This can only mean one thing...

New patterns for CRT iMacs! "Granola" and, uh, "Grass."

I'm moved already.

Cheers,

Mark.

Common guys, you know better than to let this stuff give you a virtual hard-on. And ladies, don't let it...uh...well never mind.

...based on how Steve has over-hyped stuff in the past, is there anyone here who doubts that he would call a new LCD iMac and the G4 bumped to or over a GHz "Big, even by our standards?" Let's remember what their idea of big is (new product) vs. ours (G5 clocked well over GHz), and what "their standards" means. To me it means, always releasing slick looking but under-clocked products at big events.

Getting up to the GHz barrier alone will be enough to make Steve hypervenilate and start coughing up gigaflops all over the stage. Getting even slightly over the GHz barrier and giving everyone a slick new iMac would be "big", even by their standards *cough, cough*.

Bottom line: don't drop your skivvies in preparation for Macworld love just yet. Hype is just that until we see the goods.

A new iMac fits the bill, finally reaching 1 GHz doesn't (its only about 15%, still way behind Wintel, and MHz doesn't matter - remember?). Alternatively some radically new gadget to attach to your digital hub. This is Segway-style hype.

True enough, but Apple's well aware of the G5 hype, and frankly, most of the people who check the Apple site aren't just any old Apple consumer, but rather people who are big on Apple. Most have probably heard the G5 rumors, and many of which are the core G5 expecting geeks. So if anybody KNOW's they're pouring fuel specifically on that fire - it's Apple.

In short, this is either one of the biggest "bait-&-switches" Apple's ever pulled - in which case, the switch had better be really BIG to make up for another 6 months of G4 mediocrity ... it might be a whole new home wireless entertainment network & hardware, with remote windowing of some sort.

OR

We're getting G5's Pro, G4 iMacs - and some other way cool mystery gadget/system - perhaps even wireless as mentioned above ... 'cause another iPod alone and minor speed bump with LCD iMacs just ain't gonna cut it. Let's face it, this time, Steve's ego's at stake.

At this point, I think the odds are a little better than 50/50 that we're probably getting G5's.

... and just in the 'nic 'o time too.

I'd say the G5-o-meter is going up with the new hype from Apple...presently the needle is at about 56% and slowly creeping up. Last night the needle was at 48%. Boy what a difference a couple of hours and a new home page make.

You all are going to be VERY disappointed. I agree, Apple would think an LCD iMac (esp. with G4) and passing the GHz barrier is greater than their standards.

Hmm. Could this be another instance of Apple underestimating the expectations it generates? They 'blew it' with the iPod in that respect. Perhaps they haven't learned, or have decided that the group of people that overblow the hype that Apple generates is negligible.

Moving up the keynote a day was big.

When the Cube was introduced at MWNY, I was in the keynote. My Dad didn't really want to see the speech, so he got the expo only pass. As a result, he was one of the first people to walk into the expo at 10 AM when it opened. He saw the G4 cube and used it before anyone else. He thought it was cool, but had no idea what it was. After that, he went and found a place to get coffee.

I don't really think that Apple would move the keynote up a day just for that. So the question is this: Why is Apple having the keynote a day earlier? I think it's because Steve's keynote was rescheduled to be longer and they didn't want people who signed up for expensive workshops to miss them.

Steve's keynote being scheduled for that long also means that he obviously has more to say than usual. More time = More/Bigger announcements.

So is the hype real/justified, or is it just to keep people happy that had to rebook flights and change travel plans?

Something to remember while reading the hype Apple put on the web site...

Apple introduced the 500Mhz G4 in Sept of 1999 and now just 2 years later they now have an 867Mhz G4...

367Mhz in only two short years.. now I know this isn't exacty Apples fault but no matter where the blame goes the last two years haven't gotten us much from Apple (in the desktop sector). CD-RW and DVD-R are cool... Airport is too... but the meat between the bread has been less than tasty for quite some time...

I am convinced this is all part of the hype machine. They moved the keynote back a day to get people talking and speculating. It means more media will show up and it means the rumour mills like this one will be running amuck trying to guess. The sad truth: The only way we can find out is by watching the keynote.

Maximum RDF exposure. That's what this is all about. Because the more RDF you have, the easier you part with your cash. An extra to buy stuff. An extra day of coverage in the media.

I don't think Apple would drum up this much hype if they couldn't deliver. I think (hope) they learned the lesson after MWNY '01..there was after all the "no new hardware" announcement at Seybold (or whatever it was in the Fall). The only question really is whether or not they think the new iMac is enough to justify the hype.
Wow. This is some far-out hype.

LCD iMac for sure, but that isn't enough to warrant such hype. A single new product revision is not that "big" of an event, even if it's a new iMac. What about the show where Apple introduced the cube, and the new Titanium? They didn't hype that show like this.

No, this is an order of magnitude larger. Here's what I think:

G4 iMacs.
G5 Powermacs.

New headless iMac/consumer tower/reworked cube powered by a G4 and speced about like the current towers but without PCI slots.

Speed-bumped powermacs alone are not enough, even if they are >1GHz. If the Powermacs broke the 1 GHz barrier, that would only be a 15% increase in MHz...nothing to write home about.

LCD iMacs alone are not enough...it is a commonplace item, and even Apple's lineup is full of LCD displays. 2 years ago an LCD iMac would have been huge, but today it inspires only yawns.
Maybe we'll see rackmount G4 servers as well?

Apple is really hyping this one. They are making no attempts to dampen the hype either, for sure.

I think Steve was quite displeased with the showing back in New York in July.

If G4's show up in iMacs, I think G5 towers will happen also.

Once the first item is shown, I think we can then anticipate what will be next. Apple will want to differentiate between the lines. That is unless that Motorola got some insane speeds out of the G4 which I really doubt. I seriously doubt we would see anything higher than 1.2 GHZ at best.

Of course, there is always the wildcard. Some new digital device perhaps.

But still, the computers are Apples bread and butter. I would be somewhat concerned if this devices get all the hype while the CPU's languish.

Its going to be exciting either way.

Maybe the one you're thinking of was last year's MWSF. I was thinking about recent Apple events, and that was one of the best ever - finally breaking 500Mhz with the 733, intro of the Superdrive and iDVD, and one more thing - the TiBook, one of the coolest products Apple has ever made. I hope this one is as good as that.

And the hype on last year's MWSF wasn't that great. People were predicting a new PowerBook, but they had been predicting that for a year. And MOSR had said there wouldn't be a 733, despite the fact that CNet had reported it.

Hmmm, I always wondered why there was no MP3 player with the iBook. Looks like Apple was keeping them out of the spotlight until the iPod showed up....
I wonder when the idea was first hatched? after MWSF01?
