Unsatisfactory!

not local . . . not soon enough, not fast enough . . . why do they need to pull them from four other states? why only 5 thousand.

If this really makes you feel that 'preparedness' is being exhibited then your days late and your head is up your ass!

and forget the damn Looters!!!

Who cares about the damn goods in the stores . . . they're useless anyway, and will be thrown out . . . people need food and clothes and water, and those who are grabbing Bling will probably end up paying for it in the short/long run . . . you know, I saw a looter carrying about 20 bottles of A-1 steak sauce . . . do you think that he is going to save it in his non-existent home for later and live big? and is A-1 corp, really going to miss it? --- who cares about that!?

JACKSON BARRACKS -- When members of the Louisiana National Guard left for Iraq in October, they took a lot equipment with them. Dozens of high water vehicles, humvees, refuelers and generators are now abroad, and in the event of a major natural disaster that, could be a problem.
"The National Guard needs that equipment back home to support the homeland security mission," said Lt. Colonel Pete Schneider with the LA National Guard

Lets just face it folks these Bastards in Govt cant plan ahead for nothing unless they have lobbiest pushing them with lots of money for their fricking campaigns. Bush's team planned as well for Hurricane season as they did for the 300 Billion dollar Iraq war. This guy is about Corporations just as all of Congress is.

Its time for a new Govt if you ask me who ANSWER TO THE PEOPLE ONLY! We need to kick out all lobbiest and money if we are to clean up our Filthy Govt. Then we could be doing great things instead of crap like war and a gigantic military complex whos corporations pull the govt strings. We need people in Govt putting USA first not Mexico or Iraq or China!

pfflam, what are these troops supposed to be doing? 650 people rescued an hour alone by F&G let alone what the helicopters from the coast gaurd, etc. are doing. 300 buses! The Red Cross has set up centers in Houston. The FEMA guy yesterday was talking about standing up ten mobile hospitals, etc. I think the focus is to get the people to dry land and then out of town -- and we're talking about tens of thousands of people.

This is like a nuke going off in a major American city.

from duh-bubba:
Quote:
FEMA has deployed more than 50 disaster medical assistance teams from all across the country to help the affected -- to help those in the affected areas. FEMA has deployed more than 25 urban search and rescue teams with more than a thousand personnel to help save as many lives as possible. The United States Coast Guard is conducting search and rescue missions. They're working alongside local officials, local assets. The Coast Guard has rescued nearly 2,000 people to date.

The Department of Defense is deploying major assets to the region. These include the USS Bataan to conduct search and rescue missions; eight swift water rescue teams; the Iwo Jima Amphibious Readiness Group to help with disaster response equipment; and the hospital ship USNS Comfort to help provide medical care.

The National Guard has nearly 11,000 Guardsmen on state active duty to assist governors and local officials with security and disaster response efforts. FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers are working around the clock with Louisiana officials to repair the breaches in the levees so we can stop the flooding in New Orleans.

Our second priority is to sustain lives by ensuring adequate food, water, shelter and medical supplies for survivors and dedicated citizens -- dislocated citizens. FEMA is moving supplies and equipment into the hardest hit areas. The Department of Transportation has provided more than 400 trucks to move 1,000 truckloads containing 5.4 million Meals Ready to Eat -- or MREs, 13.4 million liters of water, 10,400 tarps, 3.4 million pounds of ice, 144 generators, 20 containers of pre-positioned disaster supplies, 135,000 blankets and 11,000 cots. And we're just starting.

Amen.

But that still changes nothing about NOLA or the gulf coast. They are having a hell of a time getting anything in to do cleanup. Any equipment that was in the area is useless. Police forces have 15% of their equipment if any. We're not talking about a small area that was effected. We are talking about 3 states and many urban areas. There's no power. there's no water. There's no effective communication. Roads leading in are blocked by debris. Bridges leading in are destroyed.

The areas effected are now 3rd world countries until a large force of equipment and people are able to be supported.

Stop pointing fingers at anyone. No-one could have protected anyone from the awesome power of a Cat 4 or 5 hurricane. You could have spend as much money as you wanted to protect some area and things would have failed and people would have died. The only effective method of protection is to evacuate. That's it.

