Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update - Page 2

22 mandatory steps to upgrade OS X:

00) Repair permissions.
01) Purchase plane ticket to India, train ticket to Tibet, plane ticket to Benin.
03) Repair permissions.
04) Go to India, take bus to the foot of K2. Do not go to Mt. Everest, the DOS/BIOS guru lives there, that line is VERY long.
05) Repair permissions.
06a) Hire about two dozen sherpas (as you've never done any form of real exercise), climb to top of K2 or,
06b) Rent RV, take Interstate 666 to top of K2.
07) Repair permissions.
08) Ask OX X guru for the true number of the beast, it will give you a list of randomly ordered steps (it is also of random length) to upgrade OS X. Thus the need to make this holy journey in the first place, as no two lists from the OS X guru will ever be identical.
09) Repair permissions.
10) Go to K2 train station, take train to Tibet, visit Dali Lama, His Holiness will give you the truer number of the beast (a 1024-bit random number in binary format, convert to base 10 integer, this number is equal to the number of times you will need to repeat the OS X guru's list of steps (see Step 08 above)).
11) Repair permissions.
12) Take plane to Benin, visit Nana Buluku, she will tell you to "Go to jail, go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect 103,622 Benin francs." Jail in Beninese means home. If you don't hear her say these words your Mac is DOOMED!
13) Repair permissions.
14) Once home, fly Pope in from Rome, have him perform exorcism on your Mac, ask him for truest number of the beast (another 1024-bit binary number, this is the power to which you take the number given to you from the Dali Lama (see Step 10), fly Pope back to Rome.
15) Repair permissions.
16) Update OS X per Step 08 per Step 14 times, remember to REPAIR PERMISSIONS after each iteration.
17) Repair permissions (yes, you MUST do it again even though you just did it after the last iteration in Step 16 above).
18) Don't ever backup your system, no need to do a backup, as this is a foolproof method, it has never failed.
19) Format HD, install OS X from your CD's/DVD's, install update, install applications, recreate all lost data from scratch.
20) Repair permissions.
21) Repair permissions (while standing on your head).

This update is messing up the color profiles on a lot of macbooks.
Check the apple support forums.

If anyone is having this issue, like I was... use this color profile, and it fixes everything:

My PowerMac is now freezing and requires a hard restart after it goes to sleep. This is bullshit.

Is it just me or does Safari seem a little more Blue after the 10.4.8 update?

Cheers
Found the answer on the MacFixit web site. Just have to clean the caches as per their instructions and then everything is back to normal colours again

Cheers

I've just noticed one issue, and it's very bazaar. My Command-N doesn't work in ANY application. I can't create a new anything. My "N" key works obviously, and Command-Shift-N works, but Command-N won't work in ANY app! It's really weird!!!

So... is that a repair permissions issue?

uhh, I think it's just you \

Edit: oh, just read your second post That's weird

This is ridiculous, after installing 10.4.8, my 1.83ghz MacBook Pro is idling at 81 degrees Celcius, at least 20 degrees more than it was before the upgrade. With no apps running, fans are blowing even when it's on a table...not good.
"So... is that a repair permissions issue?"

No. File permissions state who has access to certain files/applications and whether said user can read and write to them. Occasionally (very rarely) a program will incorrectly modify the permissions of a file, meaning that you can no longer access it. That's the only situation in which you need to repair permissions. Repairing permissions just returns them to their default settings.

It can be though, if something went very wrong with the permissions. Different parts of system is assigned a "user", and if any of those "users" can't access the files they need, then things can go wrong.

That's my model, but I have no such issue. I installed the Combo.

Next I'm going to hold down the shift key while restarting in order to isolate extension conflicts.

But I really did notice that the Apple light stays on longer now after I shut the lid.

.. and if it were useful, the Installer would do it when it installs. It doesn't.

In other news, 10.4.8 has zoom-scrolling enabled. Hold down Control and spin the scroll wheel on your mouse. Zoom. Set parameters in Mouse control panel.

Was this only something for Trackpad Macs? Because My macbook had this from 10.4.6

I believe the control-wheel zoom was activated by the Mighty Mouse drivers, but 10.4.8 activates it for all mice. But this is only based on my experiences to date.

My Mac Pro is noticably slower after the update.

When restarting, I hardly ever saw the blue loading bar and the contents of the desktop would appear instantly. Now after installing 10.4.8 is take a good few seconds of disk churning for the contents of the desktop to appear and Safari also churns away before displaying any web content.

Is this normal after an update?
OK, can I have my matte Apple display, now?

I predict problems with Flash playback on PPC systems.

Here is why.

According to Apple, 10.4.8 includes Flash Plugin 9.0.20.0

However, 9.0.20.0 is for Intel, while the current version for PPC is 9.0.16.0.

The long restart (inc. login) time is normal after an update. Reboot again and you should notice fast boot times are back.

Not sure about the Safari thing.

Anyone using the Addlogix USB adaptor? *Watch out!* Don't upgrade or you will regret it as your system.log begins filling with constant network failures.

Those folks having issues with the update... did you let it reboot twice like the release notes say?

Or did you force quit in the middle of the first boot, thinking it was hung?

I didn't see this mentioned here yet. I updated my Intel Core 2 Duo iMac and my iBook G4 - Mail.app on the iMac went to Version 2.1.1 (752.3), but on the iBook G4 it remained at 2.1 (752/752.2)? I learned of this here: Hawk Wings

Yup, I let it reboot twice. I'm about to take a shower, so I guess I'll find out if it will/will not wake up from sleep again. I'm sort of hoping it will be a one time problem (although I guess that is a bit doubtful).

for a previous poster: My command-N works fine.

Hmmm, I'm waking up from sleep just fine now. Wacky. I don't know if it was something with 10.4.8 specifically or just a coincidence.

DeaPeaJay, I think it's just you (quid pro quo eh? ) My Command+N works.

Kickaha, I let it boot twice. I was worried the first time, I thought I had hosed my MacBook with this update and was too scared to do anything but leave the machine alone, and it booted a second time.

Messiah, I notice the long boot times too. It takes a while for the blue bar to appear and the blue bar stays a while too. That never happened before the update.

Maybe henceforth I should wait a few days before updating stuff from Apple?

Cheers

1) What's up with DesktopScreenEffectsPref? Is that the CLI hack to run your screensaver as your desktop?
2) I see a wireless update. We just had a security update, so could this be something relating to the pre-N stuff in iMacs and the forthcoming MBPs?
3) All that z-stuff looks like something relating to ZFS, although Tiger looks like a strange place to put it.

Yes, that's just me being as paranoid as possible
