20" Cinema Display.

What's with the silly surfer scene? Wouldn't a winter/holiday one be a tad more sensible?

(notice I didn't say "Christmas", heaven forbid...)
