MOTU, Mackie or M-Audio just to get started.

I hear ya. A video setup is all the worse with decks, NTSC monitors, capture cards...

Just do your research before you buy, and try to keep it simple. You'll add on as you need later.

I'm pretty much the bargain shopper from hell
when I'm buying anything, so the more I study
my options the better.

I'm wishing that the M Box was 4 in F/W not 2 in USB and
the Duo2 is out of my range, so that leaves me with either
the M-Audio 410 or 1810
Motu Traveller
or possibly
Mackie's Onyx 12 or 16 series.

but them I'm out another $499 (edu)
for Logic 7 Pro.

ALSO ProTools LE won't be Tiger ready for at least 2 more months.

I really need a new KB controller/workstation

MIkes, OMG!

and of course the biggest hurdle of all is

cleaning up my basement & studio for all this stuff!
I hear ya with the microphones, DAMN, they are expensive!! I would go for the M-Audio FW410 now it can work with Pro-tools LE. Its a great piece of Kit if you dont need heaps of I/O. I have one and it rocks hard. You could start with Logic Express and trade up later, it actually works out at the same price (Apple's nice like that) I have Logic Express 7, GarageBand 2 and Sibelius on a a 1.2Ghz upgraded DA G4 and that does me for everything. I find it hard to justify getting Pro-Tools, maybe once I get real Sound Design work I can do it.....

You might also want to check out Tascam and Edirol. Although, I'm not an audio guy, so I'm not sure if they're options for you. And there's always eBay and refurbs.

Yes I too caved shamelessly!

When the Apple Dual Core XStations finally make their long awaited debut,

I will feel lower than the festering boils on the buttocks of a flea.

But until that time, I'm gonna finally try to get something creative done
before I take my eternal dirt nap.

What's funny is that I originally viewed the 200MHz speed bump with a lot of derision, as I'm holding out to update my home machine to a "real" screamer.

However, my boss came to me last week and said "You need to get a new computer."
Needless to say, my views have changed significantly, and I'm pretty sure that my (planned) DP 2.0GHz will perform quite nicely. They're still painfully fast machines, just not absolute bleeding edge.

Also interesting to point out that while I was spec-ing Dell workstations, the corresponding Mac offerings were still quite comparable. FSB speeds were consistently higher, but PCI-e was noticeably absent. Prices were pretty equal across the board. I could build my own box for considerably less, but since I'm not bankrolling it that facet doesn't apply to me.
Since this machine will be used mostly for science apps (the most demanding will probably be Chimera), I'm sure this machine will last quite some time. (Revison history is a bit slower in academia)

Any comments on these specs?:
DP 2.0GHz Powermac (apple special deal)
ATI 9800 SE (256MB)
1.5 Gig RAM
Dell 2005FPW monitor

Would I be better off with the X800 card for 2D work? I wonder if there is any noticable diference between the 9650 and X800 for general interface responsivness? thanks for any advice!

The 9650 will come with a DVI -> VGA converter for your LaCie, just run it as a 2nd monitor and put your graphics intense apps on that monitor. It'll work fine

YOU WILL NOT BE UNHAPPY WITH THAT MACHINE!

I had that exact same machine (except the graphics card and monitor). I couldn't ever get the procs to max out on me unless I was: compiling, rendering, or benchmarking. The machine screamed! The only reason I got rid of it was because I thought the next update was going to be PCI-Express. Dumb Dumb Dumb. I seriously regret getting rid of it, now that I'm macless. I miss it a lot (especially since the newest 2.7's will not be a whole lot faster). The rev B dual 2.0 was great because of the updated powersupply, fan control and heatsink. Great machine! With that graphics card you'll be a happy camper .

Me too!

I just ordered myself:
2x2.0GHz
2.0 GiB RAM
ATI 9650/256MiB
250GiB HDD

It's to replace my G4-DA/533 workhorse.

Actually, it's a testement to Apple that I was still able to be productive with a 533 !

It's my 12th Mac, but the first new one I've purchased.

My 2.0 dually got here today!

