it's out for windows, solaris etc. see <a href="http://java.sun.com" target="_blank">java.sun.com</a>. Any news on when it will be available on OS X and when it will become the default install

Not sure, I just heard about the Release Candidate today during my computer science class today (we work in Java). Isn't there a way to use a standard UNIX variant of the SDK? Be warned, I probably have no idea what I'm talking about.

unfortunately Apple plans on releasing a dev version at the WWDC
