Guantanamo Britons back home

Four British men held by the US on suspicion of 'al Qaeda links' have been released and are back in the UK.

All have apparently undergone extensive torture and 2 have been kept in complete isolation for 18 months.

Quote:
At least two of them were apparently held in solitary confinement, in small cells, apparently with no natural light, nothing to do or read, and nobody but the occasional guard to talk to.

These cells are in Camp Echo, a high-security facility within Camp Delta. Inmates there do not have rights to association, recreation or joint prayers, which are held by other detainees.

Camp authorities reportedly withdrew a guard from outside Begg's cell and put a CCTV camera in his place, after it was discovered that the guard had been talking to Begg.

The men's lawyers have stated that they intend to sue the US government over the treatment of the detainees and will donate any monies gained to charity.

I love the way the BBC editorializes in its news coverage.

I don't - the BBC is nothing more than a pro-Israel Blairite propaganda tool now.

It's not that it is anti-left as it makes no such distinction (doesn't need to - the left in the UK are more right-wing than the right anyway and in some policy areas bordering on the fascistic) but more that it is anti truth.

It is a shadow of it's former self now on all levels - the entertainment aspect is merely brainwashing pap drip-fed to the sheep to keep them somnabulent and quiescent while the actual 'news' content is undoubtedly derived from a central newsroom located deep in the bowels of some overfunded Whitehall Department - most probably, to cut costs, a small room consisting of one underpaid phone operator manning a sole outgoing line to BBC central and two incoming from Washington and Tel Aviv.

Or Washington and Washington.

All 4 released without a single charge.

Someone needs to invade, i mean liberate, America, to restore peace, freedom and democracy.

Who's gonna answer for all the time they spent in jail? And what about others that are held even though no law permits that?

I guess one needs to be as strong as Britain to get its citizens out of that torture camp. But few are, unfortunately.

I wish them much luck; they will need it.

I wouldn't say that the UK is a shining beacon of freedom - the government had then arrested as soon as they touched down, the thing is there was no evidence - let's say that again, the intelligence services and police could provide no evidence against them and that's why they've been released.

The response of the government has been immediate - questions obviously are being asked - and it is this: install indefinite house arrest (which is illegal).

Just to make it clear: the UK government's answer to the criticism of the practice of detaining people without trial, without providing evidence (to them or anyone else) and for indefinite periods of time is to do the same thing - only in their own houses rather than jail.

The release in the first place had nothing to do with the integrity of the UK - Blair is a Bush Toady and the only question he ever asks when told to jump is 'how high ?' - they were under pressure from EU Human Rights legislation.

Legislation they are busily going through the mechanics of opting out from.

As expected, reports are starting to emerge of the abuse inflicted on the men by US forces.

Quote:
Mr Begg was allegedly subjected to a month of daily beatings and threatened with death. He is also alleged to have been told by US interrogators that he would be sent to Egypt where the "real" torture would begin. "He was humiliated in every way possible," said Mr Stafford Smith.

Mr Abbasi's [another of the men] lawyer, Louise Christian, said that her client had been interviewed by British anti-terrorism police twice. She added: "During the interview he looked distressed and he's finding it difficult."

She added that Mr Abbasi was struggling to adjust now. "He told me that when they asked him if he wanted a hot drink he said no, he just wanted a glass of water," she said. "He was used to the situation where in Guantánamo when [if] he asked for something he would be abused."

The reference to Egypt in the first quote is a sickening twist - referring to the 'torture jets' issue it is yet more evidence that as Bush lies glibly of 'rogue states' and installing 'freedom' - he is all the time in reality in league with the 'rogue states' and is an accomplice in the barbarism and murder.
