I downloaded (on dialup (!)) the demo version of Office v.X last night. I've never used Word before, and love it. It kicks Appleworks in the behind!

But WHY WHY WHY does it have to cost four hundred freaking dollars? They sell the whole Office suite for $500!

I have no need at all for the other 3 apps! I would pay $150 for Word in a heartbeat, and that would still be more than suite value, right?

I know M$ has always pulled stuff like this, but it's never directly affected/pissed me off before.

That's exactly why I downloaded it from somewhere. Definately not worth the money, but I love it.

Generally I fall on the side of anti-piracy, but in this case I say "Yo Ho Ho, and Aaaargh!"

I know...Microsoft charges insane amounts for all of their software.

A full version of Windows XP Home will set you back $199. The Pro version costs $299.

Apple almost looks cheap after you've come from buying Microsoft apps...OS X is $129, most of the iApps are free, etc.

Well, you can buy Word by itself. But it'll cost you 350 bucks.

I dunno, maybe I just need to give the Redmond ratfuc*s more time. I do seem to remember a somewhat affordable Word '98 version that was supposed to be "special" for iMacs and iBooks.

Still, though, how can they face any judge with a straight face with bundeling "innovations" like this?

What I don't understand is why they don't sell it for 199 or something around there?

I think it's safe to say they would sell a ton more copies and also have a lot happier customer base and then I wouldn't mind paying another 150 or 200 to upgrade to the next version.

the current way its 500 for the copy and 250 for an upgrade in the future

davechen-thanks for the heads up, but I still can't get past the math. $350x4= $1400. Office itself=$500.

I'm sure M$'s point is "look at that great deal!"


I'll just keep using Appleworks, which, I should point out is like, 6 applications for $70.

Oh, and (no pun intended) One more thing: buying the whole damn thing is the ONLY way to get Entourage X! Thank you very fuc*ing much!

I know this stuff isn't new news, but boy it's steaming me up today!

As for me, I just went down to the world famous Golden Computer Centre in Sham Shui Po and got the full install CD for about US$15.

I have no way of knowing whether it's legitimate or not.

I would buy Office for US$200.

Hey, that's not so bad, BD! I'll have to ask around. It seems like there were a couple teachers that could still stand the sight of me!

If I pull it off, maybe I'll put the other apps up on ebay, just for the principal of the thing.

i don't know if it's the same in the US but in the UK the entire apple range is available at discount rates to full-time students. I will be buying a new iMac + MS Office in my younger brother's name and will save about £300 each on the hardware and software. Most posters seem quite young so you should be able to take advantage of this. Even the iPod is discounted.

At our school we get the entire Office X suite for $70. At other, larger schools it might be even cheaper. Maybe you could just ask somebody at a local college campus to get it for you in the campus store .

I noticed that when I was shopping around, gelding, thanks. I've got it hooked up, it should ship in 1-3 days.

GK, I'd probably have to drive 100+ miles to find a campus store that would carry Word X, but thanks for the suggestion, too.

Gee, I should rant and rave about stuff more often, you guys are really helpful.

If anyone have downloaded the try out version: Does it have danish spell proffing (or spell checking or whatever it is called. Too tired to look it up )?

If it doesn´t: Can anyone who has the real deal send me a copy of the nessesary files (assuming its legal to do :confused: ) for danish spell checking/proofing. I cannot decide whether to shell out half a iMac for Office before I have tried its proofing capabilities (this word is propably also wrong. Oh well)
