The NAPP mac mal is different in that you have one person who handles everything. My girl is christine and she knows alot about the products she is selling. I am a photoshop guy so i would be a NAPP member anyway. sorry you lost your spot in the Q. when do you think that we will get our AI's I only ordered mine last week. :cool:

I called the Apple Store again today, and after talking with several people and being transfered to several departments, I was told that the 17" PowerBook would ship out on the 16th-18th for developers. All other customers will ship out in 2-3 weeks. Lucky for me, I ordered thru a developer. I've been waiting since Jan 10th for mine.

I'll let everyone know if I recieve a shipping confirmation.

The 17 at the applestore in northtidge won't even turn on. I know because I tried and I asked. it is just a pretty piece of Aluminium on a rotating stand. <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

The one at The Grove was useable for a while but is now a piece of metal on a stand. Not a good feeling considering I am throwing 3k at it.

more like 4k when you add backpack, 512 more ram and 3 year warrantee.

I am not sure what the problem could be. I mean it is not like they have never put a G4 in a 1" thin case before. If anything I would expect fewer problems than the TI. I mean yes its thin but you have alot more width and depth. components are farther apart and have less of a problem with heat. Their are only 3 new things in the AI for crying out loud,
*Firewire 800
*backlit keybord
*built in bluetooth
everything else is an upgrade from the TI. one would asume that apple have improved performance / reliability on everthing from its knowledge of TI maintanence, I would expect the AI to be a more reliable machine than the TI. Then again what do I know?
My guess is that they must have gotten faulty components. Probably the 2Xsuperdrive is breaking so they are putting 1X's in them until they get a working 2X model.

The 17" has a 167MHz motherboard which should speed it up a good bit over the TI. Currently my 400 mhz Pismo maxed with RAM is faster than my wife's 600 mhz iBook with 640 RAM - major difference is system bus speed in the Pismo's favor in spite of the iBook being 18 months newer model.

So, has anyone here recieved a shpping notice from Apple? My dealer was out Friday, getting married Saturday (the nerve of him - I'm waiting for my PowerBook). Hopefully I'll hear that it is in route soon.

Can't wait for someone with a functioning unit to post a review. Actually, I more interested in receiving mine.

I did Saturday morning! Right now it is still sitting in Taiwan, but I have second day air so I am hoping Tuesday.

Well, it's Tuesday morning and it seems the first 17" PowerBooks should reach customers by tomorrow morning. I've been scouring the net reading forums with tracking info. I really need to get a life.

I still have not recieved a shipping confirmation from Apple. But since I ordered thru a developer, and he has been out getting married, I suppose that still doesn't mean mine isn't en route. He should be back in the office today, so I hope to hear soon that it will be here by Thursday.

Anyone else expecting one soon?

I just spoke with my sales guy - a Developer, not a retailer. He informs me that Apple only shipped 150 units, and that was to show that some indeed did ship this quarter. They are still having production problems, so had these specially built. They also hand picked who recieves them.

As much as I would love to see them all ship and be flawless units, I kinda don't think that will happen. I bought the orignal TiBook just after it was announce and loved it. I did have to have it sent in once for replacement of the DVD drive, but otherwise thought it was wonderful.

There is hope I'll still receive one this week. ;-)

He did say my Brenthaven bag was due to be delivered today.

Frankly, I'm having a hard time buying the "Only 150, hand-picked people!". I bought the 17" stock on Jan. 10. I've never owned a Mac before. There is no reason why they would pick me out of everyone else. More likely THEY ARE FULFILLING THE ORDERS AS THEY WERE RECEIVED.

Hey Escher, so how did it feel to open, close and hold? More rigid than the Ti? How about the display brightness? and last question, did the area around the keyboard seem strangely vast or is it so thin you don't notice how much computer (warm?) is under your wrists?

Thanks in advance! I'm also hoping the 12" has a lighted keyboard by Fall as well.

MacGregor: The 17-inch PowerBook at the Apple Store was on display in the window, which unfortunately meant no touching. However, two guys over on MacNN have received their 17-inch PowerBooks and posted a bunch of great pictures and reports. Check out the following:

(1) Ken Mingis' I just picked up my 17" and
(2) Karim's PowerBook 17" Review threads.

Vicarious enjoyment of new harware. How fun!

You would think that would be the case, but then explain how several Apple Retail Stores have had several for sale for walk-ins. There was a posting on another site that the Cambridge store received 6 and, of course, sold out immediately.

Also, it has been reported on other forums that people who ordered on Jan 7th have not received shipping notices, while someone who ordered on the 10th did.

