12" PB Super or Combo?

Okay. I may be having the jitters. Have already placed an order for the combo. Now thinking I should have went for the superdrive and am considering revising my order. (Of course this will most likely push me back farther in the line.)

What do you peeps think?

We don't have a superdrive in our house. Will be doing that sometime in the future with an iMac. This could be a ways off.

If you've got the money I'd definitely go for the superdrive especially if you've got a DV Cam. The 4.7 gig discs are going to be more and more useful and the iDVD app is just jaw-dropping (I've got the 15" s/drive imac). Can't wait for i-life.

Either way though you're going to have one of the best laptops ever invented and personally I think it's the best of all the power books.

I have a combo iBook. I'm super happy with it, and until now, I've always thought of the super drive as an unnecessary luxury for those who already own expensive DV cams.

After backing up lots of stuff to CDs though (30 GB hard drive is a bit too small for me), I am sure my next computer will be superdrive-equipped. By the time I want one, it'll probably be fast and it'll keep the rest of the speeds acceptibly high as well (I wouldn't be thrilled about an 8x CDR speed if I could get the combo with a 24x). Although I don't own a DV cam and I have no plans to drop the cash for one, a DVD burner would be pretty sweet anyway, if for no reason other than backups.

Super for sure. iPhoto burns to DVDs now.(?) Great way to store your images longer term. Real digital photo albums.
I will get a superdrive myself, as my desktop is a cube with cd-burner only.... and will get airport to link them... can't wait.
Just remember that the Superdrive only writes CDs at 8x. Your combo drive, OTOH, burns CDs at 24x.

I have a Superdrive in my desktop and, while it is great to be able to burn DVDs, it's a pretty rare thing. More often I'm just burning CDS...which takes three times longer that it could.

If you don't have an immediate need for burning DVDs, then I think you're fine with the combo. Wait and get a Superdrive in your next desktop.

Oh, and congrats on the mini-book order. I'm way jealous.

Yes, we have a DV cam and that is what has me on the fence.

I think this is what happened to me when I got the iBook 500. Almost went for the CD/DVD drive and then at the last minute went for the combo. Never regretted it.

Ohhh....that iDVD 3 looked damn nice. iLife really misses something without it. iDVD is the hook isn't it?

Check out the themes in iDVD3 and then see if that makes your mindup
<a href="http://www.apple.com/idvd/theater/themes.html" target="_blank">IDVD themes</a>

CD's are just too small to be doing all your backup on these days. Hey.. by the superdrive and make your money back doing a few home dvds for friends/neighbours at $30 a go
post #9 of 23
I'm in the same boat exactly.

I'm considering going for the SuperDrive. I'm not burning a ton of CDs, so the speed isn't a huge issue... but I can always pick up a cheap FW burner if I want at 48x or higher.

I think they do bump you to the back of the line if you chance your order though. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

It'll help with resale too. You know, just in case.

murbot,

Looking at the iDVD stuff last night is what has me all confused.

I will probably change my order. I have been without an iBook for over a month now. Getting to the back of the line won't be fun but it is probably the thing to do. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Go for it - I don't think you'll regret it at all.

when you get it you can rip it open and show us all how the heck they crammed a superdrive in there

I put my order for the 12" in right after the keynote, then realized that I should've bought the Apple 512MB DDR SO-DIMM. I called the Apple Store last night to change it (on hold for 30 min!), and asked the rep whether making the change would push me to the back of the line - he said no, it wouldn't affect the position of my order. I checked it today, and he'd just cancelled the original PB, and added the new machine, 512MB SO-DIMM and all, to the existing web order number. No reconfirmation via email or anything like that. Perhaps because of this he was very careful to make sure I understood the $$ change of the order total.

Oops, forgot my 2 cents: go for the Superdrive. I have a tower with one else I would've got it instead of the combo.

It looks like I can get edu pricing (I have a friendly grad dept, you guys rock!) if the superdrive is considered BTO, then I won't be able to get edu pricing on that, and the difference would be about 500-550 Canadian. So for me, iDunno if it's worth it considering it's slow, while the CD drive is nice and fast.

It might be possible that I can get edu pricing on the Superdrive 12, but it seems to hinge on whether or not "Custom Built" is considered BTO for discount purposes. The no BTO thing sucks because for 80 bucks Canadian I definitely would have upped the HDD to 60GB. For once the Canadian HDD upgrade price is reasonable.

Gotta ask my campus rep what the discount is exactly (anybody know the Candian edu price off hand?) Little things add up.

Well, I couldn't resist. Called the Apple Store and changed my order. Bumped up to the superdrive.

The iLife package is just too enticing. I had my iBook for about 1-1/2 years and I presume I will use this much longer and pass it down within the family.

May have to see if I can do a few movies for pay as suggested earlier to recoup the extra $200.

BTW, when you revise your order, they keep you in the same order position.

Apple estimates Jan 24 - Feb 6 shipping dates. I would guess closer to Feb 6 if it goes as it usually does.

You made a wise choice my friend, I have the SuperDrive iMac 800 and I love making my own DVD's. You will not regret this decision, it will open your eyes to the coolness of what you can do with a computer, and even inspire you to do it. Seriously, I mean as soon as you see your first DVD on the TV you might pass out.

Matsu, are you talking about institutional edu pricing? I'm pretty sure the discount still applies to custom orders; I bought a dual 867 for my office last fall, with SuperDrive and upgraded video, and the institutional pricing still applied. I've also done CTO on personal purchases and gotten the edu individual discount.

The new 12 PB is perfect for me and i will be purchasing one soon so i've thought about this question too... in deciding think about your priorities and the drives abilities... i personally think anyone getting the superdrive in a portable right now are suckers for technology... it costs 200 extra and its SLOWER... check the specs...

COMBO 0x/8x/24x/10x/24x
SUPERDRIVE 1x/8x/ 8x/ 4x/24x

DVD write/read CD write/rewrite/read

if you really want to burn dvds get an external for 50 bucks more that will be 4x faster i think... remember it writes DVD's in real time... that sucks
post #18 of 23
get the superdrive PB and then add an external CD burner like this at the apple store:
<a href="http://store.apple.com/1-800-800-APPL/WebObjects/HED.woa/334/wo/u029NY6YGA4s3MKA07J94SMgQnD/2.5.0.3.27.12.0.5.2.13.0" target="_blank">here</a>

remember that iDVD won't work with an external DVD yet (and maybe never) and with an external cd burner you can get 48X speed...yes 1x DVD sucks, but is much faster than 0x burning of DVDs.... g
it's all fun till somebody loses an eye

Well I just checked and I can only get edu pricing on the Combo model, and it's pretty good compared to standard pricing on the Superdrive (about 800 CAN less) So that decision is pretty much made for me. :/ Now I just have to decide to swipe the plastic and get increasingly impatient over the next month!

That's what did it for me in the end. The fast writing on the combo drive is alluring but we also have an external CD burner that we use with our iMac which is much faster.

Thinking of finally burning DVD's and using iDVD 3 to do it is very exciting.
