Trouble force quitting

I installed ArcSoft's Photoimpression on my iMac at work (MacIntel) along with the other drivers included with my Epson scanner. The app crashes (rather freezes) and when I try to force quit, the app vanishes from the screen, but the icon remains open in the dock. If I quit force-quit and then retry, Photoimpression appears in the selection window. I can repeat this for a while but the only success is found by restarting the machine.

I have had similar experience with Mail when it has crashed.

Any thoughts?

Your = the possessive of you, as in, "Your name is Tom, right?" or "What is your name?"

You're = a contraction of YOU + ARE as in, "You are right" --> "You're right."

Mext time this happens, go to the /applications/utilities folder and open activity monitor; you will see a list of processes, look for the Arcsoft one and click the stop sign icon...this issues a unix style KILL command that will terminate the app regaurdless of weather or not "force quit" works. You should not need to reboot in OSX ever for an app hanging.

BTW: Photoimpressions is a peice of crap, what do you use it for, maybe someone here could recomend an app that is not only better but one that is Intel-Mac native.

Thanks. I'll take a look tomorrow (it's one of the machines at work).

Our company just bought a new Epson scanner and the app came bundled with it, so I gave it a try, without much success.

Panoramamaker was also crap, also by ArcSoft. Hmmm.

Sometimes if the OS hangs with an app like this, you can unplug the device and it frees up the system. I've done this with DVD drives before on a bad burn.

The only scanner software I've used other than the TWAIN drivers that come with Photoshop, is VueScan. It seemed to work fine and even ran an old SCSI scanner under 10.2.

I normally just use Photoshop these days.