Still waiting for the monitor .
I personally could wait before springing for a new PowerMac. My current PowerMac G4 dual 500 with 768 MB of RAM and an additional 100MB hard drive is more than sufficient for all of the programs I have including Final Cut Pro HD. The only advantage of a faster PowerMac for me is that it would be able to do everything I do now only faster. Because I'm editing in DV and not HD, I don't see it being worth the extra dough. I have to give kudos to Apple though... I've had this Mac since 1999 and it's never let me down. I've NEVER had a PC for more than 2 1/2 years before replacing it.

My order status states, "On or before 06/09/2005." Granted this could change at any moment. Regardless, it will give me time to install a second drive and transition My Life from my Powerbook to the G5.

Woot! My G5 is so dern perdy!

and my monitor has shipped!

Now for all the fun setting everything up again.

Got's to have my Unsanity APE's
Fallen,
I am the last person to discourage anyone from adding 3rd partry add ons to the OS. I have been a utility nut since Now Utilities under OS7. I have just had a nightmare of a time with the Unsanity stuff. Kernal panics, and general wierdness. I encourage you to get tiger up and running with your main apps and fonts first, with all your hardware happy before I'd dump those puppies into the guts of the new machine. Now living without LaunchBar and Default Folder... thats another story! =)
Actually Fallen,

I encourage you to do the same. There is a little weirdness moving to the G5 processor. They seem more prone to Kernel Panics than the G4. I seriously encourage you to install Tiger and a few needed apps and run the hell out of it for a week. Make sure you don't get any KP's. After that SLOWLY add things in. This will save you a lot of headache if things do go wrong. If you install everything at once and get problems, you will have NO idea what it was and you'll have to start all over. (definitely encourage dual partitions (1 with an absolute fresh OS to revert to and test)).

Actually, for doing any kind of pro work, I'd advise against ever installing any haxies at all.

I understand and appreciate your concerns.

I'll be running my G5 pretty much default for a few weeks at least,
just to make sure everything is doing what's it's supposed to.

I understand that some apps still aren't ready for Tiger,
so I've partitioned my 160 HD to 110GB for Tiger
and the remaining space of the second partition for Panther.

I may wipe this configuration too if I can afford a 2nd 160 GB SATA soon.

That's another reason I'm keeping things simple for now.

The only problem I've had so far was not using enough pressure to
install my extra RAM, man them's is tight!
I thought the RAM sticks were in O.K., but they weren't showing up
in the system profiler, so I had to shut down and re-install them till
the RAM keepers clicked.

What I miss the most from Unsanity are
ClearDock
Aluminum Alloy and
Pinwheel ( as opposed to Beach Ball}
and my BLUE system prefs dock icon

Hopefully more and more compatible skin options will become available as more people write these mini apps for Tiger.

Right now I'm more concerned with getting my new monitor, then
getting everything up and running with some degree of permanence.

I hear you with the RAM sticks in the G5. I thought I was going to break something getting them in.

What I do at home is to use two different users. One is my general email, web, games, etc. The other is the "Pro" user; this one I keep ultra clean. I not sure if haxies work at the user level, but if they did you could keep them isolated to your user account.

I haven't heard of any problems installng Unsanity APE and Clear Dock.

They're both free and get rid of that nagging Dock shadow.
You can also customize your application running arrows to
show on any display background you choose.

Bwah! ha! ha! ha! The new system that I am waiting on is not why my basement build-out that I started back in January isn't finished. Mine is not finished because I am lazy and I sit at my computer way too long.

My wife is not mad that I ordered the Power Mac, but she did not have to tell me that I better get down there and finish the two rooms either. One of the rooms is my new computer room. If I do not get it finished soon, I might have to put a bed in it instead of my computer desk.

Awesome! I needed to see a picture of one one next to a computer to get a better idea of what I was dealing with. Looks great. I'm getting 2 of those bad boys now.

You know, before I saw this comment, I was thinking how I like set-up photos where the flash lights the internals of the G5 to show the fans--makes the G5 look all industrial. Very cool--and very nice set-up. Congrats.

My SO and I usually upgrade our tower every 4 years, and the replacement of our DP800 is coming this August, but I'll wait for the next rev solely to get PCI-E (if that happens then).
