The Powerbook 17"

The story at ThinkSecret is right on. I recently found out information that Apple is sticking to a March 15th ship date for orders to be shipping in volume. The 10th is a hopeful goal but the 15th is what they are banking on. The problems? Well it depends on who you talk to really but the consensus is this: They are building them and they are breaking. This is all I have been told. Breaking could mean casing, operation...who knows? But Apple is taking the approach that a little bad PR right now is worth avoiding a huge backlog of AppleCare cases for bad Powerbooks. Let alone expensive.

They are making sure they are right so sit tight, they will be worth it.

On January 12th, I went to a large store in Osaka (Yodobashi Camera) to order the 17 inch, which I did. I was told that Apple would not be delivering until the last week in March. They also had an Apple representative there. I asked him. He said the same thing.

I was back today and the same Apple Rep was there. I asked him when the initial delivery would be to that store. Again he said the last week of March. The delivery date promises have not changed here.

My first apple....I placed my order for the 17" the first week of Feb. and was told it would be there by the 7th of Feb, then it was the 10th, then it next week, then it was the first week of Mar.
I had enough of the delays and picked up a 12" that was in stock, I am very happy with the 12pb and will wait until next year to get a 17" or I might stay with the 12" ....... it is a fine machine and it is in my hands. I used the money I saved to get an airport extreme base and cannon digi cam as well as office for mac.
I don't know what it was ....but I like it!

patients is not one of my virtues. I sold my old powerbook on ebay and i am without a powerbook untill my 17 comes.

when i ordered my pb 17" last month i also ordered the microsaver security cable, office osx, new brenthaven 17" backpack, virtual pc 6, power converter, screen protector and extra battery...

yesterday everything including my 17" backpack arrived.. now the only thing i'm waiting for is the laptop!!!! this sucks!

So Boston, What do you think of the Brenthaven 17" case? I ordered the shoulder case and would love to have it now to move into. I ordered my 17" PowerBook on Jan 10 from MacZones and they have not recieved any units yet. Nor do they know when they will recieve any.

Still waiting, but getting more excited.

You may want to sell your powerbook now as by the time the 17 ships all of the people who want used 15's will have them. and you will be left selling to people who want it for nothing. also, at the next opportunity i expect apple will upgrade the 15 to an alluminium with bluetooth. you need to seel while your model is still current.

the backpack is extremely full featured.. tons of pockets, room for everything, the slipcase for the 17" is a very nice option.. has a handle so you can pull it out of the bag... nice!

i tried the backpack on and all i can say is "wow".. it fits like a glove.. very very comforatable (of course.. this is w/out the 17" book in there).

I purchased the leather screen cover from jr hill. nice product!

*As for the Powerbooks, it would appear that those who preordered the 17-inch PBG4s will be getting theirs in the last week to ten days of the month, and Apple expects to be able to offer 17-inch models for sale to new customers on demand by the first of April. Also, it expects to update the 15-inch Titanium Powerbook to a 15.4-inch Aluminum model around the same time.

I saw the 17 at the apple store in Northridge yesterday. and it is HUGE! I think that the pictures of the 15 next to the 17 on the apple website are not to scale. I think i have fallen in love and i have probably bought my last desktop

Just keeping this thread alive. How many of you have actually ordered a 17 powerbook?

I ordered mine through the mac mall for NAPP Members for $3109. Everything is cheaper aned they ship things to you first.

I have to be honest..I am getting afraid of getting a 17" and I may cancel my order.

If they are having this much trouble than I may wait for v.2 My client has sent his 12" back to Apple twice. 1st: Trackpad clicker broke. 2nd: Battery would not go back in completely.

I originally ordered my 17" PowerBook from Casper at MacZones, 1-800-248-0800 ext 3052#. I have been ordering all my computer equipement from him for a few years now. I placed my order on Jan 10, along with a new G4 Server and other stuff.

According to him, the delay has been the venting wasn't allowing proper cooling and cause the PowerBook to become hot to touch. Redesigning the case to allow for better venting and then testing this new configuration has been the hold up.

I hope to have mine within the next two weeks! I can't wait to start using it, since my current G4 tower has a Rage 128 video card with only 16 Mb of VRAM. My principle applications, ArchiCAD and Electric Image, are now fully Open GL, so my redraw time is crawling. Tired of waiting seconds every time I want to edit a bezier curve.

I'll of course drop a line here when I recieve it. I haven't even seen one yet!

The membership cost $99 a year and you get access to a web site and the best photoshop magazine on photoshop I have ever seen. Lots of downloadable actions and cool stuff for photoshop. Plus the tons of discounts, More than well worth the $99.00 a year. I also got a humdred dollors off the epson 2200 pinter. If you love photoshop and want to be better at it then this is a no brainer. I would be a member even with out the discounts i get.

Apple prides itself on not having buggy products. so, I am not too concerned about getting a lemon. I trust that apple will fix the problem before I get mine, even if it takes two months I would prefer that apple get it right before releasing it (God! I hope that does not happen). I ordered one before seeing it and now that i have seen it I am so impressed. when you open it it is this Giant brushed metal thing and when you close it it sort of shrinks. I have lost interest in desktop computers

I just got off the phone with the Apple Store. The sales rep. I spoke with checked and said the 17" PowerBook should start shipping late this week from Taiwan. The earliest backorders should start receiving units by the middle of next week. New orders are still slated to ship in 3-5 weeks.

I am actually ordering my 17" PowerBook thru a special deal with a software developer since I use their software. They placed a large order on Jan 10th, and are supposedly the third order in the queue.

It was explained to me that there were actually a few days after the MWSF keynote that orders were not accepted. Anyone who ordered from a reseller actually only got on that resellers back order list. The resellers themselves could not place orders with Apple until Friday January 10th. Not that this matters any....

Anyway, my contact checked and confirmed that Apple plans to ship units starting March 15th and 16th. He wondered why they were quoting a weekend date, but that is what he was told. My shipment should arrive here in Houston by the middle to end of next week. Finally!

I also ordered the Brenthaven shoulder case. My contact told me that Apple has exclusivity with this case and that all orders are going thru them. It is scheduled to ship the same day.

Funny, I'm spending about $3500 on something I have never seen. But I also bought the original Titanium PowerBook when it came out. Seems my timing always runs witht the 1.0 versions.

I'll drop a line here as soon as I recieve my new Lapzilla.

When I first read about the 17 i remember that the superdrive was a 2x for dvd. the guy at the apple store even confirmed this. now when i check the website it says that the 17 superdrive is a 1X. what gives? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Actually that spec changed sometime in January (or possibly early Feb). I know that when I ordered mine on Jan 10, the Superdrive was specd to have 2x DVD write speed. Don't think there is much we can do about it.

Hopefully a firmware update will up the speed on day. Is this possible?

steve gets what steve wants, if they used a marketing department we would of never had a cube or DVD ROM drives. Which is a good bad thing. too many cooks makes things normaler and less cutting edge. just one vision can be powerful (ie Walt Disney) but when you miss the mark you are way off.

I just cancelled my order from MacMall, after a bad experience. I ordered some printer inks, and received them along with more than $2000 in HP printer drivers for a Windoze system that I didn't order. <img src="graemlins/surprised.gif" border="0" alt="[surprised]" /> I wasn't charged, but I also can't get them to answer e-mails or calls for me to return them. If I had less scruples, they'd be on e-bay!!! I'm not sure I want to buy an expensive new system from a company that is that unresponsive. So I lost my place in the queue, and just ordered my PB 17" directly from Apple. Luckily, I don't have to sell my PB 15". My daughter just has to wait that much longer for it!!! She's not to happy, though.
