I would like to have my nikon D70 show up in finder when I connect it to my powerbook so I have direct access to photos rather than having to go through iphoto or preview. Is this possible?

Probably not. The image capture application may be your best bet. At least that's how I'm dealing with EOSs.
I really do hope the next big thing isn't just a piece of UI garnish

I'm surprised that something so simple as this would not be available...it makes working with images quite tedious when for example you've got a few hundred shots taken over a few days and all you want to download are say 30 or 40 shots. Only option now via mac would be to download the entire set or one by one. There's no middle ground.
