How much difference does 100Mz make?

Thread Starter
I am looking at buying one of the old imacs. A local store is "blowing them out". They have the 600Mz, 256MB, 40G CDRW model for $1469CAN (aprox $899US) and the 700MZ, 256MB, 60G CDRW model for $1579CAN (aprox $999US). Is the faster model worth the extra $$? How much difference does that extra 100Mz really make?
not sure of actual speed difference from 600 to 700 MHz...i'm sure others could and will help with that...but two things to think of....1. for a hundred bucks US you get a larger HD 2. plus, it seems that os X runs better on faster machines...

899--40 HD, 600 MHz
999--60 HD, 700 MHz

1299--new iMac with LCD and G4

g

i, personnally would get the bottom line new iMac G4 if you can swing it...if not, i would opt for the large HD and slightly faster iMac G3

I would LOVE a new LCD imac, but I just can't do it. When you compare US$999 to $1299, it doesn't seem like much of a difference. BUT the Canadian $ is SOOOO weak right now that it makes a huge difference for me. ($1579 700MZ vs $2049 for the LCD imac).
The worst part is a $CAN buys about the same in Canada as a $US does in the US. So I make the same in CAN$ as I would in US$ in the US. Which means, sigh, that all apple products are pretty pricy here. Imagine having to pay $600 for an ipod??!!!
I would maybe get the 700 Mhz iMac with the larger 60 GB HD. If you are going to do some movie editting, then get the 700 Mhz on. Plus, thegelding has a point, OS X does seem to run better on faster machines, but I don not know how much faster it would run from a 600 Mhz to a 700 Mhz. Anyway, are you Canadian? If so, where is local store that you speak of?

The 100MHz isn't much of a difference. It'll be barely noticable, but OS X does like MHz if there's no G4. I'd go with the 700MHz because of the HD rather than the speed.

I don't do video work . . .yet . . ., so I don't know if the HD is a concern.

I am Canadian, and am in Calgary. Where are you OSXaddict?

I thought OSX was more RAM hungry than MHz.
Yeah, Canadian prices suck. But I'd like to see all the prices for these G3/700's to go for about $1400 (or $875 US).

IF it was just a matter of border hopping, I'd be taking a little trip to Seattle, or ANYWHERE, to buy my mac, but my problem is the exchange rate. The Canadian $ has dropped, so even if I went to the US, I would still have to convert my CAN$ to US$ and not get much for it . So My imac would still cost ME a lot.

Thanks for the thought though! I think I'll just pray for the Canadian $ to get stronger!
dang, forgot about the exchange rate....sorry...well, the cd/rw iMac LCD doesn't come out for 2 months, perhaps either canadian dollars go up, or us dollars go down....or both and you get the iMac cheap....hoping for the best for you....g

Well if it goes down to 50 cents I better start making more $$! I have to be able to buy my mac stuff!!

My favorite place to shop for apple stuff is actually Compusmart. The prices are price matched from macwarehouse.ca. So if anyone else is interested in the deals you can order from there too.
100 MHz makes a difference if it is added to 0 MHz. In that case it is worth a lot to the user.

Probably doesnt mean that much anymore.
So many Canadians! Cool ! Being yet another Canadian I can chime in with my gripes about the Canadian 'Peso' and how it makes being a Mac user so farking expensive! I mean, $600 iPod BEFORE our lovely 14% tax! Egads! Oh well, that's the cost for free medicare...or something, I forget our excuse for taxes. Just be glad we don't live in Sweden where taxes are 25%!!!!

Anyway, I'd go for the iMac with the larger HD, even 60gb isn't that much anymore if you plan on having mp3s, movies, or any other collection of files.

Since I use my PowerBook as a portable library I copied the WorldBook Encyclopedia CDs onto my HD so I didn't have to carry them with me, it takes up 1.5 gigs or so but it's worth it. I also have a public domain eText library which is about 500mb on here, so you see, even the smallest files take up a lot of space when you get a lot of them.

But if HD space really doesn't matter, I doubt you'd see much of a difference between 100mhz. I got the 550mhz PowerBook instead of the 667mhz one because in what I'm doing (Email, web browsing, mp3s, reading text files etc.) I don't really care about speed. Just as long as the OS runs fast enough (which it does). All I can suggest is, save the money from getting the cheaper iMac and buy ram, lots of it. Max out the ram if you're running OS X, ram makes all the difference!

Good luck with your decision, either way you'll be getting a great machine. BTW: What colours do they have?

Dear GOD! ¢50! That's pathetic. Whenever I go to the US and convert my money it seems like I'm always getting less and less back. Now if I buy something in the US instead of Canada it costs me more, I remember the days people would pop across the border to buy stuff to save money. Now it adds to the price. Oh well.

/end fiscal rant (and damn the world economy!)

