Will 10.2 help my B&W G3?

My second computer (which I am starting to use more and more becuase its in my room) is a B&W 400MHz G3 with 384MB of RAM installed. Will upgrading to 10.2 increase speed?

-Also is the hack to use quartz extreme with a PCI card worth it with my computer...and is it safe?

No chance of me using the PCI hack on my WallStreet, for obvious reasons

Yes, 10.2 will help - the improvement on my 266mHz PBG3 (66mHz bus, 384mb RAM) is substantial. Everything is more solid, more stable; SCOD is comparatively rare, now - and comparatively short-lived when it does appear.

It's not "fast" - even OS 9 is not particularly "fast" @ 266mHz, but it is much smoother, and enough different things have been sped up that the whole machine feels less sluggish and more responsive.

Lots of kewl new touches in the grand Mac traditions - little things (launching a Print no longer brings my 'Book to its knees for the hour or so required to load PrintCenter, pre-Jag!!! , the new GetInfo is real nice, bash & zsh are included (used to use them both on my Amiga), etc.

Not perfect, but MUCH better - and very nice!

Dumb question: How would the speed of a B and W 400 mhz with 10.2 be compared to a PowerMac 8100 100 mhz with OS9?

I have a PM 8100 and its a tad slow in OS9, but liveable. If I could find a B and W 400 cheap would it be worth it?................................

quartz extreme is no help on a B&W G3 400. QE does not support the rage 128 card (even the pro) or any PCI card.

You must have missed the part about the PCI hack. There is a way to get the PCI Radeon card to use QE, and it'll come pretty close to saturating the PCI bus. But it does work and on a slower computer, it will help.

Actually, I've read reports of the Quartz Extreme PCI hack actually *worsening* performance on systems the already make heavy use of the bus -- namely ones with high-speed SCSI hard drives connected through a PCI card.

So, just know that you *should* still be very careful with the hack.

A B&W G3/300 is faster in 10.1.5 than a 8100/100 in so a G4/400 will be faster still.
A 7600/200 is at least the same speed in 10.1.5 as the 8100 in OS 9

I'm still confused. If the hack helps PCI Radeon Cards use QE then how does that help the PCI Rage 128 (Pro or not) cards in a B/W G3?

It doesn't. No Rage card supports QE regardless of what kind of bus it's on.

Is upgrading to 10.2 worth it if QE doesn't work? I mean 10.1.5 is kinda lagging on the G3...not untolerable but annoying since i'm used to the 733 QS.

-Does 10.2 add that much speed without QE?

Am I missing something? How are you running 10.1.5 on a PM 7600 and 8100? I thought you needed a G3 or better. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I think that regardless of your machine, Jag will run faster than 10.1.5. I think... So, it's at least worth a try.

Or you could just install 10.0 for a while and then upgrade to 10.1 and be happy where you are

can somone give me a definate for sure things will speed up, because its my brothers computer and he is in spain and said the only things i can do for it are things to make it better. And I don't want to give up the way everything works perfect in 10.1.5 for 10.2 and its errors, although few

a b/w g3 owner in trouble i see, well i am typing this from my b/w on jaguar right now, and i personally have nothing against performance, its a 350mhz blue and white (will be g4 450 come monday) but i dont find it bad at all, i manage to do flash, illustrator in this thing and love jaguar , ram will definately help, nothing lower then 256 id say, and turning off genie, magnification will make things speedier, so id advise the upgrade, ive never run X on thsi thing, just jaguar, but hopefully this helps, if ya want more info email me at mills2444@mac.com and id be glad to answer any questions you have concerning b/w g3 jaguar performance.

I used an 8100/100 in OS 9 for a couple of months, and yes, it is slow. However, it is much faster in 9.1 than in 9.0.4. The only problem is getting 9.1 onto the computer. There are two ways - either use the 9.1 install disk (you can't use the 9.0.4 installer and upgrade it), or move the hard drive to a different computer and put 9.1 on there (in which case you can upgrade it using the 9.0.4 -&gt; 9.1 updater).

I'd say 9.0.4 on my 8100/100 is about as slow as OS 10.2.1 on my Wallstreet PowerBook (233 MHz G3). They both have a little lag when using menus and stuff, but at least they're usable. One concern about putting OS 9 on an 8100 is that 8100s usually have pretty small hard drives, and OS 9 takes up quite a bit of room.

I used OS X 10.1.5 on a blue and white once, and it was really smooth (at least compared to my Wallstreet), but it had been upgraded to G4/400.
