Well....my dual gig with geForce Ti arrived today!! Ordered on the 13th, received on the 20th....not bad! If any of you have any questions let me know....BTW yes it is pretty loud...sounds like a microwave oven. Oh well, I'll crank up the iTunes I guess.

Like a microwave oven ? Is it really that bad ? To me, a microwave oven is really noisy ! Is this just an exaggeration, or a realistic description ?

And how is Jaguar ? Do you feel a big improvement over 10.1.5 ? I mean, is it snappier ? How is the window resizing ?

And please, can you describe the front plate in details ? Make a comparison between the new front plate (texture, color, plastic) and the old QS front plate.

Thanks a lot in advance.

My initial observations:

Unpacking: Apple packs their products better than any company I have ever seen. Alot of attention to detail...usb cable ends have really neat cover/cable clip. Just really nice....is was ashame I had to unpack it...like a perfectly wrapped present.

The front plate feels like plastic, but it appears to be metal and is very reflective....just like a mirror. The power on light has a really cool glow.....neat.

Ok....maybe not as loud as a microwave, but the sound is noticable. Its somewhat louder than my B&W...hard to quantify.

My old computer was a B&W g3 350, so its hard compare 10.1.5 and 10.2. Everything is very fluid. Window resizing in IE is now tolerable, but nowhere near as smooth as Windows 2000/XP. Application launch times are very quick, with the exception of iPhoto and iDvd. I love iPhoto, but man, what a pig. It even takes forever to quit.....I don't understand.

I haven't had a chance to test out the geForce Ti. I have Return to Castle Wolfenstein on order......that should provide a pretty good test. I still have the default 256mb of ram....I have 512 on order...should be here tomorrow.

I will spend most of tonight transfer files etc.....let me know if you have any more questions.

I debated 867 v. 1 Gig. I think the value play is the 867. The 1 Gig just isn't worth the extra $700 for the extra few seconds saved. So I went with:

867 and added SuperDrive and Radeon 9000. All that plus express shipping and tax for under $2000. I'll add a stick of 512MB RAM and in Dec I'll dump the system on ebay for about what I paid to prepare for what I hope is my new G5 system in Jan/Feb. Hopefully that machine will have true DDR RAM.
3 weeks ago I solf my TiBook 400 and bought a 600Mhz iBook (Dare I say I like it more than the TiBook?). This was to hold me over since I also wanted a new PowerMac.

Once they got released I figured maybe I could find an older dual 800 at a better price. No such luck. All the stuff on eBay is going to crazy prices so today I took the plunge and picked up a stock dual 867.

I'll be pulling my DDR RAM from my PC and stuffing that in tomorrow and I'll pick up a SuperDrive soon to either replace or compliment teh combo drive.

I wasn't sure about the speed of this new unit compared to the old stuff (never used a dual CPU machine before) but once I saw how fast this baby launched 6 apps at the same time sold me BIG TIME.

I haven't unpacked it yet, I'll do that tomorrow. I've read the manual so far and in the store I was very impressed with the internal layout. Apple really outdid themselves this time.

The look? We'll I guess it will grow on me...

To the guy with the $9,200 order: if you are really going to buy RAM from Apple, then you are either so rich you don't care for your money or stupid or something

I will max my RAM out as soon as my G4 arrives, at a local reseller. Why?
Apple cost: 1548
reseller cost: 543,60

Apple stuff already costs too much here, I'm not going to give other money to Apple if I can get the same stuff cheaper elsewhere. Just to give you an idea of how much it costs here: I paid my Cinema HD Display more than $5,000; it costs $3,499 in the USA.

BTW, I will not put a second optical drive in the second drive bay.

What was your previous Mac if I may ask? Did you do some tests to see the difference in speed? I am thinking about replacing an original G4/500Mhz with the new DP 1Ghz.

I'm glad you guys got yours already... but now it's starting to annoy me that mine hasn't even gotten to "being prepped" yet, never mind shipped yet. Still says being assembled. I ordered memory for it yesterday, and now I'm just waiting... and waiting. Come on, hurry up!

I had been planning to buy the new dual 1ghz, but have been having second thoughts and am now considering the OLD dual 1ghz for several reasons. I'm open to being talked out of it, hence this post.

