No new iMac (not yet anyway)...

Most people in these forums seem to think there will be a new iMac released on J7. However, why would Apple launch a new iMac right after Christmas? Releasing a new model would only annoy 'new' to Apple customers and infuriate the Mac 'faithful'!

Instead the iMac will be phased out by Feb 2002 and a new model of the cube/iMacII will be introduced. The new model will come bundled with a standard (wide screen) monitor though an upgrade to larger screen would be optional extra.

The 'BIG' order for LCD's is because there will be a new Apple monitor range - all in wide screen format. Apple are keen to offload the current models so these look likely to be replaced come J7.

The new monitors will also come with a remote control - the idea being that you'll be able to control your DVD's iMovies and iTunes etc from the comfort of an armchair. The original iMac had infer-red (remember?). The credit card remote will sport an iPod interface without the LCD display - the options would appear on the monitor. It will also be possible to boot your Mac from this control 'iPad'.

Seems like a good way to clear out old inventory to me.

Apple didn't care when they pissed off people when they added the Combo drive to the TiBook.

Anyway, the new iMac should've been introduced well before MWSF 2002 so I'm pretty sure we'll see it next week.

Yeah. Right. They're not going to release it at the expo that they themselves are saying "This one is big." All signs point to new iMacs at MWSF.

MWNY is for introducing products that will sell for the Christmas season. The Xmas season is good in sales, and thus new products aren't need to spur sales. It's during times of low sales that companies need new products to help out revenue. The Post-Christmas season is one of these times.

Like was already said, this xmax season worked to clear out inventory of the current models. And in the case of the Powermacs, if Powermac G5s are released, then it is very possible that the current G4 Powermac lineup will continue for a while longer.

As for the current iMac, it may also be phased out slowly, and not completely replaced by the LCD model. The CRT model is still good for schools and since CRTs only get cheaper, Apple's margins on it continue to grow. Too bad it sucks so hard.
