It's supposed to be released Real Soon Now. Steve announced it in MWY a few minutes ago.

So, here's a new thread to discuss.

Who will be the first lucky sucker to wipe his hard drive this time?

Well, I am excited, but it had better be soon.

To be safe, I'd use Pacifist to extract iTunes.app from their stupid package. You can get Pacifist on VT.

Lol. Too late. It is "optimizing" now. Will post impressions soon.

Just got it installed. Force quit the installer after it was done to avoid restart. (Probably not smart, but seems to be ok) Immediately, I have noticed it uses quite a bit less CPU power. That is all I have seen so far. In the preferences, at least, I do not see any differences. Most important thing: All of my mp3's are still here.

My Software Updater is not detecting anything...guess I'll have to go the web route.

No problems with it for me. Seems to use a DROP less CPU power.

Odd. I just downloaded the file from Apple and when unstuffed its just a binary file rather than a true disk image. I'll try SU again.

CPU utilization on my B/W G3 400MHz, 512MB

iTunes 2.0.3: 10-15.5%
iTunes 2.0.4: 9-14.5% after a reboot

Not very impressive <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" /> (at least for me), it's still way too high ! Perhaps a G4 would help...

If it's to any comfort, the installer says "Update" as you're about to begin the installation.

Notice there's bad editorial in the installer. It says "Press Install to continue." (or something like that) and the actual button is labelled "Upgrade".

so will i have to put my library back together or will that stay intact?

i figure that it would stay intact, but i just want to make sure before i install it

Everything will stay exactly the same.

why isn't there software update for this?
2.0.4 seems much faster in OS X on my bondi iMac than 2.0.3 did...maybe it has something to do with the memory...seperate window buffer for the app? It seems to me that a custom interface like iTunes would take up more memory or virtual memory and take longer to retrieve therefore making the app a little slower...
