(sorry IE was messing up again, so i couldn't post this until now)

What's inside the "users" folder?

How much free space does "get info" say you have on your hard drive?

This isn't making much sense. The fact that when you logged in as "erica" it all looked new, would suggest that the old stuff was over-written. But if it had, there should be more free space on the hard drive.

Do a get info on the "erica" folder in "Users". How big?

O.K.

It's definitely still got all your old stuff inside, I think we're almost there.

Try running a repair permissions.

Open the applications folder. Inside is a "utilities" folder, and in there is an application "disk utility". Open disk utility and there should be a list of disks on the left. Select you hard drive, and find the button that reads "repair permissions". Press it. It'll take a while.

No, that's O.K.

log out and log back in as "erica". Even if things are still looking "new" try using IE (or safari) from that account, rather than logging back in as olivepig.

i had to log back in as "olivepig" again. i connected to the internet (which worked) but i tried to open safari adn the little triangle was underneath as if it was up and running - but just like with this account, i can't open any windows or use it at all.
ao, i tried to open IE and a dialogue box came up that said: "Internet Explorer cannot run on this system"
just to see what would happen, i tried to open mail, and the icon on the dock bounced up and down like it was going to work then a dialogue box opened reading: "Mail has unexpectedly quit"
so, here i am, back in "olivepig"

damn!

Looks like we'll just have to get your applications that you use regularly working like they used to in the old account.

Which apps do you use regularly?

Do you live near an Apple store?

i do not really live close to an apple store. there is one near my work though.

It's not bad, as in unfixable, it's just that this is going to need a lot of tinkering to get things working for you, which will take hours to co-ordinate over the internet. If my plan had worked properly, things would have just worked.

This is so frustrating! If the computer was in my house, I could fix it in about 20 minutes or so.

Apple's genius bar is free to use. You've got an emac, right? So you could take it to a genius bar assuming you've got a car.

actually - thanks to mr. h, my computer is almost back to perfect. it was taking soooo long to go back and forth via the forum, so through ichat he was able to help me get everything operating.

last night i reinstalled safari and was able to get that working again (YIPEE!!! no more crappy internet explorer)

i was a also able to find directions on the .mac help site to get my old email account to transfer to this account. which is awesome because i had to go through the .mac site everytime i wanted to see if i had any new email!

i found and transfered all of my old photos to iphoto on my new account -that is the best news! i have a little 5 year old and i was so worried that i would lose all of those photographs! i would have been devastated! (now i know to put them on CDR)

but as for specifics, mr. h might want to comment - i don't really know exactly what he did! whatever it was, it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the only thing i can't get working is my ipod. (it shows up on the desktop, but not in the source column in itunes) so i bet i can find info on that here too! have to do some searching!

thank you all so much for everything! this is THE MOST helpful website i have ever heard of! i can't believe you are willing to offer your time and knowledge to complete strangers! if you all lived here, believe me, i would be making you a home cooked meal - and i'd even teach you how to knit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]