Factors in favor of the NEW machine:
1. faster bus
2. DDR memory
3. nifty mirror on the case front
4. more room for drive expansion
5. up to 2gb ram
6. better video card included

Factors in favor of the OLD machine:
1. cheaper by $300
2. includes 512mb ram instead of 256mb
3. I already have another 512mb of unused PC133 DIMMs, worth $100
4. more L3 cache

So... upgrading the NEW machine to 1gb ram would cost me $2500 + $300 = $2800. Upgrading the OLD machine to 1gb ram would be $2200. A $300 difference is one thing, but the $600 difference has me thinking of buying a quicksilver.

Go ahead and talk me out of it...

Oh, and in case it makes a difference, I'll be using the machine for the following activities, roughly in order of importance:

1. artwork and graphic design (Photoshop, InDesign, a little Quark)

2. digital audio recording, mixing/editing, and mastering (Spark, Digital Performer, Ableton Live)

3. Final Cut Pro and eventually DVD Studio Pro

Hmmm, I just thought of one other thing in favor of the new machine.... it comes with jaguar, which would save me $130. Decisions, decisions.
Wait a minute... if I buy a new Quicksilver, even if it doesn't come with Jaguar, I can get the $19.99 upgrade to Jaguar, right?

Yes...that is correct, assuming its a new purchase from an authorized Apple Dealer.

All new Quicksilvers will have Jaguar preinstalled on the hard drive whether you buy it from Apple, MacMall, or CompUSA.

Hmmm.... I think you have your terminology confused. The new "mirror plate" machines aren't Quicksilvers, and since the Quicksilvers in stores now were all manufactured weeks or months ago, why would they have Jaguar on them?

$2999 CDN (you know that funny coloured Monoply money from up north).

+512 MB RAM from dealer.

This is one massive upgrade for me! This replaces my "trusty" PM 6500/250 with a 250 MHz Sonnet G3 upgrade overclocked to 325 MHz and 96 MB or RAM

I will finally be able to burn my Masters thesis and all related materials onto a single disk!

Now if Apple would only fast track my order ahead of everyone else's (because I'm just such a nice guy).

P.S. I feel confident that this new machine will feel faster than my current one!

Not the GeForce 4 Ti, but the ATi Radeon 9000 Pro. It seems like graphics cards are the main holdup at the moment. I'm actually surprised that the GeForce 4 Ti is causing such a long backorder(2-3 weeks), considering it's been out much longer than the Radeon(which has a 7-10 day wait).

Oh well.

I ordered 2 dual 1 Ghz PowerMacs the 13th of august at a local authorized apple reseller (about 100$ cheaper then the apple store).
But they still haven't gotten machines yet from Apple.
Apple release machine saying " available today " 2 weeks later I still haven't seen anything :'(

I received my Dual 867 yesterday from microwarehouse, it only took one day to arrive. I was upgrading from a Yikes G4 400, so this is a huge difference for me. I am very pleased with the machine even if its a little louder than my previous G4.

I'm eyeing the dual 867 heavily...I figure a dual 867 decked out with RAM and a geforce ti will run warcraft 3* really well, along with all my other applications.

No... but I have an 18" Viewsonic flat panel display, so that's good enough for now. And no, it's not half as good as Apple's flat panels but... I already have it and I don't have the extra $1,000 for an Apple 17" flat panel. At least not right now.

I've got my Dual 867 setup and transferrring files from my old 867 QS.

I also have 2 22" Cinema Displays setting on my desk right now. pretty Cool. it's like a wall of pixels.

The bad part is that I have to copy 50Gb of files rom the QS to the MDD (mirrored Drive Doors) machine and it says "22 hours"

Tis is of course over a 10 base T ethernet connection. I'm dying to find a cossover cable to speed this crap up. i thought I had read somewhere that Apple's built in ethernet ports auto-sensed a crossover connection allowing you to use a standard ethernet cable for copying files. Or am I wrong?

To those worried about fan noise, I am currently sitting between a QS 867 and a DP 867 MDD and the QS are 10% louder than the new machines. Or the new machines are 10% quieter. At least in my case.

I'll wait until i copy all these files over before I dive into Jaguar.

Connect both computers with a firewire cable. Restart the older computer while pressing the "T" key. You are now in Firewire Disk Transfer mode, your older computer acts as a hard drive. Then drag over the 50GB of files .

I'm a newbie when it comes to firewire. The only firewire cable i have looks like it was meant to be plugged into a camera, (one end has a small connector).. so I can buy a firewire cable that has two big ends?

I'll look for those I guess.
