Dear Lord this thread is turning pornographic. In the interest of keeping the REAL thread alive here, here goes:
Booyah! A holographic display or a PRACTICAL application of holographic storage would definitely be worth Apple's big hype pronouncments recently.
We wouold have heard about advancements made in optical storage already, though. There's no way Apple could keep a lid on ALL the companies making headway in this direction. There are a bunch. I wouldn't mind having an indestructible crystal to carry around in my pocket, capable of holding a nice even terabyte. Hmm... I wonder how fast that would be at writes and rewrites...
As for a holographic display... it sounds really cool, but it isn't really all that practical. You need a holographic projecting device, a nice blank space or wall in front of you, and a wicked fast graphics processor. What's the point in having it on a desktop machine? There are wonderful Cinema displays recently produced by Apple for those. And somehow I thnk a holographic projector weighs too much for use in a SuperBook.
So, looks like of these two, holographic memory/storage is more likely.
As for power sources, I personally don't like fuel cells. Hydrogen is DANGEROUS. And unless you want to go back to your local Apple Store every 100 hours or whatever to refill your PowerBook, you need to buy whole canisters of the stuff. Damn dangerous. Especially near hot microprocessors.
