"open with ..." menu show apps multiple times! how to fix?

If I right-click (or ctrl-click) for example on a .JPG file and go to the "open with" menu I see certain apps listed more than once (e. g. Safari, MSIE, QuickTime ...).

How come?
And how do I fix this (e. g. delete whoch prefs file or what internal DB?

Do you have multiple copies installed? Perhaps on multiple drives?

Nope!
There is not even a classic version of MSIE on the system!

Nope!
Single Mac, single installation (7C107), Single install of all Apps etc.

... and BTW both items in the Menu work, so it's a mere cosmetical issue, exceot if it points to some sort of corrupion :-(

I'd try all the generic fixes as listed in the Genius Bar FAQ. Delete your caches and then reboot being the biggest "fix all" that stands out in my mind.

Speaking of which, I'm moving this to the Genius Bar now.

After deleting everything is ~/Library/Caches the issue persists.

The other 'fix all' that comes to mind would be repairing permissions, but my first guess would have been the cache.

I don't see how repairing permissions could possibly fix this, but you never know.

Now that I think of it, I think I've seen that happen on my computer too. Time for an investigation.

Perhaps you have a folder of aliases that's causing it? Maybe a recent items or favorites type folder?

Repaired permissions, fsck-ed the disks.
No aliases (except those that Panther manages itself).

What is lsregister?

-dump Display full database contents after registration.

Perhaps you did a system upgrade by the Archive and Install method. This puts some of the previous versions of apps in the Previous Systems folder before installing new versions.

Look for Previous Systems on your main hard drive.

Alternatively, just search for some of the twice appearing apps and see where they are.