More and more of us Canucks showing up here. Nice to see.

$1579 for the 700 MHz model is a nice price. Lowest I saw the 600 for was $1549.

You would only be paying another $110 CDN for a small speed boost, and quite an increase in hard drive capacity. Personally, I would get the 700 in a heartbeat.

It will be faster (even if only slightly), but you're getting a 50% increase in HD space. That's quite the jump. These days, even if you think you won't need it, you'll probably end up regretting it in 6 months when you've got that 40 filled.

Anyway, in 6 months, you won't even miss that $100. That's only like going to what, 3 movies? Stay home a few weekends and get the 700.

BTW - how's the snow there? I hear there's a heavy snowfall warning there in Calgary tonight. We don't know how much of that will hit us here in Medicine Hat... I'm hoping not much!

HEY!

Another Canadian here 8)
I am on an island even.. any guesses? (it was just 4:20 - if that helps any of you

Let's just say we almost NEVER get the traditional 'Canadian' winter.

Anyway.. yeah about that dollar.. OUCH. My new Ti is on it's way (sweet deal of course and combing through all the accessory and spec sites.. realizing everything is obviously in US$.. it sucks I tell you. But compared to EVERYTHING else in life.. I would say we have it.. well.. better !!!

Sockboy, I went through that 100MHz thing with the Ti and did not go for it. It is actually 117MHz in my case.. plus the bigger HD.. and I believe the bus is a different speed.. but when I really thought about it (I JUST sold my G4/400/2GRam tower).. the jump I am making is to a machine tonnes sweeter than that G4/400.. plus the Ti has a WAY better video card to drive my 17"ASDCRT and a few other glorious bells and whistles..

Buy the 600, LOAD IT WITH RAM (put in as much as it can take, 2 - 512's?). Buy them quick too.. I hear ram is on it's way up soon.
40 and 60 gig HD's are BIG HD's! You can always buy a FW external HD, or even USB for cost savings later.. and they both have CDRW.

That's my advice.. sorry it took so long to get to it

Tha RAM advice is good. Prices really are starting to rise.
Sure, buy as much RAM as you can, it'll help.

And the upgrade thing on the Ti is worse - way more of a price diff there.

But really, we're talking only $100 CDN! Go for it. If it was $200 or $250 then I'd think differently, but $100?

Do it. You'll be glad you did in a very short time.

Oh yeah, Burn, you're not a real Canadian.

(said watching snow zip by my window, spelling at least 4 hours of snow removal for me tomorrow...)

Oh,

One more thing.. what computer are you coming from?

Are you upgrading or has it been a while since your last upgrade?

I only ask because if you are already on a weak machine, ask yourself what you need the extra MHz for? 600 is smoking if you're coming from "nothing" (or a machine that's years old)

Can you wait until MWTokyo? (less than 2 months)

Why should he wait? It's not like there's gunna be any new iMacs.

No you're right.. I just see more hardware in the pipeline to equal cheaper pricing on that end. But I don't believe that to be the case either. Move along nothing to see here

Murbot.. I grew up smack dab in the middle of frozen hell (Winnipeg).. I feel for you.. HAHAHA I've had my deck door open all day! and it's 7pm already, hehehe.

I think you may be right about going for the 700, I may have read the orig. post wrong. I thought the $100 was a problem of budget.. if it isn't, Sockboy, go for the 700!

Dunno what i was thinking.. just have Ti on the brain

Aren't those instant Graemlins (it IS spelled Graemlins!?) annoying?

Thanks everyone. I think I will go for the 700. I have a 400Mz DV imac now. So it isn't THAT old. My MAIN reason for upgrading is to get the CDRW. I never use the DVD on my imac (I have a Pismo with DVD and use that a lot). To buy an external CDRW would cost a few hundred $$, so I thought I'd sell my 400mz (while it still has some resale value) and get a new machine. Maybe in 18 months I'll go for a flat panel imac. I have had good luck over the years buying very recently discontinued computers, so I thought I'd go for it again.

Thanks also for the heads up on the rising prices of RAM. I'll look into that.

And we did get dumped on here in Calgary. It has been snowing all day and is still coming down! <--- not embarrssed, but cold!

This city has the most messed up weather, winters are brutally cold and summers are disgustingly hot. Messed up little chunk of Canada here. Plus we're the murder capitol of the country. Yay for us.

One thing to consider if you're ever buying an LCD based computer (tower with an LCD, laptop), when you buy from London Drugs, they have a 15 day return policy. If you're not happy with the computer for any reason, just take it in and get a refund with no questions asked. I've done this myself.

That way, if you get stuck with a dead pixel, you can take it in for a refund, and grab one at another location and try again.

I might have done this with the new iMac, but LD is usually VERY slow at getting new products in. Christ, they don't even have freakin' iPods in stock yet...