It's time to buck up and prepare for hard times and sacrifice. This the second once-in-a-lifetime event in a matter of years that will effect all of us, in this country, in one way or another. There is no room now for finger pointing and sniveling politics.
Its just amazing of all the years of doing nothing about those levies, or the feds cutting dollars to the region etc etc,,,, yeah i guess when your pissing away 300 Billion for a war you started you cant be doing things like daming a city that sits below sea level or keeping the national guard in this country. This is why people vote democrat folks because the fat republicans are interested in making $$$ they arent interested in people.

Don't you dare preach to anyone after your disgusting and ignorant comments earlier in this thread. Your comments about this disaster are so out of line it's impossible to describe.

Just thought I'd add that it won't be the last.

This global warming thing (you know, the thing that has you pitted against the entire scientific community) means that like the dustbowl in southern Spain and the die-off of fynbos in southern Africa and the die-off of of plankton in the Arctic and the melting of the Russian tundra, you can expect a hurricane season from hell every year.

When hurricanes twat the US again next year, you can comfort yourself with the fact that all this isn't happening.

And just so we all know, Jackson Barracks was one of the first areas underwater. So if there is equipment there or whatever, It's underwater.

http://maps.google.com/ has great maps. Check it out.

The recruiting office:

5030 LEROY JOHNSON DR NEW ORLEANS, LA 70126

Is also isolated and or underwater. Also the location:

6400 Saint Claude Ave is underwater. Compare to the already outdated map: http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html.../index_02.html

So unless the equipment can float, it's dead. Even if they got it out of the 85% of the city that is flooded, who's to say they can get it back?

The LA governor ordered a complete evacuation of NOLA, which I assume means National Guard also. So I'm a little curious how you peeps expect all that personnel and equipment to arrive back in just a matter of days, now that the extensive damage is done.

No. They evacuated everyone but the g'ment people giving aid. Second, I know you don't know hurricane military procedure, but they clear out as soon as there is any chance that a major storm can hit. Days in advance.

Naples . . . you are not only a bot of ideaological origin (though that name sounds too sophisticated for what it is describing) you are also not greasping the simplest procedural tactics: if there were enough NGaurd troops, they would have been deployed before, during and IMMEDIATELY after the storm.

It's day four pfflam, nobody's gushing praise here, there are people dying from heat prostration at this very minute.

But the nasty Guard/Bush is responsible tangent has got to go -- this goes much deeper than having an extra couple thousand troops --- supposedly FEMA had things 'all planned out' for years.

I'd expect the Red Cross and other's like them will actually be the ones who end up getting things DONE.

You guys are missing the point.

It's total mayhem there. No-one can get in. They can't travel freely and they have their hands completely full.

They are trying to get an estimated 100,000 people out of the chemical soup that was once NOLA.

I think many have gotten way to wound up to think about this in an adult manner.

I guess that's true, Monday morning the storm was still playing havoc.

I just went here (pdf) and here.

What a mess, the devil is in the details, especially when you read on what's delaying the Corps from plugging the levees. locks, traffic and debris in the channels.

First link is dead. But yeah, I just contacted a private company that is donating tons of heavy equipment that has not reached the area yet. I plan on traveling to the Alabama coast this weekend for recovery efforts. In talking to them it sounds real bad all over the effected areas.

This is on the scale of a nuke, for sure.

Someone NaplesX can be proud of:

House Speaker Dennis Hastert dropped a bombshell on flood-ravaged New Orleans on Thursday by suggesting that it isn't sensible to rebuild the city.

"It doesn't make sense to me," Hastert told the Daily Herald in suburban Chicago in editions published today. "And it's a question that certainly we should ask."

Hastert's comments came as Congress cut short its summer recess and raced back to Washington to take up an emergency aid package expected to be $10 billion or more. Details of the legislation are still emerging, but it is expected to target critical items such as buses to evacuate the city, reinforcing existing flood protection and providing food and shelter for a growing population of refugees.

Nola.com

Scumbag beyond all proportions. And he's the LEADER of the House.

He's right. The issues should be discussed - and seriously. The integrety of building left underwater makes them uninhabitable after less than a week!

That means 85% of NOLA is totaled! Done. Gone. That does not consider the damage caused by chemical leaks and gas leaks and a miriad of other hazards and distruction that exists.

It is a purely exonomic consideration at this point. You thought that the IRAQ war was a lot of money spent... just wait.
