G4 800?

Thread Starter
I'm trying to decide whether or not the to get the G4 800 tower or iMac superdrive. I can get an education deal on the PM G4 800 w/ 15" LCD for $1890. I have read benchmarks that say the PM G4 is faster than the new iMac, but I can't decide if I wan't the iMac instead. I don't do any video editing so I'm not sure if the superdrive would come in handy that much. Also the PM G4 has the expandability that's nice when I want to add a second HD or new video card. Tough decision. What do you guys think?

Definitely get the PowerMac.

Me too - I just bought a G4 800 PowerMac after canceling my iMac order. Still loving it (although I did get the 17" LCD).

Yeah Murbot is the perfect example.

This is because I convinced him to go for the tower

Macintosh, why would you get the iMac?

I bought the iMac because i like to read.
You see, i curl up with a nice novel (you know, like gatsby, or 'when corporations rule the world') and throw a fuzy blanket over my feet. then i turn on the iMac (sitting on my end table), and can easily adjust the shade, err, screen to perfectly light my pages as i read.

oh yeah, and i like the idea of gumdrops.

The problem with the iMac is that screen resolution

1024x768 is hardly cutting it for serious works.

Final Cut Pro requires at least 1280x1024 to have all the windows and palettes nicely laid out.

Graphic programs are getting so much more reliant on palettes and toolbars......To avoid those screen clutter you again need at least 1280x1024

Also iMac doesn't support dual monitor.....which is another disadvantage...

hey, didnt i just see you in another thread trying to get the the "extra" imac?! hehe.

i got my imac G4 because i literally have ZERO space for a tower. and in the past i've never bothered to upgrade anything even if i could. the $1000+ i saved by not buying a tower and a flat display (and i wouldnt settle for the low end stuff), i can put towards another machine in the future. i know this isnt the best answer for everyone, but after a lot of thought, i had to make the realistic choice.

Glad you chose the tower. I am saving for my PowerMac & Cinema Display for over the summer... I am glad I did not blow it on the sweet iMac.

Yeah. I'd take a PM over the iMac through.

If you could get the titanium and run two LCD displays I might consider a Tower, but it is just too damn big and noisy. I must have looked at them a dozen times; luckily they were not available in January or I would have been in Jazzy's predicament. I went with the iMac 800 on January 7 and it is an marvelous thing. I have my net and all my OSX things running on it at the office, while a Cube and 15" LCD runs the university's Outlook basedemail and keeps me linked to everything else. They BOTH fit on my desk with plenty of room left over at the edges to plug in a laptop or an iPod, or a camera. If I was going to buy an 800 MHz Mac, I would buy the iMac actually, since internal expansion wasn't the utmost concern. I just really dig its looks, and it would cost less than a tower + LCD...and take up so much less space.

Maybe I should convince my parents to replace one of their old CRT iMacs.
