My MacBook is running too hot...

Is there a way to artificially kick start the fan as and when I please?

There should be as I think the fan is controlled by an extension. When you go into single user mode, this kext hasn't loaded so the fans go full blast. You'd just need a hack to trick the controller. Apple released a firmware update for the MB Pros that modifies the fan control:

I've alway wondered why there isn't a manual slider for the fan. I can understand why they wouldn't let you decrease the fan but they could implement a fail safe so that you can't put the fan lower than necessary but you can always increase it.