I ordered thru a developer who offered me a special deal. He was allocated two units this shipment and was told the rest would start trickling in during the next 2-3 weeks. Luckily he agreed to send me one of those he recieved. Should have mine by Friday! I'l hear more today.

I've been a Macintosh user since 1984, yes since the original one. I am a huge Apple fan and am not trying to spread FUD. I just want everyone to temper their enthusiasm so they will be pleasantly surprised their new 17" Laptop DOES arrive.

This is very frustrating to me, since I have had my order in since Jan 10th and have no word on it shipping yet. I didn't order from the Apple Online Store or our local Apple Store, since I didn't want to pay retail plus tax (plus shipping online). well.. my bad boy was waiting for me outside my office door when i arrived this morning. only took two days after being sent from taiwan...

i'm not going to go into what others have already said about this work of art. its a sweet.. sweet machine. if i have one problem right now its akin to owning a new car. you feel like babying it so much as to not get any scratches on it. that is my main concern. "first" its a machine that needs to be used.. second.. its beautiful and should be taken care of.

i'm concerened with getting scratches on it.. others have said that shouldnt be a problem with the new case.. still.. if you're wearing a watch.. wouldnt that do harm eventualy? i'm thinking about making some type of wrist gard.. not sure yet..

anyway.. you will absolutely adore this machine.

If it's the same as the 12", you shouldn't have any problems: mine's a month down the line now and I wouldn't consider that I've been mollycoddling it particularly, including adventures in some reasonably harsh environments, and it's still scratch-free.

I'm very happy for those who have recieved their PowerBooks. However, I am peeved that I ordered mine on Jan 10th and have heard nothing yet. I called a friend at Mac Zones, who I have dealt with for years. They have hundreds on order, the first order placed on Jan 7th. They have received zero units. He said they were told not to expect anything until mid April.

The Houston Galleria Apple Store has them in stock for walk in customers. I can only hope this means that they are getting close to fulfilling all Apple backorders, but I doubt it. I would buy one there, but it would cost about $600 more than I am paying, since I'm not paying retail or tax.

That and I think I'm gonna boycott the Apple Store in protest of their self-serving attitudes toward their customers. And to think I stood in line when that store first opened. Man, am I gullible.

i've had my 17" on all day.. the top (both left and right) are a little warm but nothing to cry home about. the bottom however is fairly hot.. especialy on the battery. It would hurt on bare skin.

i charged it up to 100%.. unplugged from ac and played the dvd twister. the credits are now rolling and the battery is at 10min left. i did nothing in the energy saver pref panel.. left 'em as is. I did notice there are several options to choose from (i.e. dvd playback). i expect that if i choose that one it'll save some more juice.

One thing to note.. as soon as i unplugged from AC the battery (at 100%) showed 2:59 left.. Not sure if thats because i had not fully charged/drained/charged the battery yet or not.. but am curious is apples 4.5 hour bat time is anywhere close to that (in any type of powersave configuration)

another update for those of you interested.. back home now with my new toy.. i had purchased virtual pc 6 and office x. i'm a software developer who makes a living building windows apps.. so i was hoping that i would have a decent experience running microsoft's .net development platform on my "bad boy".

the good news is that i installed virtual pc 6 with windows xp professional and the system rocks. of course its not as fast as my pent 4 dell 2ghz laptop running .net but vpc is in no way a slouch..

my 17" powerbook has 1gig of ram.. i allocated half of that to vpc and i'm very happy to say everything works great and is extremely snappy.

fyi: i have all the xp window treatments on.. all stock. very fine experience for those of you interested.

Actually, I am a NAPP Member. After another frustrating week, Christine called. She didn't have a voice and had been out sick. I find it very frustrating, though, that there was no one covering for her in her absence...

I didn't lose much time, though. Apple shipped my PB on 3/20, and it's made it as far as Anchorage, Alaska as of 3/22. I suspect I'll have it in my hands in another day or two. Apple said 3-5 weeks, and then surprised me with just a few days. No complaints here.

Always nice to meet a fellow NAPP member and one of the photoshop creative few. So did apple notify you of shipping your AI or did you check the PC Mall NAPP website. Where dio I look to see when apple will ship. I ordered my AI pb on 2/27 so perhaps mine will be shipped soon as well.

Horay! I'm getting mine tomorrow!!!!!

Got my Brenthaven shoulder case drop shipped to me today, and while unpacking it I got the call. My powerbook is in!

It was accidentaly delivered to the developer I'm ordering thru instead of drop shipped to me directly. This meant I had to pay an additional $76.00 in overnight shipping and insurance, but I haved about $600 having not paid retail or taxes.

One happy camper! No sleep tonight,
