Personally I think it is a good choice. Might not be so great for French Mac users, though.

Definitely a dumb name. Rendezvous was great. Not sure why Tibco is so darn picky... it increases people's awareness of the name resulting in more people asking about their product when they see the name in connection with them. Mindshare.

Please don't use Bonjour, Apple. You can think of something better.

nice idea. problem is that at this stage of corporate evolution they don't like the 'share' part of mindshare or marketshare... f8ck Tibco...

How about:

LaizzezFaire

A) Still French
B) It means translated to English "Hands Off"

We use the term in this country in politics to refer to a LaizzezFaire approach to the econony or job market or any number of things.

Zero Config is a "hands off" approach to IP Configuring.

Plus it would mean something to French Mac users AND sound less dorky.

The alternative...

Everyone outside of Apple just continue to call it Rendezvous!

No one will give a shit about the name, so long as it works as billed.

All anyone wants is a visual notification, not some sound bite that wastes resources just to here, "Bonjour."

To shut everyone up they should offer a variety of voice samples for everyone.

In a corporate environment that crap is turned off and only a visual notifier will signify the connection.

My guess is that Apple and many of it's French Engineers thought it would show a bit of "classical touches."

If you aren't intimately familiar with Apple Engineering there are quite a few French Engineers employed.

They could have gone with something like, "OnAir" like in the broadcast industry but unless we see a list we have no clue what got tossed around during their brainstorming sessions.

Wow what a dumb name! I don't know French very well but doesn't bon jour only apply to the morning? How do I do zero conf at night using bonjour?

It means "good day" as in morning, noon, afternoon, early evening...essentially daytime. Presumably Apple will copyright Bonsoir next and have the OS switch it after nightfall. Afterall, Powerbooks have ambient light sensors and auto-sych to network time too.

I guess Salut or Allô are out of the question?

Ias there some kind of engineering name for this, I hate this name which is obviously a peoduct of a half-cocked, rushed and maybe stoned marketing dept.

Given the choice in my circle of friends, I would never say "I set up an airport network" I always say "I run wiffi, or 802.11g or b"

The truly great name for this would have been uPnP (universal plug and play) but M$ sort of f***ed that up...

but really, just call it iLan or EZ-Net or something like that.
