Using an iMac G5 1.8, 10.4.8. I have two external drives set up, both Lacie. After the finder crashed this morning, they no longer appear on the desktop! I can see them both listed in the system profiler, but I cannot access them. I have tried opening disk utility, but it does not see them either! I am confused, anyone any ideas please?

Sound like your finder preferences got hosed:
Try looking at the finder preferences:
Finder > Preferences > Show these items on the desktop:
[X] Hard Disks
Toggling this setting may fix the problem. If not you may have to delete the corrupt Finder preference to force the system to create a new one.
I'm pretty sure it's this one:
~User/Libary/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Try looking at the finder preferences:
